Hello again bocce friends,

Our outdoor, informal bocce leagues have moved indoors for the Fall and Winter seasons. We've set up four courts on carpet in a 260 foot long greenhouse with heat, lights, and all the proper amenities.

We have leagues in the morning and most evenings with 12 teams of four players some nights and as many as 16 teams of four playing on other nights. Meanwhile, plans are in the works for a new facility (with bocce) being built by the Sons of Italy Lodge #902 which we hope will be ready for play by the summer of 2012.

Things are still hopping here in the East. Outings, ribbon-cutting ceremonies and other bocce events abound. I hope the same is true of bocce in your neck of the woods!

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Bocce news and readers' feedback...

Out with the OLD, in with the NEW

One of our bocce members (Dr. Joe Kalil) submitted the photo to the right which depicts our Sons of Italy in the process of being razed to make room for an auto dealership.

Not to worry though, we expect to have a brand new facility a couple miles away that will house four international bocce courts with state of the art polyurethane resin. Some of us are hoping that these courts will make us a tad more competitive with the caliber of players we meet at venues like Campo di Bocce and Palazzo di Bocce. One can only hope, and practice!

Who knows, maybe some of you from around the USA and Canada will find your way to one of our events here in Methuen, Massachusetts. We're just 1/2 hour from Boston, close to the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and not so far from Rhode Island.

Recently I was invited to inspect a bocce court recently constructed at the home of a very wealthy person. Actually, it was a VERY WEALTHY person. More precisely, it was an EXTREMELY WEALTHY person who shall remain nameless.

There were a great many workers on site and the builders wanted to know why the court wasn't draining so quickly. The problem with the court was that it was set below grade and had surface water in spots after recent heavy rains. It featured a Har-Tru top dressing (the so-called tennis court clay). Har-Tru drains, but not so quickly as stone dust, limestone, and other common surfaces. But it does drain - it's not actually clay - rather metabasalt with a binding agent.

A second problem with the court was that the perimeter was made of granite - no wood for balls to carom off. When I told the crew that the balls would chip and the granite would surely crack, they seemed unaware of just how bocce is played.

All of this makes me wonder why builders (this was a crew of very skilled craftsmen) wouldn't call in someone knowledgeable about bocce as a consultant? I almost think the workers should be bocce players. Heck, who better to know how a court should play.

Finally, I left thinking...Why wouldn't you put the best bocce court in the world in this fellow's back yard? Go figure.

Bocce Court Opening

I spent a most pleasant afternoon in Dublin, NH attending a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new bocce court overlooking Mount Monadnock.

Christopher Sprague is the proud new owner of a great court. {Back in the day, we used to break a bottle of Chianti over new courts, but we've gotten a lot smarter since then. Now we drink the Chianti and cut a ribbon instead.}

Says Sprague in his invitation...

"We need players and watchers alike to help us mark the completion of our bocce court! Expert Mario Pagnoni, author of the best selling Joy of Bocce, shown below will discuss the history of the game, provide tips to improve your play, and offer humorous anecdotes from around the world. With this primer, we look forward to some spirited play.

Hope to see you!"

Photos of the week
This week's photos were submitted by Tom Motzel of Eagan, MN.

They show off his newly completed bocce court. Tom wrote to me and Tom McNutt thanking us for his help with ideas for the construction...

********************************************************************************************

Tom and Mario,

I want to thank both of you for your help. (Mario, I read your book cover to cover about 3 times! It was a great introduction to the game and will help me and others enjoy this court to its fullest.) I have included a few pictures...although I wish I could have gotten done before the leaves fell. We've already had about 4 nights of great games with friends and neighbors....can't wait for spring to get a regular league started. :)

The court surface is just over an inch of 3/8" and down crushed limestone from a special quarry that produces its reddish color. 90% of this mix is much less than 3/8", so it has packed nice and hard. By the way, they refer to this material as ag-lime in our area.

If any of you are ever in the Twin Cities, let me know. Beer, Burgers and Bocce are on me!

P.S. - Michael Grasser was a great help as well, but I can't find his email address...do either of you have it?
