Hello once again bocce faithful readers,

Hope to see many of you at the annual Bellingham Bay Bocce Tournament. I'll be there with the Mrs. and we'll hang out with Boccemon Tom McNutt. If you will be in the neighborhood please come on by and say hello. We'll be visiting with the Boccemon Clan and seeing the Pacific Northwest up close and personal.

I'll do a short talk and a book signing and we are looking forward to the trip with much anticipation. Hope to see you there.

Locally, our bocce gang is eagerly awaiting our outdoor bocce season. We'll wait a little until the weather warms up a tad. Then we start outdoors playing each Monday morning at different courts within driving distance.

We still haven't broken ground yet for our new Sons of Italy with four international bocce courts in the works, but they tell me the construction will go quickly...once they get started/

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Nancie Wingo, Director of Alumni Relations at St. John’s College, Santa Fe Campus writes...

"Hello Joy of Bocce,

Thought I would share that this Saturday, April 14, 2012, we are beginning what I hope is a new tradition for St. John’s College on its Santa Fe campus; a bocce match between students and cadets from the Air Force Academy in Colorado. For thirty years there has been a croquet match between the Annapolis campus students and Naval Academy midshipmen, and this is our attempt to begin a similar tradition here in Santa Fe.

Below is a communication piece that was sent to our college community and local alumni about the event.

We’re all gearing up and are thrilled!

Excitement is building for the inaugural Bocce match between SJC and a team of Cadets from the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs this Saturday, April 14th. We’ll begin the day with a BBQ lunch on the Field (free for meal plan folks, $5 for everyone else) from Noon-1:30pm, then open Bocce play for folks interested in trying their hand at this ancient lawn game. Gelato will be served at 2pm, and the signature match between Johnnies and Cadets will begin at 3pm.

This past Saturday several student teams (undergrad and graduate) competed for the chance to represent SJC against the Cadets. An extremely competitive match yielded a winner…by one point in a tie breaker match!

Wear orange and black and come out on Saturday to cheer your team to victory as we begin a new tradition in Santa Fe.

If you have any questions about this event feel free to contact me at 505-984-6121 or nwingo@sjcsf.edu."

{Late word from Nancie = "It was a super inaugural event. The weather was challenging but fun was had by all. St. John's College beat Air Force 15 to 5.}

4/10/2012 - SUMMIT’S BOCCE PAVILION RAISES THE ROOF

The long awaited Bocce Pavilion for the Summit Seniors Bocce Program arrived today from a plant in Pennsylvania. Within hours, a group of Amish builders had the super structure erected to the delight of the Summit Senior Bocce Club. To celebrate the raising of the timbers, the Senior Sing! Program gathered around the structure to sing God Bless America in celebration of this project! Designed by the Rosen Group of Summit and built by Lapp Structures of New Holland, PA; the pavilion was partly funded through the Union County Open Space Trust Fund Grant Program for 2010 and 2011. The Union County Open Space Fund matched Summit funding for the project.

Once located at the Village Green near Summit Avenue, the court was moved to the rear of the Summit Community Center to place it more convenient to other senior programs. The former location was also problematic, as young children from the nearby Mabie Playground would often dig holes in the bocce court. Frustrated by the heavy maintenance and a decline in membership, the court was moved to 100 Morris Avenue and the program erupted. In 2011, the Summit Seniors Bocce Club challenged Overlook Medical Center’s Community Health Division in the Macaroni Open. Public Health Nurses and other staff from Overlook Medical Center, learned the game of bocce, competed in a tournament and enjoyed a macaroni lunch, courtesy of Overlook Medical Center.

This full sized, protected and regulation court can now host bocce programs from the region. The Summit Senior Bocce Club looks forward to challenging area teams now that they can host the tournaments. A fundraising campaign is being formulated to help to purchase benches and landscape the area. An official celebration will follow in May. The game of bocce, often associated with the Italian culture is popular worldwide.

Now that the court is complete, residents of Summit and neighbors to the Summit Community Center at 100 Morris Avenue are all welcome to play on the court. The Summit Senior Bocce Club looks forward to offering lessons and working with teens and special needs children who also call the Summit Community Center their home. Eric McFerran, Chairman of the Bocce Club proudly said” this is a great day!” as he watched each timber being erected.

