Hi gang,

I got my crashed computer up and running again and also purchased a new one that will serve as a back-up and is also well suited for editing video - something I'm interested in delving into this summer. I hope to put some short instructional bocce videos on YouTube.

My group is again hosting the bocce segment of the Mass. Senior Games on May 16, 2009. If you are going to be in the neighborhood, please consider entering a team.

We need to start a serious effort to get bocce recognized as a national event in the Senior Olympics and I am asking you to send an email to "the powers that be" supporting this effort. The details are listed below under "Bocce news".

Thanks for helping us make this important step for the growth of the game in America.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Congratulations to Benji Tosi who won bronze by placing 3rd at the Pan American Bocce Championship in Lima, Peru! On December 6th 2008, Tosi become the first male American to claim an international bocce medal. Keep up the great work Benji and best of luck at the world championships this year in France!

Elizabeth Wong Fontana says...

"If anyone is interested in playing bocce at the clubs in Italy, or competing in a tournament there, please feel free to send me an email, or check out my website: http://www.bocceitalia.com

More from Elizabeth on the Bocce USA forum...

http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/bocceusaforum/

"Thank you for referring your readers to the BocceUSAforum site. I hope that it will be a benefit to both the players and readers.

I have received many favorable responses to this site already. The next step after that is organizing a page at YouTube to handle videos of Raffa tournaments (I already have a site at YouTube called BocceRaffa), Open tournaments, and general backyard bocce videos.

Your webzine is a great testimony to your dedication and organizational skills that you have brought to the bocce community. I feel that if you would like to take over, or re-invent the forum for bocce as an addition to your website, I would be glad to turn it over to your most capable hands."

{A tempting offer. I appreciate the vote of confidence, and I am hoping to dabble in some bocce video this summer, but my plate is pretty full right now.}

Anyway, kudos to your ezine.

Just another bocce fan,
Elizabeth Wong Fontana"

Frank Valanzola sends some info and a reminder about his June 20, 2009 tourney...

With President's Day upon us, we thought it suitable to infom all of our sponsor's and supporter's of the recent developments pertaining to our efforts of The 3rd Annual New Jersey Bocce Invitational benefitting OperationShoebox New Jersey and Boys & Girls Clubs in New Jersey.

Please take a moment to view the "Fallen But Not Forgotten" video on the Dolce website. The song was written by Ray Boltz of Indiana and is a tribute to all heroes, i.e. police, soldiers and firefighters.

Viki Wallace, a singer/songwriter who has performed throughout the country has graciously offered to perform as well as her soldier tribute "When Will I See You". Our law enforcement are our soldiers on the home front and this year, due to the untimely passing of Belleville Police Officer Kenneth Santucci, we will offer CD's whereby all proceeds will benefit the Santucci Scholarship Fund established by the Belleville PBA Local #28.

Blast from the past...

It's fun to look at back issues to see where we were and where we might be headed.

Volume #4, Issue #16 - April 25, 2005

Roland Morfe writes to ask about "How to determine the proper angle for bankshots?"

{An interesting question. First, it should be noted that in true international play, bank shots are not permitted. The sides of the courts are pitched to help prevent a ball from hitting the side. If your shot does rebound off the sideboard, your ball is dead and removed from play.

In Open Rules though, we do play shots off the sideboards. But there is no hard and fast rule about where to strike the side to get the correct carom. Each court is different and "trial and error" leads to the "court knowledge" that you will need to be successful.

In my backyard court, the sides are planks supported by spikes and rebar driven into the ground. Balls hitting the side tend to hug the rail. At our Salem, NH venue the sides are up against a heavy backing of earth and stone dust. Balls caroming off these tend to rebound quite a bit. So, try out the various shots in your pre-game warm-ups. On some courts, the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection (one of the few things I remember from physics class, or maybe it was geometry class...I tended to doze off in both). At other venues you get surprising results.

If you can weigh in on this topic, please REPLY.}

Joy of Bocce 3rd Edition - Photos Needed

I’ve decided to do a third edition, re-doing almost all the photographs. I’ve got a great new digital camera and can re-take many of the shots. In addition, I’m asking readers to submit new pics – at least 300 dpi is the goal. I'm asking you and my friends like court builders David Brewer, Mike Grasser, and Tom McNutt to re-submit photos of their best courts. The new edition will probably not be much different in terms of text (although I may tighten it a bit – friends of mine say to me…”Leave it to you to write a book this thick on bocce”).

I'll need your help with this effort. Please submit high quality (300 dpi) pics (and permission to reprint) of bocce in your neck of the woods. This project will be my main focus for 2009. Please help.

Bocce in the park - photos by yours truly...

Photos of the week
I'm continuing my effort to re-post some of the Photos of the Week from years past that were only on line for one week. This week's re-posting are pictures submitted by Michael Grasser back in 2003.

Grasser took part in, and photographed a Cape Coral, Florida bocce tournament held at Veterans Park (4140 Coronado Blvd.).

Mike says that "It was a very well organized and fun tournament. I have never been to a tournament where the directors worked so hard to make the rules as fair to all teams."

According to Grasser, the key personnel making the event successful were “Skinny Battista (tournament director), George Furlan (tournament promoter, sponsor and never ending worker), and Rudy Diaz (club president, sponsor, promoter, etc.).”

Before the event kicked off, the directors got everybody together (18 teams, perhaps 80 players) to talk about the rules that would be in effect. For example, they discussed live ball vs. dead ball off the back walls and voted that any ball hitting the back without first striking another ball would be dead and removed from play.

Players got to weigh in on their preferences through the democratic process and then a majority vote decided the issue.

Grasser reports that “We played games up to 12 points, double elimination, four man teams (two per end) on 70' x 15' clay courts.” Click the photo above or the link below to see Mike Grasser's Cape Coral photos.

The re-posted photos are now a permanent part of the Joy of Bocce web site under Bocce Venues.

{I understand that since these photos were taken the courts have been covered. Got photos? I'd love to post them here.}

Bocce product of the week
Bob and Barb Gross have introduced a new product to the bocce community. "BarbnBob Enterprise" is located in Fayetteville, PA and their new web site can be visited by clicking here http://www.bocceboard.com

They've created a cleverly conceived and well constructed miniature bocce board for indoor play. The game uses large marbles for bocce balls and a smaller metal pallino. The board is expertly crafted and features a billiard table-like (felt) playing surface. The game includes...

1 - 50" x 13" Standard BocceBoard™
8 - 1 inch bocce balls - 4 red and 4 blue
1 - 9/16th inch chrome pallino
1 - Pocket measuring tape with level
1 - Velour Ball Bag
1 - Bag Hook

It looks like Bob and Barb have thought of everything. There's a bag to store the balls in, a leveling device that includes a tape measure, and even a hook in case you want to conveniently hang and display the game board on your rec room wall.

Note: on the bottom four corners of the board are adjustable knobs that you turn by hand to level the game board before playing.

This nifty product doesn't eliminate our need for indoor bocce venues in cold climes. but it is a pleasant diversion and the best constructed of these type miniature boards that I've yet seen.
