The weekly Ezine for bocce aficionados everywhere
Volume 9, Issue #5 - February 8, 2010
Publisher: Mario Pagnoni Copyright 2010

Greetings again bocce friends,

It's time for me to get serious about finishing the new edition of The Joy of Bocce. I've been slacking but have resolved to put this project "to bed" by the end of March.

The text has been reworked, mostly tightened and simplified to make it more appealing to the general public. But, it has been a painstaking task pouring over hundreds and hundreds of photos trying to select the best ones. I'm hoping the ezine readers can help shape the book by sending photos and comments. {See Joy of Bocce 3rd Edition below under Bocce news...}. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Update on Logan Debrocke's Bocce Bash - He'll head to Germany during February school vacation and we will communicate with him and his parents via Skype (like being on Oprah). We'll keep you posted.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Bocce news and readers' feedback...
{Publisher's comments in brackets}

Dr. Cordano sends the photo to the right (click on it for a better view). It is from the last Senior Games in Lee County played at Cape Coral Bocce Club.

Dr. C. says "You can observe the four beautiful covered courts in the picture where Vicky {Dr. C's wife} was recognized as the best player/hitter and the local lady as the best pointer (her team came up second and I don’t have her name). Vicky’s team won the tournament.

In the middle is the head organizer Mr. Rudy Diaz who was helped by 'Skinny' Battista Quattropelle who along with George Furlan and others are the main 'movers' of bocce in the area."

Joy of Bocce 3rd edition update

Ok, Bocce Guy, time to get serious about getting this new edition wrapped up and off to the publisher. I‘ve been slacking. You know it. I know it. My revised goal is to put this project “to bed” by the end of March (that would be March 2010, not March 2011). Then maybe we’ll have the book in hand by the summer bocce season.

In my defense, the text is pretty well finished. The problem is sifting through myriads of photos in an attempt to select just the right ones to complement the text.

I’m still seeking a publisher while evaluating two print-on-demand outfits just in case I don’t land one. In case you are interested in that process, I’ll give you the Reader’s Digest version. You pick up a copy of Writer’s Market and look for publishers that might be interested in your book. You write them a brief query letter telling them about the book you propose to write, why you are the one to write it, and a little about the market for the book (like who might purchase it and how the publisher can make money with the title). You wrap up by asking if they would like to review a full proposal for the book.

Next you wait. Some of your letters get ignored. Some illicit a form-letter “thanks, but no thanks” response. Every once in a while a publisher will agree to look at your proposal risk free - no promise of publishing. Now you send a proposal with return postage as it most likely will be returned with a “good luck in finding a suitable home for this worthwhile project.” The proposal has things like a table of contents, brief summaries of each chapter, at least one full chapter, and other info like what the market and the competition might be. As you can imagine, this is a painstaking process unless you are a very talented writer (not me) or a professional athlete (not me again) or high powered celebrity (still not me). Even so, I have landed publishers in the past and have had some success with the books I have written (mostly artistic, rather than financial success).

As I go through this process I could use a little help with some photographs. They must he high resolution and must be accompanied by your permission to reprint.

The following are what I am looking for and hoping that Joy of Bocce Weekly readers can contribute and help shape the new edition. I am trying to stage some of these photos myself, but the lack of suitable indoor venues in my area hampers my efforts.

A good shot or two of people playing bocce on the beach, either at low tide or high or both;

People playing Petanque;

People playing Lawn bowls;

People measuring for point with different devices and with different styles (e.g. they run a tape from the pallino to the top center of the ball and estimate the center of the ball – or inside measurement, etc.);

People playing on the lawn;

People playing on hilly terrain;

Young people playing, especially high school, middle school, and elementary school age if possible.

Again, I'm hoping that readers can help shape the new edition, which I have promised myself to wrap up in the next couple months so it can be released in the summer.

Please REPLY if you can. Many thanks in advance.

Kay Kern requests a ruling...

"We had a play where each team ended with a ball resting on the palini. A bystander said that was a double palini and each player was given 2 points in addition to the white ball having a second ball closer than the red ended with a total of 3 points. I have not been able to find any rules about 'double bocce'."

{People in different areas play by all kinds of different rules. Strictly speaking, in bocce both teams would NEVER score on the same frame or round - only one team scores in a frame. Also, you get ONE point for each ball closer to the pallino than the closest ball of the other team. If both team's balls were touching the target, no point would score and the next frame is begun with the team who rolled the pallino last frame rolling it again. No team can score 2 points for one ball touching the target ball.

This two-point rule probably comes from horseshoe players who get extra points for a "leaner". Still, you can play by any rules you like and many players tend to go by the rules of the host. If they visit your venue and you play two points for a ball touching the target, they'll accept your ruling.}

Kay later added that "I never played bocce before, and when my 85 year old mother-in-law beat me, I wondered if I should continue!"

{All the more reason to continue. Anyone can play and enjoy this great game. Keep at it.}

Rockman president Mike Esposito is none other than the BC running back with all the rushing records and a stint in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons.

With Esposito on board we’ll TACKLE any job. Call for a no-risk quote. Mike can BLOCK any objection. If you need to see schematics, we can set up a DRAW PLAY. We’ll help you pick the best location on your property for the bocce LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. We’re very concerned with maintaining the integrity of your lawn and yard area. We’ll minimize the use of heavy machinery, replacing it with man-power to minimize any ENCROACHMENT on your property.

No one wants a construction crew on site for weeks on end, so there will be no DELAY OF GAME. We’ll BLITZ through the construction, getting in and out of the job site in record time. Mike has experience in CONTROLLING THE GAME CLOCK, and can even add DOUBLE COVEAGE or HURRY-UP OFFENSE if necessary to finish the job on schedule. Says Mike, “I want my crew to get DOWN AND IN quickly and DOWN AND OUT just as fast.

As an added bonus, the Bocce Guy will make frequent visits to the work site, taking photos for The Joy of Bocce and helping to make sure that the crew continues to make FORWARD PROGRESS. Make no mistake though, Mike is the FRANCHISE player. He’s the SIGNAL CALLER, running the show right from the opening KICKOFF, making sure you are happy with the finished product.

Call the Bocce Guy at 978-686-8679 or email and we’ll set a no risk appointment to look at your potential job site.

Kurt Everett will be soon be opening his...

Bocce Basement

"Kansas City 's Indoor Lawn Bowling"
14130 W. 135th St
Olathe , Kansas 66061

Opening in the Spring of 2010, the Bocce Basement will feature Six 60' X 10' indoors courts. The venue will have a fully stocked bar and plans to specialize in League play and hosting corporate team-builders, birthday parties, and other group functions. Website: Also connect at

{Sounds great, but Kurt might want to think about changing "indoor lawn bowling" to something that doesn't confuse people who know that lawn bowling is a cousin to bocce, but not the same game. How about just Kansas City's Indoor Bocce Center?}

Photos of the week
Bruce Lanke sent us an update of his group's annual winter tournament. I've added the photos under Bocce Tidbits, on the same page as last year's tourney in Perrysville, PA.

Says Bruce, "I wanted to share some pictures of our Annual Winter Bocce Tournament we had on January 31st. We had twenty brave souls endure 27 degree temps on a glorious sunny day to play in the snow the game we love!

This is our 6th year, it is more a social event than actual tournament...any excuse to play Bocce! We built a fire and dined on homemade chili made by our chef Tim Kelly.

Our courts are located at our church in Perrysville, PA. This past year we added lights and a pavilion.

Thanks and keep rolling!"

{Please follow Bruce's lead and send photos of bocce action in your neck of the woods.}
