Bocce faithful,

Finally the dust is beginning to settle on what has been a most harrowing summer. I wrote in this column about my sister entering a nursing home and that I am her only living relative. She seems to be settled in now and I have most of her affairs in order. Now I just need to sell her house and most of the unpleasant business will be behind me. My wife has been a trooper in all of this, making phone calls, following up with various government agencies, real estate brokers, etc. She's done yeoman's work and I know none of this could have been done without her drive and stick-to-it attitude.

Also, copies of The Joy of Bocce 3rd edition have finally arrived on my doorstep. If you ordered one (or more) the last couple weeks I have already put your order in the mail. I spent the better part of two days shipping more than 100 copies.

I'm still "playing around" on eBay for the "Non-bocce product of the week." I have come into a great many items - art work, collectibles, costume jewelry, and all sorts of curios. Check out the eBay product of the week. There will be so many different items that something is bound to interest you.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

RulerRef

Bronx, NY bocce lover Tony Saccomanno and his granddaughter Jaime sent me their RulerRef to evaluate. It's a measuring device similar to The Resolver that Cresskill, New Jersey's Mike Paccione brought to the market a few years back. Paccione's device had a swivelling tape measure set on a clear acrylic cube that fit over the target ball. Saccomanno's is metallic and a lot more durable. I haven't had time to check it out yet, but will do so when I get back from Wickliffe next week.

I remember that Paccione had trouble keeping production costs down and that the device was embraced by average, backyard players but no so warmly received by high level players. Maybe times have changed. Anyway, the spirit of entrepreneurship is alive in the bocce community!

For now, click on the photo to find out more at Saccomanno's web site - RulerRef.com. Contact him at sales@RulerRef.com.

Bocce Guy Headed to Wickliffe tourney this weekend...

I am headed to the Wickliffe tourney on August 28th and hope that, if you are in the neighborhood, you'll come by and say hello.

The good people there are hosting me and my wife, allowing me to speak about bocce to the crowd, and will even let me hawk my wares (mostly my new book, which finally showed up on my doorstep...and if I do say so modestly, is looking fabulous!).

Details for the event =

August 27 - 29, 2010 - Ohio - Wickliffe. WICKLIFFE ITALIAN-AMERICAN CLUB. 27th Annual CLEVELAND CHALLENGE CUP OF BOCCE sponsored by Pat O'Brien Chevrolet. $5,500 first prize, $16,000 in total prize money – GUARANTEED. $175 per team entry. Four person teams (plus one sub) Contact Gino Latessa (glatessa@marcs.com) @ 216-789-6393. Applications and info online @ http://www.wickliffeianda.com.

This looks like it will be a great event and I hope to bump into many old friends from the bocce circuit. Hope to see YOU there.

Organizer Paul DiCicco sent me this email a while back...

"Mario, last November at the North American Pallino D'Oro in Michigan at Palazzo Di Bocce, a couple of our members, Oliver Markon, Chris Brassell, and myself had the pleasure of meeting you and even playing several games of bocce at that world class facility. On your way through town going home that weekend, you stopped briefly at our club just outside Cleveland. I don’t know if you remember, but our then-president, Gino Latessa, met you there and offered you and the Mrs., three nights stay at a local hotel and a place on one of our club teams for the 2010 tournament. The offer still stands and we would be honored if you would join us this year. You have done so much to put the sport of bocce on the map, we would like to extend this invitation as a small token of our gratitude."

{I'm IN! What a generous invitation! My wife, Carmela (the GOOD bocce player in our family) and I are clearing our schedules and looking forward to the event. We'll be there with camera in tow AND the new edition of the bocce book. I'll be doing my first official book signing for the Joy of Bocce 3rd Edition.}

"I hope we get a good turnout for our tournament. Our club, together with our city, spent over $300,000 for six courts, two covered. For the games on the 25th of September we are having a team division 'A' from our sister city of Lucca, Italy. It should be quite an affair.

Cecilia “CeCe” Turner sends Special Olympics bocce news from Georgia...

"Bocce has taken off in the Gwinnett County, Georgia area. As the head coach for Gwinnett Masters Special Olympics bocce, I am in dire need of coaches, unified partners (non-disabled individuals to play bocce with Special Olympics athletes), and other volunteers. I’m also in dire need to have funds to purchase uniforms, equipment and portable bocce courts.

As of this date, I have 38 confirmed bocce Special Olympians that are coming out to now three different locations on three different days of the week for our fall season. And more people are calling me every day to join. I need your help both in person and monetarily to make this work. I can’t do this alone…

Elizabeth Jade Fontana writes...

"Interesting article from the ESPN correspondent, but she has some catching up to do. Rome has already constructed the world's largest bocciodromo in preparation for bocce to become an Olympic sport hopefully in 2020. This place outside of Rome in the EUR - Torrino area. It has 24 courts, 15 rooms and 30 beds. View photos at http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?_adv_prop=image&fr=slv8-tyc8&va=centro+tecnico+federale+torrino&sz=all

"On 2 October 2009, the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) confirmed that Italy intends to put forward a bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Shortly after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded Rio de Janeiro the Games for 2016, the President of CONI, Giovanni Petrucci, said: 'The time has come for an Italian bid for the 2020 Games. Rio de Janeiro's victory surely gives Italy the possibility (for 2020).' The country recently hosted the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. Immediately after Petrucci's announcement, Rome and Venice announced and hospitality facilities as crucial factors for the choice.

After losing out to Athens in 2004—despite that it was considered to be the favourite—Rome will attempt to present another bid for the 2020 Games. The Italian capital staged a Games in 1960. Giovanni Alemanno, mayor of Rome, has thrown his full backing behind a Rome 2020 bid, saying: 'The choice of Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Games offers a big opportunity to Italy and Rome for the next edition in 2020. More than half a century after the fantastic Games of 1960, we can dream of bringing the Olympic rings back to the Italian capital.' their candidacies for an Italian bid. Bari, Palermo and the Romagna region also put in bids, but they did not meet the minimum requirements: 'Rome and Venice are the only serious bidders, all the rest is just so much talk', Petrucci said. On 19 May 2010, CONI backed Rome over Venice as Candidate City for the 2020 Summer Olympics, citing greater experience."

Italy's 2005 Pallino d'Oro & Navigare Tourneys...

Photos of the week
This week's photos show off the highly successful Bocce on the Beach fund-raising tourney at Revere Beach. The event raised funds for restoration of the Rumney Marsh Burial Ground. Held during low tide and played on the "hard pack", the event was as well received as any we've ever been involved with.

Twenty-four four-player teams registered for the event and it went off without a hitch. Organizer Lona Frongillo did yeoman's work getting all the pieces to come together and the Joy of Bocce posse of referees were on hand to manage the games.

Contact Mario@JoyofBocce to schedule your event. Bocce is the ideal fund-raiser (you don't have to know how to play golf) and is a great team building/rapport building activity for corporate outings.

Bocce product of the week
The Joy of Bocce - 3rd edition - Finally off the presses!

Designed to grab the attention of the masses

High resolution, colorful, eye-catching cover

200 pages of info, skills, techniques and strategies

100 high res photos and diagrams throughout

Photos contributed from around the USA

Retails for $18.45.

Don't look for lots of new text in this new edition. What I've done is tighten it and replace all the low res photos with high res ones, making the book much more accessible to the masses. The new book is comprehensive like the previous editions, but better suited for the mass market, not just bocce fanatics.

The new cover is eye-catching, the photos are pretty spectacular, and I feel great about the potential this edition will have on the growth of the game. I'm really proud of it and I think you will really enjoy it.