For information about the Summit Senior Bocce Club or other programs for Summit residents of all ages, check out www.cityofsummit.org or call 908-277-2932.

A Common Problem

"Hi Mario, my name is Jack Grant and I run the Couples Bocce League at the Medford Boat Club. We decided last year to award the championship team with Charles River Apparel Windjackets and I am in the process of ordering these jackets. Charles River has a library of stock logos for baseball, basketball, etc, but unfortunately did not have one for bocce. The website did allow you to upload your own logo, and I was hoping you could forward me a PDF file of a stock bocce logo that I could use for the jackets. I will then add the MBC championship embroidery to complete the design. Any help you could provide on this matter will be appreciated. Thanks again for your help."

{This is a pretty common problem for people who want to give awards with a bocce logo but don't have one that's designed especially for them. If you look on-line for stock logos you might find some in the public domain and others that are not. Quite often people find images for lawn bowls or petanque and use them, not knowing the difference. Once at a tournament awards ceremony I noticed that the tourney director handed out medals with an image of lawn bowls players and no one seemed to know the difference.

So, to solve this problem you could have a graphic artist design a personalized logo for your group (this is a great option - and a one-time expense), or use a stock image in the public domain, or try to get permission from someone who owns a nifty image. I offered Jack permission to use The Joy of Bocce image for his jackets.}

Photos of the week
This week's photos were submitted by Robert Battaile who told us a couple of issues ago about GOCCE.

Battaile says "The first game of Gocce™ was played with my family members in Victoria, TX on January 9, 2012 at Putt-Putt Golf.

On Sunday April 1st, I proposed my Public Art Project - 'Gulliver's Golf and Gocce™' to an enthusiastic St. Helena City Council and Town Hall audience. It's miniature golf played on a scale-model replica of Napa Valley. Also, the 'fairways' are widened for my new invention of 'Gocce' – bocce played on a miniature golf course!

http://www.calexas.com/rounds/golf.html

I've been encouraged by some of my bocce teammates that the City property by the Library is a great spot. It has been vacant since I first was developing this concept in 2006. It could be a great activity and fundraiser for the City. Maybe they lease the land to us for $1 per year for five years? And, get around 80% of the revenue in return.

Only in the last couple of months have I learned how to fund this piece of 'interactive Public Art.'

We'll fund it using kickstarter, a 'crowd funding' website which is what we're doing with 'MER-ZIN' ~ our interactive wine-tasting show for Napa. People 'donate' a few bucks to creative projects and get rewards. As little as one dollar. We're trying to raise $58,000. You help us get it created and then you come and enjoy it. Save money on Advance Tickets, for instance. Please look at

http://www.tinyurl.com/mer-zin-napa

Maybe some of your readers have creative bocce projects that could benefit from this funding mechanism?"

{Sounds pretty interesting. Contact Gocce Expert Robert Battaile @ battaile@calexas.com for more info.}

Bocce product of the week
Bocce Court Maintenance Tools

I’ve seen all kinds of home-made court maintenance brushes and scrapers. Two things have always struck me about them. 1 – they look like they are home-made and 2 – they tend to be HEAVY.

7' Drag Brush

Manufactured by Lee Tennis (makers of the Har-Tru surface material), this court maintenance tool created for tennis courts works exceptionally well for bocce courts. The 7-foot drag brush is light-weight and, even if you have a 13- or 14-foot wide court, you can smooth it over with just two passes. This is quick enough to do between games without keeping players waiting very long.

Bristles are 4 ½ inches of synthetic fibers and the strong but light-weight frame is aluminum. Retails for $189.95 plus shipping.

Lute/scarifier

This strangely named 30” wide device is actually two implements in one. It is an all-aluminum combination tool for scarifying, leveling, and removing loose court material.

Strong and sturdy, the tool is light enough to handle with ease and is excellent for spreading new material during top-dressing. The concave shape of the 30” wide blade allows the tool to “float” along the surface without digging in. Use the serrated edge to scrape material from high spots, then flip the tool over to rake and smooth that spot and drag the loose material to fill in a lower point. Retails for $69.95 plus shipping.

Besides a heavy roller, the lute/scarifier and 7-foot drag brush should be all the maintenance tools a bocce court owner needs.
