Hello again bocce gang,

We're starting to book quite a few bocce events hereabouts - speaking engagements, ribbon-cutting ceremonies, fund-raising tourneys and the like. This might be a sign that the economy is on the rebound.

I'll keep you posted on events and, if you are in the neighborhood, please participate, or just drop by and say hello. One event that I am particularly looking forward to is a fund-raising tourney on Revere Beach at low tide. The event will raise funds for the local historical society's restoration of Rumney Marsh Burial Ground (August 21, 2010 - details to follow in an upcoming issue - if you want a tourney application, send me an email with your home address and I'll send it out to you "snail mail").

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Interesting news from Elizabeth Jade Wong Fontana who always seems to be on the cutting edge...

"OK, ready for this one? I am trying to organize a bocce tournament in Viareggio, Italy where I am staying to help dogs that are abandoned in Italy during vacation time. I have asked world bocce champions to play in Premio di Pinky in honor of my beloved deceased dog.

I have been getting good responses, and I hope this will become an annual success. The World Champions Germana Cantarini and Loana Capelli said that they would play. I am waiting for them to tell me what dates they would be available. The event will be triples 2 women, 1 man with the formation to be ABC or D. I am thinking that we can have 16-32 teams at the entry fee of 45-60 euros per team, not per person. All of the funds will be donated to the animal shelters of the winners' choice.

I have brought San Francisco beach bags and Sees chocolates as prizes.

If some of you are here in Italy when this event takes place, I will try to match you up with a team if you would like to be able to have the chance to play against excellent bocce players."

Sandro Martignetti sends news of his family's popular and successful charity tournament held each October...

"The Sixth Annual Martignetti Family Charity Bocce Tournament is scheduled for Sunday, October 10 at the Sportszone in Derry, NH. Recipients of this year's proceeds will be the Michael J. Dunleavy Foundation."

http://www.michaeldunleavy.com/foundation.htm

About the Foundation:

The Michael J. Dunleavy Foundation was incorporated in the fall of 2002 following the passing if its name sake Michael James Dunleavy, age 8 who succumbed to an inoperable brain tumor which was first diagnosed in the late spring of that year. The Foundation was born out of Michael's own desire to help other children who had cancerous brain tumors or other illnesses. Please visit our 'About me' page to learn more about Michael and watch a video of one conversation that set the wheels in motion. The Michael J. Dunleavy Foundation, Inc. has received tax exemption status under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Service. The Foundation is listed as a Public Charity and all contributions are tax deductible.

This one hot off the press from TK who definitely has a way with words...

"Gentle people -

We're gonna make it real easy this year.

First, let's recap: The 14th Annual Cedarburg Bocce Classic will be held on Saturday, August 14th at Cedar Creek Park in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. 11:00AM.

Okay, now here are two things:

1. To play in the 14th Annual Cedarburg Bocce Classic.
2. To get a sweet t-shirt.

Okay, do you want one or both of these things?

If so, use Paypal to send some funds* to this email address (tjkrings@gmail.com).

If you don't know how to use Paypal, ask anyone between the age of 8 and 15 to show you how.

* Fund Levels

1. Entrance to tournament + T-Shirt: $17.50
2. Entrance to tournament only: $6.00
3. T-Shirt only: $12.00
4. Full Access VIP pass (guarantees you a trophy): $1,500.00

Note: please indicate t-shirt size when ordering. Girl sizes may be available, so if you are a girl, let me know your girl size and your normal person size.

The funds will be used for the following goodness: t-shirt purchase and screen-printing costs, refreshments, trophy(ies), surprises, park rental, paying off Joe Dittman to not advance to the Finals again (for like the seventh straight year), spray paint, etc. etc. If any funds are left over, they will be given to the winner. Or I'll just keep them. Depends on how I'm feeling, I guess.

If you want to invite anyone else to the tourney, please have them email me first so I can rigorously quiz them and determine their merit and intentions.

So, cool. Let's do this thing. I'll write some more boring stuff below. You can stop reading now.

Cedarburg Bocce Authority
http://www.cedarburgbocce.com

Boring Stuff: so, it's probably unlikely that we'll have exactly 32 people sign up for the tourney, so this is how we'll handle it (similar to last year): If we have less than 32 people, the top two from each first-round bracket will automatically advance to the second-round, and then the next highest scores from all first-round brackets will advance until all 16 second-round spots are filled. If we have more than 32 people, the top score from each bracket will automatically advance to the second-round, and then the next highest scores from all first-round brackets will advance until all 16 second-round spots are filled. Tie breakers in this instance will be determined by % of total points that the 2nd place finisher scores in his/her first-round bracket. I will have a calculator. This is slightly different than last year, when % of total points weighed higher than actual point total. Specific court assignment for each subsequent round after the first-round is decided by the Board of Elders, or whomever happens to be around at the time and can be persuasive."

Joy of Bocce 3rd Edition Update

We're very close to getting a draft of the new edition. Once I (and a couple other readers) check for typos, etc., we'll set about getting it into print - soon, I hope.

Sent a measuring device to this bocce enthusiast who writes...

"Received my bocci measuring device today. Neat!
I am with Thurber Historical Association of Thurber, Texas. We are now a ghost town, but formerly had 6 to 10 thousand residents, many of them Italian - hence
bocci. We have 2 tournaments yearly, spring and fall at our Historic Park.

Do you know of any clubs located near or in Plano, Texas?"

{Can any reader help with this question? Please REPLY.}
