Greetings Bocce Pals,

We're still busy with bocce happenings hereabouts. August is always a big month for us. Don't forget National Bocce Day coming up on August 13, 2011.

http://nationalbocceday.com/banners/participate/

Our group is honoring our late friend Bill Hadley by running a 8/13 bocce tourney and fund-raiser for his favorite charity - the Marines Wounded Warrior Regiment. Why don't you think about using bocce to raise funds for your charity of choice?

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Judy Verona Joseph interviewed me at the Nationals at Campo di Bocce and was kind enough to send us the finished video...

Don't forget August 13 - National Bocce Day. It's a great time to run a charity event. Ours is in honor of our late friend Bill Hadley and will raise money for the Marines Wounded Warrior Regiment. Details under Tourney news below.

Liz Edmunds from Boccenation.com sends this...

"We're so thrilled that you'll be celebrating National Bocce Day in Boston, and I've attached our press release template to this e-mail. The highlighted sections are those that specify your events unique details, and if you fill it out I can send it to national and local media outlets for you. Also, I'd love a brief quote from you about National Bocce Day, or bocce in general, seeing as you're the premiere authority on bocce. We'd love to have a 'sound bite' from you on our site so that everyone who visits Nationalbocceday.com is exposed to the richness of the bocce community (particularly Joy of Bocce)."

{If you are running an August 13th event, contact Liz at 561-983-6990 or Liz@BocceNation.com .}

Bocce star/poker star Pat Pezzin reminds me that I have failed to list under Tourney news the 2011 World Club Championships taking place in Brazil on Oct 9th-16th 2011.

My mistake - Palazzo di Bocce will be representing the USA and Pat and his team from Toronto 777 Bocce Club will represent Canada.

Pat also sends a link to this poker/bocce video (he's got a deal with PokerStars and is one of their Team-Pros http://www.pokerstars.com/team-pokerstars/ )

At a recent poker tournament at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut he was featured talking about bocce during the taping of the poker tournament. The video is 45 minutes long. His interview happens around the 19:30 mark which was taped for ESPN but it hasn't aired yet.

http://www.pokerstars.tv/poker-video-9559-napt-2-mohegan-sun-bounty-shootout-flight-b.html?channel_id=184

{What a great life Pat's got. He plays bocce and poker and is VERY good at both! I play bocce, softball, and basketball and hope to be good at ONE of them some day.}

Can any reader help with this request?

"Do you know of any official Bocce Leagues in the Charleston, SC area?"

{REPLY to me or directly to momsez@optonline.net .}

"The 2011 Marshall Superstore Cleveland International Challenge Cup of Bocce is August 19-20-21, 2011.
We hope you will again join us for this great tournament. Marshall Superstore, the Mayfield Holiday Inn, and the City of Mayfield Heights have been great partners in assisting Club Molisani's effort to put on a first-class bocce tournament.

Photos of the week
This week's photos come courtesy of Tony Cole who is on the board of the Sonoma County Bocce Federation in Santa Rosa, CA.

Says Tony, "I would like to tell you a little bit about our new league. SCBF is a newly formed 501(c)3 incorporated organization and already includes many teams and local sponsors. League play starts in the spring and lasts through early fall. SCBF is being organized to promote the sport of Bocce through education and amateur competition and for the enjoyment of both players and spectators. We have grown from two nights to three nights of play a week in a very short time, with 24 teams that include 160 playing members.

We joined the US Bocce Federation at the start with the help from Jerry South, Vice President of North Bay Federation. SCBF hosted the Bocce program for Sonoma Wine Country Senior Games, a first time for Bocce. I'm sending you some pictures of the senior games. I would like to add a link to Joy of Bocce on our website under 'links' and hope you would do the same.

{DONE}

Please take a look at our website, this will let you know how strong SCBF has become in just 7 months. I don't know if you ever do a story line on new leagues in your weekly? If so keep us in mind."

Bocce product of the week
Bocce Court Maintenance Tools

I’ve seen all kinds of home-made court maintenance brushes and scrapers. Two things have always struck me about them. 1 – they look like they are home-made and 2 – they tend to be HEAVY.

7' Drag Brush

Manufactured by Lee Tennis (makers of the Har-Tru surface material), this court maintenance tool created for tennis courts works exceptionally well for bocce courts. The 7-foot drag brush is light-weight and, even if you have a 13- or 14-foot wide court, you can smooth it over with just two passes. This is quick enough to do between games without keeping players waiting very long.

Bristles are 4 ˝ inches of synthetic fibers and the strong but light-weight frame is aluminum. Retails for $179.95 plus shipping.

Lute/scarifier

This strangely named 30” wide device is actually two implements in one. It is an all-aluminum combination tool for scarifying, leveling, and removing loose court material.

Strong and sturdy, the tool is light enough to handle with ease and is excellent for spreading new material during top-dressing. The concave shape of the 30” wide blade allows the tool to “float” along the surface without digging in. Use the serrated edge to scrape material from high spots, then flip the tool over to rake and smooth that spot and drag the loose material to fill in a lower point. Retails for $69.95 plus shipping.

Besides a heavy roller, the lute/scarifier and 7-foot drag brush should be all the maintenance tools a bocce court owner needs.
