Greetings Bocce Faithful,

This Saturday (4/30/11) is our Massachusetts Senior Games Bocce Tournament. Come on by if you happen to be in the neighborhood of the Sons of Italy Lodge #902 (155 Marston St., Lawrence, Massachusetts).

Bocce is an approved sport at a lot of state senior games, but not yet at the Senior Olympics, where you qualify in your state one year and compete at the Senior Olympics the next. I wonder if perhaps one of the things hurting Bocce is the fact that the age of the participants is not so critical. For example, in sports like basketball the teams break down by age: 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, etc. The 52 year old can't play with the 65 to 69 year olds. He'd have a huge advantage. But in Bocce who could care if the 50's were playing in the same bracket as the 60's. In hoops, a big advantage - in Bocce, not so much.

Our local newspaper is doing a story on our team that is headed to California for the Nationals. I think they like the angle that we're willing to travel all the way across the country to get spanked by the Big Dogs and still have a great time.

Hope to see you in June at Campo di Bocce Los Gatos and/or Livermore. If you have stories, anecdotes, or photos for the ezine, bring those along too.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Bocce news and readers' feedback...
{Publisher's comments in brackets}

And the last shall be first…

{This was my write-up on the finals of our Havana Rollers Bocce League where the last place team in the regular season standings came on to win the title, defeating the 3 seed, the 1 seed, and the 2 seed in that order.}

You could feel it as soon as you entered the Sons of Italy. This would be no ordinary night of bocce competition. There was an aura of championship greatness in the venue. The enormity of the stakes represented a new order of magnitude. One team would emerge as the prestigious Havana Rollers Bocce Champions – the other would languish on the brink of public ignominy.

The heavily favored Ravioli jumped out to an early lead and took the first match vs. the Stoners in convincing style. The outstanding play of Jay Bonanno, Jonathan Bonanno and Bob Mogli proved too much for the seemingly overmatched Stoners.

The 6th seeded Stoners continued to struggle in the second match, falling behind 6 – 0 and appeared headed for a humiliating defeat. Then, the always composed Tony Perrone rallied the troops. Veterans Bob Bonanno and 2009 playoff MVP Tony Bellia raised their games to the next level, pointing and hitting with extraordinary skill. The cellar dwelling Stoners mounted an improbable come-back, somehow winning the second match and forcing the all-important “rubber match”.

The tension in the air was palpable. How could these twelve remarkably skilled athletes summon the fortitude to deal with such intense, all-encompassing pressure? We mortals could only guess at what they were to endure.

The final game proved a classic contest of one-up-manship with each team’s player making a better shot than his opponent’s. Bob Andrew came up big. Then Earl Martin came up bigger. Captain Lou DiPrizio came up BIG. Then Captain Tony Perrone came up even BIGGER. Stoners Rich Bonanno and Kevin Gallant pointed brilliantly. Ravioli’s Rick Stanley played with nerves of steel, honed over decades of dangerous police work.

The crowd of nearly 200 stayed until the final ball was rolled and the Cinderella story had its fairy tale ending. In a great moment in sports, the last placed Stoners took home all the marbles. Years from now people will surely ask, “Where were you that night in 2011 when the Stoners won the Havana Rollers title?” Indelibly etched in your mind, you’ll remember that you were one of the lucky ones who, for one shining moment, were in the presence of greatness.

In 2009 the game was Singles

SENIOR GAMES MASSACHUSETTS

My group is running the Massachusetts Senior Games Bocce once again (I'm on the Mass. Senior Games Board of Directors). We'll host it this year at the Sons of Italy Lodge #902 at 155 Marston St. in Lawrence, Massachusetts. See the listing below under Tourneys on April 30, 2011.

Our non-profit group is the Ken Waldie Senior Sports Circuit, Inc. We're named after my friend Ken Waldie who was on one of the flights that hit the WTC on 9/11. We play senior sports (age 50 and up) in bocce, basketball, and softball. Ken was the only guy in the history of the Naval Academy to be elected president of his class all four years - a remarkable accomplishment! Learn more about Ken here:

http://www.KenWaldieSSC.org/KenWaldie.ivnu .

If you'd like to make a contribution to our organization that keeps Ken's name alive and provides healthy physical activities for seniors, click here and know that it will be appreciated and put to good use.

http://www.kenwaldiessc.org/contributions.ivnu

And come and join us for bocce if you will be in the neighborhood on Saturday, April 30. You'll have a great time on three carpeted courts, dine on fine Italian food, enjoy spirited bocce play and vie for CMBBR (Commonwealth of Massachusetts Bocce Bragging Rights!).

Gene Dictor sends this...

"I live in an adult community in Central Florida, Kissimmee. Over the past 4 years I have started two bocce clubs, one for beginners open to men and women which now has about 85 members. This is a very successful club which plays 3 times a week. In the past year I have started a men's only club for more advanced players. We are known as the Bocce Boyz. What I would like to know is if there are any clubs in Central Florida that I can get in touch with to set up some friendly competition."

{I'm not sure about Central Florida, but you might get in touch with Richard Curreri. He runs the Southwest Florida Bocce Conference. They have lots of teams and venues and, if anyone knows where players might be located, it's Richard.

Check out some of their venues here:

Bocce product of the week
Bocce Court Maintenance Tools

I’ve seen all kinds of home-made court maintenance brushes and scrapers. Two things have always struck me about them. 1 – they look like they are home-made and 2 – they tend to be HEAVY.

7' Drag Brush

Manufactured by Lee Tennis (makers of the Har-Tru surface material), this court maintenance tool created for tennis courts works exceptionally well for bocce courts. The 7-foot drag brush is light-weight and, even if you have a 13- or 14-foot wide court, you can smooth it over with just two passes. This is quick enough to do between games without keeping players waiting very long.

Bristles are 4 ˝ inches of synthetic fibers and the strong but light-weight frame is aluminum. Retails for $179.95 plus shipping.

Lute/scarifier

This strangely named 30” wide device is actually two implements in one. It is an all-aluminum combination tool for scarifying, leveling, and removing loose court material.

Strong and sturdy, the tool is light enough to handle with ease and is excellent for spreading new material during top-dressing. The concave shape of the 30” wide blade allows the tool to “float” along the surface without digging in. Use the serrated edge to scrape material from high spots, then flip the tool over to rake and smooth that spot and drag the loose material to fill in a lower point. Retails for $69.95 plus shipping.

Besides a heavy roller, the lute/scarifier and 7-foot drag brush should be all the maintenance tools a bocce court owner needs.
