Greetings bocce pals,

Had some very bad news recently as the "powers that be" at the Dunkin Donuts Center canceled the two Providence tourneys - just a tad too prematurely, don't you think? Details under "Bocce news" below...

Despite that punch in the gut tidbit of bad news, bocce is in the air hereabouts with the weather unseasonably warm for early March. Our gang is eagerly anticipating a new bocce home with four international sized courts of our own. We New Englanders are a hearty bunch. We'll perservere and keep working to grow our game.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

America Runs on Dunkin'?

Yikes! The "Powers That Be" cancelled the Providence Tourneys with almost 8 weeks to go. About a week ago Kayla Beauvais (who did yeoman's work trying to get the events off the ground - Bless Her Heart!) called to say that the brass were getting worried about the lack of teams signing up in advance.

We had a dozen teams paid and I knew that my own bocce group would enter another 6 teams which would bring us to 18 teams.

"Can't you wait until the end of March to see where we are?" I asked.

What's the rush? We'd probably have 20 teams by March 31 with another 12 to 20 (or more) coming in by late April. Honestly, calls and emails were coming in every day and players were jockeying for position to see which players they could recruit for the event. I got emails and calls from the Toronto 777 Club, Florida, even Michigan's Palazzo di Bocce.

A lot of people, including yours truly were very disappointed. And this early exit leaves a bad taste in people's mouths. If you tried to run this again next April, I think the response might be dismal.

I tried to tell the Dunkin' crew that teams don't sign in 7 or 8 weeks ahead of time unless they need a spot in the event because they're traveling and need to secure air faire. Most teams come in a couple weeks before.

My friend Paul DiCicco from Wickliffe, Ohio who helps run a very successful, long-running annual event wrote...

"You are right on about people signing up late...we usually end up with 96 teams at the Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce, but we don't get 60 of them until the last week of sign-ups."

Anyway, the Dunkin' crowd thought that we would get 50 or 60 teams the first year. This is a tad unrealistic. Thirty to forty would be a good showing for the first year.

To get programs off the ground you have to: First - don't cancel 8 weeks out. Next - run a quality program so that the word gets out. A realistic number of teams for this event would have been 32 to 40 teams, which I believe would have been an artistic, if not financial, success. The following year you'd get 50 or more teams and the following could grow to 60 or 70. That's just the way things go.

Of course, all of this is easy for me to say. I'm not paying the prize money or building the courts or buying the carpet. Someone on the staff figured that there was room for fourteen 12' by 60' courts, so they decided to build fourteen courts at about $1000 each, I believe.

When they started their early panic I said, save some money. Build 8 courts. Build 6 courts. Fewer courts, less carpet. Hey, don't want to build courts, come get our courts in Methuen and truck them to Providence.

If the event went off with say 32 teams (a nice number - lends itself to pool or group play) the Dunkin' Donuts Center would have lost money, but would have covered the initial cost of the courts and carpet and could build for the following year. More than that, they'd have the ability to run corporate parties, outings and team building events with bocce in the months of July and August when things are slow at the Center.

I think the fact that the Friday charity event wasn't well received put the money tournament out of business. If the charity event was held, I think the money tourney would have gone on as well.

The sad thing about all of this is that the Powers That Be are great at looking at the bottom line. They are quick to make decisions, but they never seem to defer to someone else who may have more experience in an area than they do. I wish they had invited me to their final meeting when they put an end to what should have been a really great event.

In any event, I offer my sincere apologies to all who were disappointed by the cancellation. I wish I could have been a more convincing advocate. I wish they could have stayed the execution a couple weeks - things would have looked better I'm sure.

One final thought - I met a lot of good, hard-working and friendly people who work for the Dunkin' Donuts Center. In the end, the decision to cancel was out of their hands. My heartfelt thanks go out to Kayla Beauvais who put in an excellent effort for all of us. She's a top shelf Dunkin' Donuts Event Coordinator.

Richard J. Curreri, Secretary/Treasurer of the Southwest Florida Bocce League sends news...

"It's been a long time since I wrote to you, so I thought I would send a few lines to you. Here in Southwest Florida we are peaking as far as our season is concerned. The Southwest Florida Bocce League has expanded out to sixteen (16) teams and split into two divisions, North and South. We have divisional playoffs coming up on March 21st and league championship games, best three of five, are being held on March 23rd.

It has been a very busy season. We had a One-on-One Competition, like an all-star game, in the middle of the season. The winner gets a cash prize and it varies depending on the number of entries. But most proudly we held our first 'Bocce for Blue' charity event. It raised over $7,500.00 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. I'm attaching two articles for you to read.

Stay well my friend. I always wait for your Ezine to come out. Great job, as always."

Jeff & Nola Thompson send news from Cheyenne, Wyoming...

"Sorry I did not contact you last year, although it was a good year for bocce. Sadly we lost one of our founding fathers, Jim Rauzi on Dec 30, 2010 but as true brothers of the sport we carried on as he would have insisted. He was the person who got us all into Bocce.

We had our Bocce Bash at Frontier Parks Indian Village here in Cheyenne last August 20th. It was a great day for Bocce and we raised a good sum of donations for our local charity, Boys and Girls Club of Cheyenne, Wyoming.

We learned after, there was a first annual 'National Bocce Day' on the 13th of August. Do you know if there will be another this year? This year we are tentatively looking at the 11th of August for our Bocce Bash, hopefully corresponding with a National Bocce Day. If you receive any info on a date for recognizing this day please let me know.

Our Mia Maria Chapter, Order Sons of Italy In America, Lodge# 2813 will also be continuing our Bocce League from June into September with proceeds going towards our Scholarship Fund at our local community college, Laramie County Community College, in Jim’s name. The league rotates around three different courts approx. 12’x60’.

Just wanted to give you an update from Wyoming and to say Buongiorno. We’ll take some photos of this year’s events and keep you posted."

{Can't wait to see photos and congratulations on the good work you are doing honoring your late friend and raising funds for charity and scholarships!

Not sure about another National Bocce Day - will let you know if I get wind of it.}

Perfetta Club Pro set of 4 red, 4 green, pallino, carry bag...

Photos of the week
This week's photos were taken by yours truly at The Foggia Club of Leominster, Massachusetts. They ran a nice little 16-team doubles tourney which was headed up by Logan DeCarolis who did an outstanding job.

The facility has a bar area, sitting area, and two nifty bocce courts. The courts are a little short for my taste because good hitters KILL you on short courts. Still, they've got a pretty nice set-up and a good group of players with a nice mixture of young and older guys. This event was men only I not sure if they have any women playing. Overall, this is a good venue for some pretty good bocce - if you are in the area, contact Logan at Logandecarolispga@Gmail.com .
