Hello again bocce faithful,

We're going to run a Tuesday night bocce league at Zorvino Vineyards in Sandown, New Hampshire (originally planned for Mondays). The owners have installed two nifty outdoor courts and are anxious to add bocce to their list of offerings. More details below under Bocce news...

Also, we'll be running a "ribbon-cutting ceremony" to kick off the new courts at the winery. The date is Monday, May 11, 2009. More details under Bocce news...

Finally, we are again running the bocce segment of the Mass. Senior Games on May 16, 2009. The event doubles as our non-profit group's annual fund-raiser. Let me know if you are interested in placing an ad in our program book (which we will also post in the ezine at no extra charge). I'll send you the details via "snail mail".

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

{Publisher's comments in brackets...}

Russ Quarterone (North Andover, Mass.) sent some great pictures including the one to the right from a recent trip to Italy.

"These are the pictures that we took of the Bocce players in Sciacca, Sicily. The courts were on the perimeter of Piazza G. Noceto. Enjoy!"

New bocce player Randy Winslow sends a compliment and a question...

"I love your book. I just finished reading it. I'm having a hard time with scoring though. I know only one team scores per round. Now suppose the green ball is the closest to the pallino, but the red balls are closer than the rest of the green balls. What would the score be? 3-0 in favor of red or 1-0 in favor of green? Thanks for the help."

{One team scores...the one with the closest ball(s) to the target. Score one point for each ball closer to the target than the closest ball of the opponents. In the above, score 1 point for green. Next frame the team that scored the point gets to roll the pallino and play the first ball.}

********************************************************************************************

Special Olympics coach Carol Drebin asks...

"Special Olympics Bocce Rules specify the pallino must be thrown no closer than 3-feet from the backboard. But they do NOT specify the pallino must stop no closer than 12" from the sideboard, as I have seen in commercial bocce instruction books. Is this a mistake on their part? Does everyone play 12" from the sideboard?"

{Some play 12" from the sideboard, others 6", still others one ball width from the side. The USBF is in the process of revamping the Open Rules. I hope to be reprinting the final revision in this ezine and in the next edition of my book. Right now they are on the USBF web site stating only the restrictions that the pallino must come to rest past the mid-court line and not hit the backboard.}

And Carol Drebin asks this...

"Sometimes we play on DG and sometimes on indoor/outdoor carpeted courts (popular lately at senior residential communities). My theory: on DG which is 'fast' we need a lighter ball. On carpet, which is slower, we need a heavier ball. Am I right?"

{I think the best way to go is to stick with the international standard size and weight ball and then work at adjusting to the different playing surfaces. Someday there might be a standard surface for bocce courts in the USA, but right now the game is one of adjusting.

I often think of Larry Bird in his heyday with the Boston Celtics. Every once in a while he'd missed most of his shots in the first half, then come back after intermission and sink everything he tossed up. Good athletes know how to adjust. Great athletes make great adjustments.}

Blast from the past...

It's fun to look at back issues to see where we were and where we might be headed.

Volume #4, Issue #22 - June 20, 2005

Richard Heisler of Eureka, CA sends this...

"I thought you might be interested in this page. It puts the variety of similar ball games into some perspective. We usually think that other bocce rules are odd, but it seems to me that they all have much in common. Especially when you compare them with the obscure and regional games.

I see that English lawn bowls has joined the CMSB which now puts bocce, petanque, volo and bowls under the same organization. Volo and petanque will be in the World Games in Germany.

Check out the postcards on the site, then you will see what they meant by 'French Postcards'.

http://www.petanque.org/around_the_world/

{A fascinating site - so much info that you might experience "data overload" - but some of the coaching tips and techniques seem applicable to bocce as well as petanque.}

Photos of the week
This week's photos were posted already by Tucson, Arizona's Rock Gunnoe who was kind enough to send the link so that we could view them (Rock saved me a lot of work in the process).

"We had a little Tournament in Tucson last weekend and a good time was had by all! Some pics if you would like to see them, costumes were not required but a few were in the spirit."

http://1702az.com/Events/TucsonBocce09/tucbocce09.html

It was sponsored by 1702, a great pizza and beer place in Tucson - Republic Distributing and DogfishHead Brewery - who also sponsors the Intergalactic Bocce Tournament in Scottsdale."
