Hello again bocce pals,

Things have been pretty hectic hereabouts with lots of bocce, final changes to the new book, and my non-profit group's softball season in full swing. In addition, I have the disheartening task of dealing with my sister's health issue (Alzheimer's) as I am her only blood relative and Power of Attorney. I've always been busy, but this is ridiculous.

I'll try my best to get the ezine out as consistently as possible. You can help by submitting photos, questions, comments, etc.

On the bright side I've decided to offer a pre-release deal for the new book edition which I anticipate will be ready to ship by August 1. Details under "Bocce product of the week."

Also, I'm "playing around" on eBay for the "Non-bocce product of the week." I have come into a great many items - art work, collectibles, costume jewelry, and all sorts of curios. I'll give eBay a whirl and see what transpires. Check out the eBay product of the week. There will be so many different items that something is bound to interest you.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Robert L. Agnelly sends new of an event in New Orleans...

"Come join us in New Orleans the week-end of October 15-17 for an exciting Bocce Tournament. If you have never visited our Bocce Club in Metairie, Louisiana, please visit our web site at to get a good look at our indoor, air conditioned club and courts.

We are located approximately 5 miles from New Orleans International Airport (MSY) and a short ride to the French Quarter. Lodging is available at the Days Hotel across the street from the Bocce Club at the special rate of $65 a night. Our tournament will be limited to 20 teams, so every team will play several games over the week-end. Win or lose, we want everyone in attendance to have a memorable week-end.

Put your teams together and come have a wonderful time in the Big Easy. Call me if you have questions - 504-734-1929. Email = .

Mike Landers of Oviedo, Florida sent a query about crushed coquina shell surfaces and I referred him to Boccemon Tom McNutt.

Later Landers wrote...

"Notwithstanding the surface I can tell you the game itself is drawing folks in. I had never played on a real bocce court until I built mine. My daughter had her graduation party at our house and 15 new high school graduates locked onto bocce. Some preferred the role of commentator, others as the unofficial announcer of who was 'inside' and still others joining in the trash talking of the participants. All calm, but all fun.

I live on a golf course and during construction I probably had a person a day ask what it was. Now folks drive by and holler out Bocce! or Bocce Ball!"

Bocce News from David Canclini…
July, 2010

USBF National Championships - St. Louis, MO

"This event was one of the most organized National Championship that I have had the privilege to participate. With the aid of computer programming and many volunteers, the event ran smoothly. Due to the large number of teams entered, early morning starts and late night games were required, but none of the players complained and were very understanding.

The competition was fierce but there were many success stories for players and teams from the West. In the Open Money event, of the top four teams, three were from the West: First Place: I.A.C. # 1; Al Leonardi, Ron Jacobs, Norman Freschet, and Manny Romo. Second Place: East Portal Bocce Club; Vern Cooper, David Camardo, Jim Fellos, Larry Cereghino. Third Place: Club Corvo, Chicago, IL; Fourth Place: Vino Tinto. Gary Oehrle, John Contreras, Deanna Contreras, Mark Lafluer.

In the Open Medal Tournament three of the top four teams were from the West. First Place: Shady Oak Cellars; John Ross, Andrea Ross, Rolando Negrini, Steve Daidone, Diana Kelley; Second Place: Left Coast Bocce. Maria Narayan, Rena Harel, Diana Pellegrini, Vicky Cordano; Third Place: Quattro Amici. St. Louis, MO. Fourth Place: I.A.C. Romano Lotti, Rick Wagstaff, David Canclini, Lou Salamone.

Club Punto, Raffa, Volo results: First Place: Palazzo di Bocce, Detroit, MI.; Second Place: I.A.C. # 1. Al Leonardi, Ron Jacobs, Norman Freschet, Manny Romo; Third Place: Club Vitulazio, NY.; Fourth Place: Da Vinci Bocce. MI.;

In the Women’s Team Punto, Raffa, Volo three of the top four teams were from the West. First Place: Left Coast Bocce. Maria Narayan, Rena Harel, Diana Pellegrini, Vicky Cordano; Second Place: Bella Bocce. Teresa Passaglia, JoAnn Jacobs, Laura de la Rossa, Lydia Romo. Third Place: Forza Femmine. Teresa Wagstaff, Colleen Randazzo, Teresa Rea, Shirley Croce. Fourth Place: Lucky Laggers, St. Louis, MO.

