Hello again bocce friends,

I finally submitted all the text and photos for The Joy of Bocce 3rd Edition to the publishing house. What a relief to have that chore out of the way! Now starts the editing (and waiting period). The good news is that today's print-on-demand technology can sometimes crank the book out in 60 days. That would put the book in my clammy little hands just after the Fourth of July. More details under "Bocce news and readers' feedback."

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

George Farruggio reports in...

"Our Punta Gorda Bocce League has just ended. In the photo I am giving a trophy to the Most Valuable Player who won the second year in a row. That is Joe Kaz. Shown in the photo's are Joe Kaz. (capt.), Frank Colucci, Dave Segal and Luigi Carlesimo.

We had a great time and the league ran about six months. We played every Monday & Friday. We play a three game set giving one point for every win the match is three games. We also play to 12 points per game and you must win by two points. The league will start again in October but we play all summer long picking names from the hat to form the teams. We also had two Most Improved Players who won trophies. They were Gene Kenyo and Walter Zanussi. Until the next time, you do a great job for the game of BOCCE not BOCCE BALL Thank you for everything."

3rd Edition Update

I am happy to report that everything (text and photos and cover art) is shipped off to the publishing house. I can't begin to tell you how relieved I am that the daunting task of revising the book is over.

The publishers are looking the photos over and, so far, everything looks "good to go." I am hoping for a quick turn around, maybe even as quick as 60 days which would get the book in print after the Fourth of July. Only print-on-demand technology can turn manuscripts around so quickly.

Thanks to all who sent photos. Some didn't make the cut for one reason or another - not high enough resolution or maybe we found a similar one that we liked better. My son James has a great eye for photos, and also a degree in communications, so his help was invaluable.

The new edition has a striking new, youthful cover, a back cover with a photo of me that, miraculously, doesn't make me look too bad. In addition, I've whittled the text down from 300 pages to about 200 and reduced the number of photos and diagrams from 300 to about 120. But the new photos are high res and complement the text wonderfully.

It's often difficult for writers to condense their own work. When you have a 2000 word piece that has to be shortened, you cringe. You might be able to cut it to 1850 words. But those words are your babies - you want to keep them safe. I can usually get it down to say 1500 words, but an editor worth his salt can probably reduce it to 1000 without losing any of the relevant content. I bit the bullet and cut even though it hurt me to do so.

I received some excellent photos from Jack and Jeff O'Heir of young adults playing which I think is important for readers to see. I also posted about 30 high impact photos of bocce courts from around the country.

I feel that this edition could accelerate the game's growth because it's more suited for the average person. It's shorter, less intimidating, while still being comprehensive. I think that people seeing it in the bookstore might be more likely to pick it up and leaf through it, then maybe truck it over to the cash register.

I wasn't able to get a foreword from anyone with high visibility, but, in the end, I don't think that will matter. I did, however, get some nice "advance praise" for the back cover.

I'll keep you posted over the coming weeks. I'm proud of what I've done. I think you're gonna like it!

Bocce product of the week
Bocce Court Maintenance Tools

I’ve seen all kinds of home-made court maintenance brushes and scrapers. Two things have always struck me about them. 1 – they look like they are home-made and 2 – they tend to be HEAVY.

7' Drag Brush

Manufactured by Lee Tennis (makers of the Har-Tru surface material), this court maintenance tool created for tennis courts works exceptionally well for bocce courts. The 7-foot drag brush is light-weight and, even if you have a 13- or 14-foot wide court, you can smooth it over with just two passes. This is quick enough to do between games without keeping players waiting very long.

Bristles are 4 ½ inches of synthetic fibers and the strong but light-weight frame is aluminum. Retails for $179.95 plus shipping.

Lute/scarifier

This strangely named 30” wide device is actually two implements in one. It is an all-aluminum combination tool for scarifying, leveling, and removing loose court material.

Strong and sturdy, the tool is light enough to handle with ease and is excellent for spreading new material during top-dressing. The concave shape of the 30” wide blade allows the tool to “float” along the surface without digging in. Use the serrated edge to scrape material from high spots, then flip the tool over to rake and smooth that spot and drag the loose material to fill in a lower point. Retails for $69.95 plus shipping.

Besides a heavy roller, the lute/scarifier and 7-foot drag brush should be all the maintenance tools a bocce court owner needs.
