Greetings bocce friends,

I had a computer crash this week and am struggling to get this issue out on an old, finicky computer that I keep around just for these kinds of emergencies.

Computers are a mixed blessing. Some things you can do with them are amazingly beneficial. On the other hand, they can really mess things up when there are problems.

My group is again hosting the bocce segment of the Mass. Senior Games on May 16, 2009. If you are going to be in the neighborhood, please consider entering a team.

We need to start a serious effort to get bocce recognized as a national event in the Senior Olympics and I am asking you to send an email supporting this effort. The details are listed below under "Bocce news".

Thanks for helping us make this important step for the growth of the game in America.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Art Bjork from Special Olympics Florida sends a correction..

"Your latest Joy Of Bocce newsletter was great with one small exception. Special Olympics International World Games does not use the United States Bocce Federation rules. The Special Olympics International rules committee is presently using the rules from Special Olympics International. The committee is made up of people from the Special Olympics programs in Ireland, Austria, New Zealand and the United States. I am on this committee, as is your friend Richard Calvanese. The official rules are examined and modified after every World Games to better fit current needs. Please go to http://www.SpecialOlympics.org then go to 'sports' then to 'bocce' to get the rules. I enjoy reading your newsletter and look forward to each edition."

{Thanks for the info, Art. That's my old friend Richard Calvanese in the photo from 1999 when we were referees for the SO World Games in North Carolina. I hope to get back on the officiating crew for the games in 2010 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Click Richard's photo to see pics of the 1999 games.}

My 83-year-old mother-in-law has a spot on Boston.com where she shows how to make marinated eggplant. She and her husband are still working in the family Italian deli near the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.

It's a real "trip" when she puts the eggplant in a pillow case, then into the washing machine on spin cycle to eliminate the excess water. Check it out here:

Elizabeth Wong Fontana sends this...

"I hope that this bocce forum that I created at Yahoo Groups will help to get bocce news, information, tournament results posted by you-the subscribers/readers/bocce players.

Italy has a wonderful forum for their players at http://www.bocceitaliaforum.net . But it's all written in Italian, and not very easy to subscribe to if you are not able to read Italian. I was hoping to find a bocce forum website here in the USA that was easy for readers to find. Since that was not the case, here is the birth of BocceUSAforum at Yahoo Groups: http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/bocceusaforum/

All postings will be publicized within minutes of receipt. I will try to set it up so different topics are easy to find. I will be reporting twice daily from Bevagna Italy during the Women's International Bocce Raffa/Volo Championships during March 29 - April 5.

Please feel free to make a comment on this forum.
In bocca al lupo,
Elizabeth"

Blast from the past...

It's fun to look at back issues to see where we were and where we might be headed.

Volume #4, Issue #15 - April 18, 2005

Dr. Cordano on Safe Bocce...

"For a long time I've wanted to comment on the dangers of bocce courts (being hit by a ball or pallino while playing in the next court or when just observing). This can easily be prevented (95%) by building high rails (minimum 4 - 5 feet) over the top of the lateral walls or outside of the courts at both ENDS if spectators are to be in those positions...or within 25 - 35 feet.

Wherever you play, some players (unfortunately) try to KILL the bocce ball and throw with MAXIMUM POWER. Bocce is FINESSE over all, and if you "shoot - RAFFA - Spacca" - lobbing the ball more softly you will have far better control and avoid destroying the area of play...by not having a heavy break after hitting the declared or desired objective. VOLO shooting carries the same potential.

We observe many courts with absolutely NO PROTECTION between side-by-side courts. All bocce clubs should carry good insurance."

{As usual, the good doctor makes good sense. I've seen some courts in New England and New York with chain link fencing for protection. This works fine as long as the mesh is small enough so that even a pallino cannot pass through. Some big-time European boccedromes have acrylic barriers like Plexiglas.}

Joy of Bocce 3rd Edition - Photos Needed

I’ve decided to do a third edition, re-doing almost all the photographs. I’ve got a great new digital camera and can re-take many of the shots. In addition, I’m asking readers to submit new pics – at least 300 dpi is the goal. I'm asking you and my friends like court builders David Brewer, Mike Grasser, and Tom McNutt to re-submit photos of their best courts. The new edition will probably not be much different in terms of text (although I may tighten it a bit – friends of mine say to me…”Leave it to you to write a book this thick on bocce”).

I'll need your help with this effort. Please submit high quality (300 dpi) pics (and permission to reprint) of bocce in your neck of the woods. This project will be my main focus for 2009. Please help.

New Jersey Bocce Invitational 2008 - photos by yours truly...

Photos of the week
I'm continuing my effort to re-post some of the Photos of the Week from years past that were only on line for one week. This week's re-posting are pictures submitted by Michael Grasser back in 2003.

They highlight a doubles (2-player) league played in Las Vegas on eleven (that's right, 11) 90' by 12' courts in the public domain. The re-posted photos are now a permanent part of the Joy of Bocce web site under Bocce Tidbits.

{Please send photos of bocce in your neck of the woods.}

Bocce product of the week
Bob and Barb Gross have introduced a new product to the bocce community. "BarbnBob Enterprise" is located in Fayetteville, PA and their new web site can be visited by clicking here http://www.bocceboard.com

They've created a cleverly conceived and well constructed miniature bocce board for indoor play. The game uses large marbles for bocce balls and a smaller metal pallino. The board is expertly crafted and features a billiard table-like (felt) playing surface. The game includes...

1 - 50" x 13" Standard BocceBoard™
8 - 1 inch bocce balls - 4 red and 4 blue
1 - 9/16th inch chrome pallino
1 - Pocket measuring tape with level
1 - Velour Ball Bag
1 - Bag Hook

It looks like Bob and Barb have thought of everything. There's a bag to store the balls in, a leveling device that includes a tape measure, and even a hook in case you want to conveniently hang and display the game board on your rec room wall.

Note: on the bottom four corners of the board are adjustable knobs that you turn by hand to level the game board before playing.

This nifty product doesn't eliminate our need for indoor bocce venues in cold climes. but it is a pleasant diversion and the best constructed of these type miniature boards that I've yet seen.
