Campo di Bocce of Livermore is the proud host of the 2011 Showdown Series Bocce Tournaments. The event is the brain child of Campo di Bocce COO, Benjamin Musolf. Ben's passion for the game has brought this especially challenging Bocce event to the Livermore Valley on a Bi-Weekly basis. The version of the Game is called Punto, Raffa, Volo and is the International version of the sport of Bocce.

The Showdown series features some of the best players in not only the Bay Area, but all of California as well. The age range of participants is 16 to 75 years. The skill level of participants ranges from players having played less than two years to the highest International level in Italy. The beauty of this tournament is that everyone is eligible and allows for a playing field of equal balance between male and female.

The ultimate goal is to have a sponsor of the event if not on a weekly basis but the entire Showdown Series. Campo di Bocce of Livermore was the sponsor of the February 20, 2011 event. This week's tournament was the first to be televised in the Country, and Campo di Bocce is blazing a path into the history books with promoting the game and Sport of Bocce.

The winner of the February 20, 2011 event was none other than Campo di Bocce's own, Ben Musolf. Ben played an excellent final match against Oscar D'Amore from Italy. This victory gave Oscar his only singles loss of the entire series that has been going since October. The series will continue through June 5, 2011.

The tournament is open to the public and the public is encouraged to attend. Campo di Bocce's goal is to provide a public awareness of the Sport of Bocce, so that it will one day be an everyday sport in the lives of all Americans.

SENIOR GAMES MASSACHUSETTS

My group just got the OK to host the Massachusetts Senior Games Bocce once again (I'm on the Senior Games Board of Directors). We'll host it this year at the Sons of Italy Lodge #902 at 155 Marston St. in Lawrence, Massachusetts. See the listing below under Tourneys on April 30, 2011.

Come and join us if you will be in the neighborhood that Saturday. You'll have a great time on three carpeted courts, dine on fine Italian food, enjoy spirited bocce play and vie for CMBBR (Commonwealth of Massachusetts Bocce Bragging Rights!).

Boccemon Tom McNutt got a kick out of last week's bocce video "Bocce Said She Was Eighteen".

"I love that video considering our Rain Country Blend has been used to surface bocce courts at several Penitentiaries including Leavenworth Federal Pen. in Leavenworth, Kansas.

Recently we were contacted by the Monroe State Pen. in Washington. Trying to get the girls to come play at our tournament in April if they get paroled (kidding). I am going to set up the outdoor speakers and surprise my Wednesday night bocce group with it soon."

Tony Cole from sonomacountybocce.org writes...

"I just signed up for your newsletter Joyofbocce. We are a new league in Santa Rosa, California with over a hundred players with 14 teams. We start our first play on April 13th with 4 courts 13'x91'. We joined the USA Bocce Federation. We are looking forward to a great year.
Do you have any thoughts for a new league?"

{Sounds like you are off to a great start with players, courts, newsletter sign-up and affiliation with the US Bocce Federation. You must have excellent leadership. Keep us posted and send photos when you get started. For now, our readers will check you out at http://sonomacountybocce.org .}

Sam from Four Sams Concrete Generations sent us an idea for a bocce bench some time ago. He's back with an update...

"Here is the proposed Bocce Bench item that will be ready early this year. It will be available in WALL ART OR GARDEN COURT BENCH also. It measures 15"X 32" and was inspired by the old FOLIO WINES grape box. This has been a labor of love. I play and love the game myself. Again this is the ORIGINAL and the molds are being made as I write this email.

I welcome all input....SAM

LOVE YOUR SITE....I play with the BULLHEAD BOCCE Club in Scranton, PA.

Photos of the week
This week's great pictures were submitted by New Jersey Invitational's Frank Valanzola. Frank writes...

"Here is a great shot of a September 11, 1949 Bocce Game hosted by the 15 Club which was a summer outing in Oradell, New Jersey for the customers and guests of The Lakewood Tavern located in Jersey City, New Jersey.

My grandfather, Peter Placito is the gentleman with the handkerchief around his neck and the owner of the bar/restaurant." {Click the photo right to view the picture Frank alludes to.}

When I asked Frank for a little more info he wrote...

"The 15 Club was hosted by my grandfather that year (1949) but it was a bar/restaurant owners' association and each year they would organize an outing. One notable member was Dolly Sinatra, Frank's mom., who owned a bar on Willow St. in Hoboken for many years.

Bocce was a big part of the outing and everyone looked forward to the annual outing to re-challenge former rivals."

{Our readers LOVE seeing bocce played in other areas. Please follow Frank's lead and send photos of bocce from your neck of the woods!}

Bocce product of the week
Bocce Court Maintenance Tools

I’ve seen all kinds of home-made court maintenance brushes and scrapers. Two things have always struck me about them. 1 – they look like they are home-made and 2 – they tend to be HEAVY.

7' Drag Brush

Manufactured by Lee Tennis (makers of the Har-Tru surface material), this court maintenance tool created for tennis courts works exceptionally well for bocce courts. The 7-foot drag brush is light-weight and, even if you have a 13- or 14-foot wide court, you can smooth it over with just two passes. This is quick enough to do between games without keeping players waiting very long.

Bristles are 4 ½ inches of synthetic fibers and the strong but light-weight frame is aluminum. Retails for $179.95 plus shipping.

Lute/scarifier

This strangely named 30” wide device is actually two implements in one. It is an all-aluminum combination tool for scarifying, leveling, and removing loose court material.

Strong and sturdy, the tool is light enough to handle with ease and is excellent for spreading new material during top-dressing. The concave shape of the 30” wide blade allows the tool to “float” along the surface without digging in. Use the serrated edge to scrape material from high spots, then flip the tool over to rake and smooth that spot and drag the loose material to fill in a lower point. Retails for $69.95 plus shipping.

Besides a heavy roller, the lute/scarifier and 7-foot drag brush should be all the maintenance tools a bocce court owner needs.
