Hello again my weekly bocce friends,

By the time you read these words I'll probably be at California's Campo di Bocce competing at the Nationals in Open Rules and Punto Raffa Volo. My team will be there from June 27 - July 1. It should be great fun. I hope I can get an ezine out next week (July 4) with results.

Several readers responded to my request for a fourth Open player to take the place of one of our teammates who had to cancel because of work related issues. Faithful Joy of Bocce Weekly reader Bob Meola will round out our team. Here's just a little of Bob's enthusiastic email response...

"Are you serious? You want to recruit a team member for the nationals? You 'don't play so well.' You 'have a great time.'

I probably don't play as well as your not so well. I would love to join you to have a great time.

I can't believe you posed the question and I can't believe I am responding. But I am serious. If you will have me, I will play!"

Bob's obviously got a great attitude - he'll fit right in with our gang!

I'm scheduled to do a short talk and a book signing while at the event, but I'm sorry to tell you that I can't pinpoint the exact time or date just yet. It will be announced during the event when an appropriate time unfolds and hopefully, we'll draw a crowd. Although, without advance planning, that might be hard to do.

I do a lot of public speaking and bocce is my favorite topic - come on down if you are in the neighborhood - call Campo for precise time and date.

DaVinci Bocce's Mike Grasser sent my team a beautiful set of Super Martel bocce. I had almost forgotten that we'd need a set of 6 identical balls for Triples play in PRV (three players, two bocce each). Mike does more for bocce in the USA than just about anyone. Visit his website at http://www.DaVinciBocce.com .

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Campo's Ben Musolf updates us on the Nationals...

"As I am sure you are well aware, the 2011 United States Bocce Championships will be taking place next week, June 24 - July 2, 2011. I am sending you this email because we have either discussed Bocce in the past, or you are involved one way or another with the upcoming Championships.

Attached you will see 3 photos { I posted just the one to the right - click it for a better view } of the billboards that are strategically placed around the entire Bay Area, from Walnut Creek to San Jose, and up the peninsula.

Peroni Beer has made this happen along with the Miller Coors family. Without them, it would never have happened. I am so grateful and excited that the sport of Bocce is finally being recognized as a true sport, and simply not just a pastime!

I invite each and every one of you and your friends and families to come out and see some of the country's best Bocce players compete for the right to represent our country in the upcoming World Championships.

The 2012 World Championships will be taking place at Campo di Bocce of Livermore, May 19 - 27, 2012. So fasten your seatbelts everyone, Bocce is going on a ride like never before.

If you, or anyone you may know is interested in promoting yourself/themselves on the global level, please have them call me at their earliest convenience.

Thanks for all of your support; we would not be in this position if it were not for you!

Thanks again and we look forward to seeing you next week!"

Tireless Peter Di Turi is still at it...

"...June 25 marks the start of the 2011 United States Bocce Championships from the Campo di Bocce venues of Los Gatos and Livermore, CA. The best bocce players in the nation will meet to play in Open, Volo, Raffa Shooting and Punto Raffa Volo individual and team events. Starting on Tuesday, June 28, your new home for bocce is Bocce1! at Bocce1.com ! Featuring access to tournament players, tournament brackets, event schedules, Webcast schedules, up-to-the-minute scores, standings, great bocce links and more! Bocce1! is a great place for great bocce information! US National Championship coverage runs from Wednesday, June 28 through Saturday, July 2.

But that's not all!! Catch the action via its links to two new Webcasting channels - Bocce1 (livestream.com/bocce1) and Bocce2 (livestream.com/bocce2) streaming live and taped bocce broadcasts to pique and keep your interest! You can even interact with your fellow players and fans any time via the Livestream chat for each channel, Bocce1! Facebook page, or Bocce1TV Twitter feed! I'll be doing most play-by-play coverage on Bocce1, but be sure to open a new browser window to Bocce2 to watch TWO great live, free matches at once!

The winners from the US Nationals tournament will compete in next year's World Bocce Championships, to be held in May 2012 for the first time on American soil - and again at the Campo di Bocce venues! Best of all, there's no viewer limit and no commercial interruptions between now and end of July to watch this event and the on-demand replays of the matches!

Summer in Auburn is heating up, so I hope that you'll join me to crown a new state champion open bocce team at Auburn's Les Gove Park, home of the Washington State Bocce Championships! Until then, buon gioco and happy bocce to you!"

NATIONAL BOCCE DAY

Recently I met with John Lehmann at the bocce courts in the North End of Boston. He has a terrific background in running corporate sports events. His BocceNation.com is promoting bocce and gaining national attention. They have an iPhone Bocce App that has been downloaded well over a million times.

John Lehmann and his staff look like they have the marketing skills and savvy to give our game a big lift. Let's see what we can do to help. If you haven't seen BocceNation's "bocce in a bag" - balls, measuring device, portable court, scoreboard, and more - you can check it out here: http://www.boccenation.com/shop.html .

John and I shared a lot of bocce information and his group is promoting a National Bocce Day - check out the website @ http://www.NationalBocceDay.com . The idea is to run a charity event on August 13 and raise funds for the charity of your choice.

My group has decided to honor our late friend Bill Hadley with a tourney to raise money for his favorite charity - The Wounded Warrior Regiment.

More info: http://www.WoundedWarriorRegiment.org

If you decide to run an event, send me the info to post and then let us know how much you raised and for which charity. We'll post the Total of National Bocce Day Funds Raised. National Bocce Day - ya gotta love it!

National Championship Notes

A couple of items concerning the upcoming Nationals at Campo di Bocce...

1) I'll be there competing in the Punto Raffa Volo and the Open B tourneys. My gang only plays PRV about once every other year - but we like it and keep trying to get better at it. We decided to play in the Open B because we have almost no experience on those super fast court surfaces. If we improve this time around we'll give the A division a shot.

2) Please come by and say hello. If you have bocce stories, anecdotes or pictures please bring them too. And if you could attend my short bocce talk and book signing, that would be appreciated. I think you'll enjoy hearing some of my bocce stories and anecdotes. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Elizabeth Jade Wong Fontana sends great comments and video...

"I can already see who ESPN would go to if they need someone to interview the younger group of players who are the future of bocce. Joey Bernardi gave me one of the best off the cuff commentaries during this match between Hungary and Germany. His comments were dynamic and spontaneous because he had inside information to provide to the viewers. He became fast friends with one of the opponents, Jakob Kraus of Germany, who was playing against one of the rising stars of European bocce, Boglar Szrapko. Joey, himself had faced off against Boglar. So he was able to offer us his 'vetted' views on her talents.

Perfetta Bocce - 107 mm - red/green/pallino/carry bag...

Photos of the week
This week's photos were submitted by Randy Johnson who writes...

"I thought you would like to see the photos from Southgate, our new apartment project in Worcester {Massachusetts - 140 Grand Street} - just completed construction, with new bocce court.

We included bocce because of its accessibility - it has an accessible entrance off the entrance terrace.

Have yet to throw the first ball. Thanks for your input earlier in the project."

{I pass through Worcester a lot on my way to my home town of Springfield, Mass. I'll swing by one day and take a couple more shots and maybe try out the court.

{Please follow Randy's lead and send info and photos from your bocce travels. I'd love to post them here. And our readers LOVE seeing courts from other parts of the country/world.}
