Hello again bocce friends,

I mentioned last issue that I'd be attending and participating in the PRV nationals at Campo di Bocce of Livermore at the end of the month. I'm happy to report that quite a few JOB Weekly readers from that part of the country wrote to say "Let's hook up when you're in town." It will be great to put faces with names of people I've corresponded with over the years. If you will be in the neighborhood, please come by and say hello.

I've always wanted to see the Campo di Bocce venue in person (they tell me the pictures - see below - don't do it justice). I'm a USBF board member and we're hopefully going to be revising the Open Rules and I want to be there to "weigh in" in person. Also, the PRV tourney is singles this time around, so I figured I may as well give it a whirl.

I'll be flying to Oakland on Wednesday morning, June 24 and staying through Sunday, June 28. So, if any JOB Weekly readers out there want to meet and discuss all things bocce... well, what better place to meet then the Campo di Bocce?

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Campo di Bocce of Livermore...

Bocce news & readers' feedback
{Publisher's comments in brackets...}

Bocce Guy headed to the nationals...

I'm headed out to play in the nationals (PRV) at Campo di Bocce of Livermore (June 24 - 28). This year the event is singles so I figured I'd give it a go. I'm especially interested in attending the USBF meeting which, among other things, will seek to revise and update the Open Rules. I've been a USBF board member for a while, but haven't attended meetings since I'm usually flat broke and reluctant to fork over the cash for airfare, hotel, meals, car rental, etc.

But, I've decided to "suck it up" as the kids say and make my voice heard loudly at the meeting and more softly (probably a whisper) on the bocce court. I've never played PRV except for a few trial matches here and there with my nose stuck in the international rule book most of the time.

I hope the referees will be patient with me as I sometimes get confused - I'm not very bright to begin with, and I am advancing in both age and senility. It's a round robin with top players going to the finals on Sunday, so I've made arrangements to fly back home on Saturday.

Please, if you are going to be in the neighborhood, seek me out and say hello. If you have some excellent high resolution photos for the new edition of the book, bring them along too.

Hope to see you at the Campo di Bocce of Livermore, June 24 - 28, 2009.

Two of my good friends have decided to accompany me out west. Larry Casha (see his Andover, MA backyard court here: http://www.joyofbocce.com/CourtConstruction.ivnu and Ralph Bagarella (see his Salem, NH backyard court here: http://www.joyofbocce.com/CourtConstruction.ivnu ) have agreed to be my travel buddies and they'll play in the PRV event too. They've never played PRV, but I am teaching them as best I can with my limited experience. I'm glad to have travel partners and it's reassuring to know that at least two players in the tourney will be less experienced than I am.

Casha is an interventional radiologist, whatever that is, and when he rolls a good point we yell out "Skilled hands of a surgeon!" Bagarella, a partner in the fast growing Latitude Sports Clubs chain is one of the best players in our area. We call him "The Sniper" for his accurate raffa skills. Look for us - we'll be the guys sporting the Joy of Bocce shirts and caps.

Open Division and Women's Division. We hope to see you there. Until then, enjoy these three young men from Italy. They are fantastic. Maybe we should have them as part of our entertainment package!

Tennesee's Jack Akins sends news of a common concern...

"I was looking for any tournaments on the East Coast, but I could not find any..."

{The west coast gang tends to send their tourney info to me pretty regularly, so those get posted all the time. The east coast stuff doesn't show up in my in-box quite as often. If you know who is running events in the east, please ask them to send the info along.}

"We do have 2 other public courts now, and the Chattanooga Bocce Club ( http://www.chattabocce.org/ ).

Blast from the past...

It's fun to look at back issues to see where we were and where we might be headed.

Volume #4, Issue #28 - August 1, 2005

Daily Gazette (Schenectady, NY) reporter Matt Volke is writing a piece on handicap accessible bocce. Evidently, recently constructed courts in his area are being billed as the first handicap accessible courts in the state.

Matt interviewed me by phone and I referred him to some knowledgeable bocce people including some who are active in Special Olympics bocce.

As I think back on my experience as a volunteer bocce referee in the SO World Games in CT in 1995 and NC in 1999, I don't recall wheelchair issues. Most of the athletes were dealing with Down Syndrome and mental retardation rather than physical handicaps.

I think there are two issues with handicap access bocce - the wheelchair athlete getting in and out of the court and, once there, keeping the wheels from digging ruts in the surface.

Some courts are constructed with a removable section for getting a heavy roller in and out - this could double as a wheelchair entrance/exit. I have heard of courts that have a side section near the end that is hinged that serves the same purpose.

Once in the court, if the surface is hard enough, the wheels shouldn't be much of a problem. If the court surface looks like it is going to be dug up by the wheelchair, perhaps the wheelchair players could stay at each end, rather than moving from one end to the other after each frame (often a common practice for players without wheelchair issues anyway).

Do readers have any experience with wheelchair bocce players? Please REPLY.

Photos of the week
Last issue I mentioned former USBF president John Ross and that reminded me of photos he sent me of his home court.

This week's photos first appeared in the ezine/web site a couple years back. Those were the days when I left the photos up for a week, then replaced them with the current week's pictures. I've been reposting some of these and making them a permanent part of the Joy of Bocce web site. These are posted under Bocce Venues.

They show off John and Andrea Ross' California home court - Shady Oak Cellars Winery and Bocce Club.
