Bocce faithful,

Just when things looked like they were coming together I ran up against another little glitch with the publisher. There had to be one more round of "tweaking". But, I think we have it "on the run" this time.

If you have ordered a copy of The Joy of Bocce 3rd edition, please be patient just a little longer. Patience is a virtue - I wish I were more virtuous.

We've moved into production phase. I hope to be shipping the new book within the next 10 days. If you have pre-ordered it, I will ship the same day that the books arrive on my doorstep. If you haven't ordered via the pre-release sale, you can do so for another week - then the book will sell at the full retail price of $18.45.

You can save a couple bucks off the list price and own one of the first copies off the press. See "Bocce product of the week" below.

Also, I'm still "playing around" on eBay for the "Non-bocce product of the week." I have come into a great many items (from a family member who is ill) - art work, collectibles, costume jewelry, and all sorts of curios. Check out the eBay product of the week. There will be so many different items that something is bound to interest you.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Dr. Joe Kalil sends this update and the photo right (click the photo for a great look at the NH Lakes Region setup)...

"On Sunday, August 7th the 4th Annual Rocky Ledge Shores Bocce Tournament was held on our lake front lawn. Two portable Bocce courts were setup. There were ten teams of four players for a record turnout of 40 people. The tournament was organized by Joe and Helen Kalil who are very familiar with the game since they play year round in various venues, both indoor and outdoor.

There was plenty of food and sunshine to satisfy everyone. The game, as usual, provided an opportunity for friends and neighbors to meet and get together. Tee shirts with our Logo were provided for all the people.

Bocce is a great sport for all ages – and a great social event!"

Last Call for Revere Beach Tourney at Low Tide

I think this one is gonna be awesome! We'll set up probably 10 Backyard Bocce Courts and run an event at low tide on Revere Beach. There is still time to get a four-player team in the event. Funds raised go to the Rumney Marsh Burial Grounds restoration fund.

Contact 781-286-8119 for details and application. I'd love to see you there!

Janelle asks...

"I'm hoping you might be able to help, since your web site is full of great tips for all things bocce. I saw a mention of metal bocce balls and a magnetic retrieval chain in a novel (the scene took place at a North Beach bocce court in San Francisco in Domenic Stansberry's novel, "The Big Boom": "He had gotten the chain on account of his back, so he wouldn't have to stoop to pick up the balls, and he had become pretty adept with it lately, walking past the ball and the dropping the magnet between his fingers, snapping the bocce back like a yo-yo on a string."). I thought it would be a great gift for my husband. His back injury makes picking up the balls difficult. I had never heard of this before, but think it would be a wonderful solution. I'm hoping you might be able to point me in the right direction to purchase them."

{I have an item that might be just what you need. I've copied this email to Mike Delucchi who has designed a great product. You can contact him directly at Mike_Delucchi@hotmail.com .

Cecilia “CeCe” Turner sends Special Olympics bocce news from Georgia...

"Bocce has taken off in the Gwinnett County, Georgia area. As the head coach for Gwinnett Masters Special Olympics bocce, I am in dire need of coaches, unified partners (non-disabled individuals to play bocce with Special Olympics athletes), and other volunteers. I’m also in dire need to have funds to purchase uniforms, equipment and portable bocce courts.

As of this date, I have 38 confirmed bocce Special Olympians that are coming out to now three different locations on three different days of the week for our fall season. And more people are calling me every day to join. I need your help both in person and monetarily to make this work. I can’t do this alone…

Pete DiTuri is still at it...

"Hello again, Puget Sound Bocce players and fans!

On Saturday, August 7, the Woodland Park Classic bocce tournament was held at the upper bowl of Seattle's Woodland Park Lawn Bowling and Bocce facility. 14 teams competed on what turned to be the most grueling bocce tournament in the area in some years.

People watching the event on the Livestream.com Puget Sound Bocce Web channel may have mistaken the broadcast for a swim meet. The day started with heavy clouds with a slight dew over the courts, followed by drizzle, then light rain and finally moderate rain to the end of the event. 14 teams played, and it came down to one team enduring torture by waiting, playing another enduring the ultimate Seattle water torture.