Men’s Raffa Shooting: First Place: Jose Botto; Second Place: Jason Wisniewski; Third Place: Sal Lini. Women’s Raffa Shooting: First Place: Deanna Contreras; Second Place: Colleen Randazzo; Third Place: Nancy Martignago.

"This is what you have been waiting for 'The Best Tournament Ever.' Big bucks are to be awarded depending on the amount of teams. 24 teams should pay around $800 to first, if all goes good. This will be played on grass with no side boards. The more teams the more money that will be paid in prizes. Sign up early to make sure you don't miss the fun."

Peter Di Turi sends news...

"The Tacoma Elks Bocce Tournament scheduled for Sunday, July 18 has been cancelled. A new tournament sponsored by the Christopher Columbus Society is scheduled for Saturday, August 28 at Wright Park in Tacoma. I have updated the Auburn Bocce Club Web site with the latest information on known bocce events, including hyperlinks to contacts for these events."

Can anyone help with this question from Kevin Thies?

"I am looking for information on the requirements for constructing Bocce courts that will fulfill ADA requirements. Could you direct me to people who have done this? We are making 4 bocce courts (91' x 13') and we want them to be accessible for wheelchairs. I hope to have pictures and information for one of your newsletters in the near future. Thanks for your help."

{I asked for more info...and Kevin replied...}

"I am located in Madison, Wisconsin which is part of Dane County. I am President of Four Lakes Bocce Association. The making of the courts is a combined effort of the Village of McFarland, the McFarland Senior Outreach Center and FLBA. We are also getting support from the Italian Workmens Club of Madison."

Corporate outing in Boston's North End...

Photos of the week
This week's photos were submitted by Richard J. Curreri, Secretary/Treasurer of the Southwest Florida Bocce League.

He offered condolences about the problems I've had to deal with getting the third edition of The Joy of Bocce into print. He adds...

"I have attached, and you have my permission to use any or all of the pictures from the Southwest Florida Bocce League. I'd also like to make a comment about George Farruggio's comment on concrete courts in your June 21, 2010 issue of 'The Joy of Bocce Weekly'.

Our league consists of mostly Har-Tru HydroCourts or HydroGrid Courts. They drain fast after heavy rain storms and need minimum maintenance. We brush them before and during games, if need be. They are built level and the balls roll true.

We do have a few concrete courts in our league and we have found they have to be built with a pitch to allow water to run off. The substrate is a rubber composite and the balls do bounce when they first hit the surface. When the balls slow down you are at the mercy of the court and they will roll left or right. For these reasons the majority of the league members do not like concrete courts. The SWFBL recommends Har-Tru clay courts."

{Thanks to Richard for the great photos, which show off 14 great looking courts used by the SWFBL. If you want to join the SWFBL, contact him at .}

Pre-Release Sale of the 3rd Edition of The Joy of Bocce

I expect to have the new edition in hand by August 1st. It should be in bookstores shortly after that. To celebrate, I've decided to run a pre-release sale just for Joy of Bocce ezine subscribers.

I hope to ship on August 1st and will send the books out as soon as they are in my possession.

The new edition will retail for $18.45 which is actually a dollar less than the 2nd edition. Don't look for lots of new text in this new edition. What I've attempted to do is tighten it and replace all the low resolution photos with high res ones, making the book much more accessible to the masses. The new book is comprehensive like the previous editions, but better suited for the mass market, not just bocce fanatics.

The new cover is eye-catching, the photos are pretty spectacular, and I feel great about the potential this edition will have on the growth of the game. I'm really proud of it and I think you will really enjoy it.

Pre-release sale price = $15.00 plus shipping. Up to three (3) copies will ship for a total of $6.00.

For a large quantity of copies for resale, send me an email inquiry and I'll make you "such a deal." Email .
