Hi again my Bocce friends,

I spent last week helping to build a bocce court at a residence on Nantucket. The family treated us very well, even letting us live in their guest house during the construction. I hope to post photos in the near future. Who knows, maybe we'll start a bocce court construction trend on the island.

Hope to see you in June at Campo di Bocce Los Gatos and/or Livermore. If you have stories, anecdotes, or photos for the ezine, please bring those along too.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

USA BOCCE FUND-RAISER

Mitch from USABocce.com has set the date for his annual Special Olympics fund-raiser. He writes...

"The second annual USABOCCE.com Tournament for the Special Olympics - June 3-4-5 - is just around the corner. This tournament has one of the highest payouts in the country for its size. First place $3500 with just a field of 40 teams. Last year at our inaugural tournament we had teams represented from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, New York, Maryland, Washington D.C. and Canada. JJ’s Lighthouse from Sharon, Pennsylvania took first place at last year's event.

This year's tournament will be located at the Bessemer Croatian Club, Bessemer, PA. Tournament information can be found at http://www.usabocce.com or call Mitchie @ 724-333-6385. We still have a few open spots and it’s a first-come first-serve basis."

BALANCE BALANCE BALANCE

I remember a couple years back when I was coming out of my storage shed in the middle of winter and I slipped on the ramp for getting the lawn mower in and out. I fell on my backside and stayed there for quite a while looking up at the sky.

I don't fall, I thought. I never fall. I remember in my youth being tripped up by my rough-housing friends and somehow I always kept my balance. I was an athlete. Well, I guess when you hit the late fifties, there's a new sheriff in town. Since then I've hit the dirt and gym floor with increased regularity.

But what I saw recently on Nantucket Island was just amazing. Last week Rockman Construction and The Joy of Bocce were building a bocce court at a residence there. The family was very cordial and even let our crew stay in their fully stocked guest house.

The foreman on the crew is the Rockman himself, Mike Esposito of Boston College and Atlanta Falcons football fame.

While looking over the progress of the court, Mike stepped back with his right foot and stepped on a large (misplaced) loam rake and it looked like he was going to hit the dirt hard. He stumbled backwards and turned his body to the left and was about to put his left foot down when he saw a trowel (also misplaced) in his way. Somehow he avoided the trowel and landed inside the court, but now he was about to trip over the court's sideboard. He stepped over the sideboard, landing on his right foot, pivoting around and bringing his left foot down and...there he was... in an upright position.

The crew stood there in amazement, mouths agape. We just witnessed why this world class athlete was so hard to tackle. A former 9.7 sprinter, he told me "If I see you coming, I'm awfully tough to take down. If you blind-side me you might bring me down."

Mike is a perfectionist. He builds things with the same passion that he used training and working at football. He's a hard-driving worker, a "bull" who puts in long hours to make sure the client is happy with his work.

Photos to follow soon.

WORLD SERIES OF BOCCE

The Toccolana Club's Jim Rizio reminds us about this year's World Series of Bocce - July 15 - 17, 2011 in Rome, New York.

Check the web site out here:

Jim Rizio is also on the committee for the World Series of Bocce held at the Toccolana Club in Rome, NY.

He writes...

"We want to use steel chrome pallinos this year but aren't having any luck finding 50 mm ones. All we can find are the 42 mm ones from DaVinciBocce.com. Can you be of any help in finding 50 mm pallinos?"

I answered...

"These are really just ball bearings. I brought my vacuum cleaner into the Electrolux place to get repaired and the owner had them to show that he could pick up three of them at once with the vacuum cleaner. So, maybe a vacuum place near you or someone that creates ball bearing will have them.

I'll post your email in the ezine and let's see if anyone out there knows where to find them.}

MOONLIGHT BOCCE

My group ran a bocce fund-raiser recently that started at 6:30 PM with twelve teams on just three courts - a recipe for a long night. I got this email from one of the finalists - Jerry Arcari of Landry & Arcari Oriental Rugs and Carpeting...

"Had a great time last night once again and thanks for your hard work.

Would you please call my wife? She does not believe I was playing bocce till midnight!"

********************************************************************************************

I received this excellent email from John Lehmann of BocceNation.com.

"I wanted to introduce myself and our company, http://www.boccenation.com.

But first I want to congratulate you on the great work you do with your Joy of Bocce book and especially the ezines that you send out. It’s an amazing amount of work doing a single posting, yet you have years and years worth of articles. They are most interesting, informative and all show the joy that you have for the game, the traditions and the people who are fortunate enough to experience bocce. You truly are the ambassador of bocce.

