Hello again bocce pals,

I'm still putting in long hours sifting through photographs for the new edition of The Joy of Bocce. And I've been making telephone calls to those who have promised to send pictures. It's really starting to feel like the home stretch.

I'm hoping to submit the entire package to the publisher in a couple weeks. It will be a relief to have this project finally "put to bed."

There has been a lot more bocce activity the last couple weeks with emails and phone calls coming in asking about building courts, running charity tournaments, bocce parties and outings. Maybe people are getting more confidence in the economy turning the corner. Let's hope so.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Bocce news and readers' feedback...
{Publisher's comments in brackets}

In the recent finals of one of our local bocce leagues the gang got a little testy. I've written about this often in the past. Competition often brings out the worst in people. It can bring out the best too, but that's not quite as common an occurrence.

On this particular night the players were arguing about every little imagined or real advantage that the other team was getting. This had the effect of seriously upsetting the person who runs the league. Speaking from the point of view of one of those guys who runs programs, let me offer this - NEVER aggravate the one who does all the work putting together a program for you. He or she is creating the schedule, purchasing the court time, sending the emails, keeping the standings, scheduling the refreshments, buying the awards, etc., etc., etc. Most players offer little help. They want to pay their playing fee, show up at game time, and complain about how things should have been run.

When you anger the one who does all the work, he might just get fed up and decide to stop running the program. Then EVERYBODY loses.

Try this approach instead - thank the one who put all the time in to provide you with a quality program. That person most often hears the complaints and seldom hears the positive comments. He'll appreciate your compliment and likely be re-energized to run the next program. Then everybody wins.

Peter Di Turi, Webmaster for the Auburn Bocce Club gives an update on his high tech bocce happenings. He asked permission to post some of The Joy of Bocce videos, which of course, I happily allowed.

"Thank you so much for your approval! I'm going well beyond your Web site credit request! I am putting title frames between each video to transition to and from clips. They will be 15 seconds in duration, and will include information on the previous and the next videos played on Puget Sound Bocce.

For each title frame video's set of information, I will put in the video's title, the year of the video, the video's duration, the agency/agencies represented, Web site(s), and the known person/people hosting or shooting or responsible for the video. I have allocated 4 lines of info at font size 26, so between the time to read it and the text size there's plenty of opportunity to see what was missed and what's coming up.

I'm working on other agencies to allow me to show their copyrighted videos on the channel. The USBF has been very supportive of my initial efforts to bring bocce to a personal level with this technology, and is interested in having me stream the 07/11 Paesano Club event in Gresham, OR. Of course, that's the same day as the World Cup final, so I'll have to decide if I can commit to this effort!

Please let your subscribers know about this new and developing resource for bocce. I welcome any viewer comments via the various Puget Sound Bocce social medium or e-mail them to pdituri@comcast.net ! Any (clean) bocce videos that your subscribers make and want to share for broadcasting on the channel are most welcome! I'm hoping that Puget Sound Bocce on livestream.com will be a catalyst in the bocce revolution!

Thanks again for the thumbs-up on the videos, and to you for your dedication and support to the great game!"

{Sounds great! Anyone with bocce videos ought to hook up with Pete. He's a "mover and a shaker."}

********************************************************************************************

Another good idea from Pete...hope to implement it this summer...

"Is it possible for you have a link to your most current issue of the Joy of Bocce all the time? That would allow visitors to the links page on my site to head directly to the latest bocce news as opposed to going to the archives page, scrolling down, etc. Or, can your home page have a link to the most current issue? It’s those impatient folks that want their news in as little effort as possible, and it could avoid some of the e-mail issues like mine." {Deliverability issues}

{I'll get to this just as soon as the new book is put to bed, which will be in a couple weeks...I hope.}

Roger Tolfa of the Palmetto Pine Country Club and Rolling Thunder Bocce League of Cape Coral, Florida sends some photos and the following info...

{check out http://PalmettoPine.com }

"I run a league at our country club. We used part of the practice area of the golf course last year and it was a hugh success. We expanded the program and built six grass courts in a dedicated area of the property.

We now have about 70 participants and have helped a fellow golf course set up courts so we can eventually have competition outside of our league with the other club."

{Great photos - please follow Roger's lead and send pix from your bocce neighborhood. Our readers love to see venues from around the country.}

Bocce product of the week
Bocce Court Maintenance Tools

I’ve seen all kinds of home-made court maintenance brushes and scrapers. Two things have always struck me about them. 1 – they look like they are home-made and 2 – they tend to be HEAVY.

7' Drag Brush

Manufactured by Lee Tennis (makers of the Har-Tru surface material), this court maintenance tool created for tennis courts works exceptionally well for bocce courts. The 7-foot drag brush is light-weight and, even if you have a 13- or 14-foot wide court, you can smooth it over with just two passes. This is quick enough to do between games without keeping players waiting very long.

Bristles are 4 ˝ inches of synthetic fibers and the strong but light-weight frame is aluminum. Retails for $179.95 plus shipping.

Lute/scarifier

This strangely named 30” wide device is actually two implements in one. It is an all-aluminum combination tool for scarifying, leveling, and removing loose court material.

Strong and sturdy, the tool is light enough to handle with ease and is excellent for spreading new material during top-dressing. The concave shape of the 30” wide blade allows the tool to “float” along the surface without digging in. Use the serrated edge to scrape material from high spots, then flip the tool over to rake and smooth that spot and drag the loose material to fill in a lower point. Retails for $69.95 plus shipping.

Besides a heavy roller, the lute/scarifier and 7-foot drag brush should be all the maintenance tools a bocce court owner needs.