This unusual situation happened when the Club Paisano team roared through the winners bracket by first leeching on the Blood Sucking Weasels 12-1, then barely getting by the Beacon Bocce Boys 12-11 (hold onto that thought to the side, will you?), then rolling over We Be Rolling 12-8, and euthanizing the Ageless Bocce Wonders 12-0 - you'll hear from them in a bit, too!

The Westside Italian team had a stunning defeat when they upset by a new team, Boccelism (12-9), comprised of 2 players from the Pioneer Square tournament played earlier in the week. Tacoma Elks took advantage of a bye by defeating South End bocce Boys 12-9.

Once Club Paisano won their four games, it was sit and wait for the losers bracket to catch up. They and the Beacon Bocce Boys had to wait for three games to compete, and then the Boys had to play what in essence was an elimination ladder tournament. In the pouring rain. No breaks.

Before they lost to Club Paisano, they defeated the Auburn-Bellevue Vision team 12-8 and after the loss they eliminated the Maple Leafers 12-6. They had a fair rest, and then went out to face Boccelism and won 12-4. Two minutes later, they played the Tacoma Elks and won 12-6. The rain is coming down harder. A few minutes later, they played Westside and won 12-8. Now, it's the Ageless Bocce Warriors for their 4th game in a row, and the Warriors were vanquished 12-2 and awarded third place.

So now the Boys play Club Paisano, with three hours since their last game, they had to come outside in the rain just to get warmed up! The Gresham guys didn't get too warm, losing to the Boys 12-4 - but with their first loss, it meant there would be one more rematch game to decide the Classic this day, with the giant water faucet stuck open all the way.

The Boys struggled early, as the strain of playing three hours in the torrent started to take its toll. Club Paisano was able to warm up and score well. Some bocce balls began to hydroplane at the courts could not longer hold the water from the intense rainfall of the day. Though the Boys tried hard, it was Club Paisano who came forward and took the match and the tournament title 12-5, putting the exhausted Boys in second place and players and fans in need of warm, dry towels.

Everyone is hoping for better weather for other Puget Sound Bocce open events soon! Next Saturday the Fircrest Fun Days tournament at Whiittier Park. The next day, the Italian Community Picnic will be held at Royal Arch Park in Maple Valley. The Christopher Columbus Society tournament will be held 08/28 at Tacoma's Wright Park. In the Portland area, it's the annual Festa Italiana tournament at Cedarville Park in Gresham, OR on Sunday, 08/22.

Hope to see you on the courts soon - hopefully on a much drier night! Buon gioco and good bocce to you!"

Photos of the week
This week's photos show off a corporate outing we ran in Boston's North End - what a great place to hold such an event! This one was for the staff of Boston University's School of Management. That's the leader of the BU School of Management pack in the photo, Scott Timmins, who was clever enough to hire the Joy of Bocce staff for his event.

Bocce product of the week
Pre-Release Sale of the 3rd Edition of The Joy of Bocce

LAST CALL - PRICE GOES TO FULL RETAIL NEXT WEEK - THIS TIME I REALLY MEAN IT!

I expect to have the new edition in hand the week of August 16th. It should be in bookstores shortly after that. To celebrate, I've decided to run a pre-release sale just for Joy of Bocce ezine subscribers.

So, the new revised ship date is ON OR BEFORE August 16th and I will send the books out as soon as they are in my possession. My sincere apologies for the delay. But, I want to get this book just right this time around.

The new edition will retail for $18.45 which is actually a dollar less than the 2nd edition. Don't look for lots of new text in this new edition. What I've attempted to do is tighten it and replace all the low resolution photos with high res ones, making the book much more accessible to the masses. The new book is comprehensive like the previous editions, but better suited for the mass market, not just bocce fanatics.

The new cover is eye-catching, the photos are pretty spectacular, and I feel great about the potential this edition will have on the growth of the game. I'm really proud of it and I think you will really enjoy it.

Pre-release sale price = $15.00 plus shipping. Up to 3 copies will ship for a total of $6.00.

For a large quantity of copies for resale, send me an email inquiry and I'll make you "such a deal." Email Mario@JoyofBocce.com .