We started our company in hopes of exposing bocce to a large swath of people who wouldn’t get an opportunity to play bocce at a regular or regulation facility. My background for the past 20+ years is in corporate sports events. I started a sports marketing firm along with a dozen former Wimbledon champions, specializing in events, exhibitions and endorsements.

From there I founded two other sports marketing firms that specialized in teambuilding, corporate Olympics and client entertainment events. That’s where we discovered bocce and all of the compelling reasons that make it such a great sport and activity. We designed a complete, inclusive and portable bocce kit so that people, groups, companies and organizations could play bocce virtually anywhere.

Being an event person, the area that we’ve focused on is providing programming as well. Programming for events, charities, schools and groups that includes a variety of formats. We’ve even developed Target Bocce™, similar to Target Tennis that we used for many years, where people have the opportunity to roll one or more bocce balls at a target in order to win prizes. It has been wildly popular at our events and charity functions.

We’ve also begun a nationwide league system, American Bocce League, where participants can create their own leagues using a standardized national format.

And yes we realize our form of bocce is a smaller court, without side walls and a bit of a different scoring system. We have the utmost respect and reverence for traditional bocce and its customs – we are simply trying to expose as many people to the sport as possible.

As such, we developed a free iPhone app under the heading of 'Bocce-Ball' http://itunes.apple.com/be/app/bocce-ball/id414782227?mt=8. After two days we became the #1 app in Italy. After one week we had over a quarter of a million downloads and as of this morning we have had 800,000 downloads – with an expectation that we’ll reach 1,000,0000 downloads by this weekend. In short, it’s been an astonishing response and testimony to bocce’s popularity. At one point last week we were ranked #5 worldwide on iTunes.

Mario, we are working on a few different programs that I would like to get your input and opinion on as you likely know more about bocce in the U.S. than anyone else.

I look forward to speaking with you whenever it’s convenient."

{This group sounds like they have real "movers and shakers" on board. I look forward to meeting and seeing what plans we can make to help bocce grow.}

Perfetta Bocce - 107 mm - red/green/pallino/carry bag...

Photos of the week
This week's photo comes courtesy of Tom Belluomini who writes about his Dream Come True!

"Finally a Dream Come True. After many years of trying to find Bocce courts to play on that were not busy with all sorts of people on them, finally our search and worry is over.

I just have to walk out of my house into the back yard say 'Good Morning and Thank You Lord' and proceed to roll those little Red and Green Balls down our new bocce court.

After several months of planning and designing the look we wanted, work was completed by a terrific hard working young man named Donovan Green who owns his own landscaping business named Bridge Street Designs in (Campbell) San Jose, California. I would highly recommend him to anyone in the San Jose, San Mateo, Morgan Hill area in Northern California and to give Donovan a Call and let him build you one of the finest I've ever played on.

Ours has a three inch rock base with four inches of smooth concrete on top, and that was followed by putting on the newest Bocce Turf called 'Texas Grass One Putt.' We also added on court seating areas so that all who are not playing continue to be involved in the game. I've notice over the years that when benches are on the outside of the court, people are not paying much attention to the game and the shots that are being made.

Hope to see you at the Championships at Campo Di Bocce. Also keep up the Good Work you are doing with The Joy Of Bocce E-Zine."

{I questioned Tom a little more and he added the following info...}

"The Court length is 69 feet and the width is 11 feet to accommodate the 'Sun Canopy' that will sit atop the court curbs.

We added color to the court by using a concrete stain. A special sealer that allows the stain to adhere better was put on first then followed by the concrete stain called Fawn from Behr paint products at Home Depot.

We also stained the Redwood Side Boards with a color called Cedar Tone to protect the boards from the elements of weather.

But we also discovered that pressurized boards do not rebound the bocce ball as well as the dried natural redwood planks. The wood used was 2x6 in 12 foot lengths and had been stored in a very dry area. These boards actually rebound the ball almost half the court depending on the angle used. Almost like a rebound from a pool table.

That is what I was really looking for from our court, besides of course the true roll of the bocce ball which now is almost like those found at Campo Di Bocce.

What our contractor did was to space the bolts holding the side boards every four feet to get that needed tight compact against the curb.

I do hope some of your readers can use some of this information in the future if they intend to build their own court some day."

{Please follow Tom's lead and send info and photos from your bocce travels. I'd love to post them here. And our readers LOVE seeing courts from other parts of the country/world.}
