Hello bocce faithful,

Monday, May 7 starts our local outdoor bocce season. We meet at about 9:15 AM, have coffee and pastry and play bocce. We move from court to court seeking out venues within a short drive. Players show up any day that they are available and we keep this going all summer and into early fall. Life is good!

Yes, we are still eagerly awaiting the crew to break ground for our new Sons of Italy which will house four international bocce courts. Can't wait!

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Eileen Strangfeld writes...

"My husband and I first started playing bocce on a Friday night league in Martinez, California. We are not very good, but we do understand the rules and loved the socializing it brought to our lives. We have moved around a great deal in the last ten years and have finally settled in a small city outside of Modesto, California. We would love to pick up the sport again but we are not heavily into competition. We would just like to meet people at a place on Friday evenings (or any other evening during the week) to play the game and have some fun. Is there any way you can help me? Or, maybe you can suggest where I might look for assistance."

{Can any reader in that area respond? If so, REPLY and I will get the word to them.}

Perfetta Club Pro set of 4 red, 4 green, pallino, carry bag...

Photos of the week
This week's photos were submitted by Mike Constantini who says "I designed and had built new portable bocce courts for this year's winter league. I used ¾" plywood and metal studs to keep the weight down and the side rails true and straight. The length of each member is 12' long and the width of the courts are 9'.

The courts can be built to a number of different lengths from 60' to 84'. They are spliced together using the metal studs and a 3" male extension of the studs to female end connection built into the plywood.

This design assured true and straight members that were light weight and would never warp over time.

The dimensions were - Side Rails: 4-1/2" high x 7" wide x 12'-0" long. Each side rail had a female end built out of the plywood and a male end that had the metal stud extend beyond the plywood by 3". This assured a simple slip joint that was easy to install. The end boards were 7" wide and 6" high and incorporated the same slip joint details that worked with the side rails. These conditions also had an additional pin inserted to absorb the blows from raffa shots etc. We made enough side rails to facilitate two courts that could be built from 60' to 72' long depending on the size of our facility. The courts were 9'-0" wide. The size of the carpet for each court dictated the overall length and width of the courts because of the weight of the carpet rolls. We had to pick up the courts each night, so two special carts were designed to hold the carpet roll and side boards for each court.

I thought you may want to show them (photos) in your news letter."

{These courts look pretty solid so that balls banked off the side boards might rebound instead of hug - that's a good thing for Open Rules Bocce.

Still, the set-up and breakdown of the courts can be a pain, but we do what we have to do to enjoy our game.}

Bocce product of the week
Bocce Court Maintenance Tools

I’ve seen all kinds of home-made court maintenance brushes and scrapers. Two things have always struck me about them. 1 – they look like they are home-made and 2 – they tend to be HEAVY.

7' Drag Brush

Manufactured by Lee Tennis (makers of the Har-Tru surface material), this court maintenance tool created for tennis courts works exceptionally well for bocce courts. The 7-foot drag brush is light-weight and, even if you have a 13- or 14-foot wide court, you can smooth it over with just two passes. This is quick enough to do between games without keeping players waiting very long.

Bristles are 4 ½ inches of synthetic fibers and the strong but light-weight frame is aluminum. Retails for $189.95 plus shipping.

Lute/scarifier

This strangely named 30” wide device is actually two implements in one. It is an all-aluminum combination tool for scarifying, leveling, and removing loose court material.

Strong and sturdy, the tool is light enough to handle with ease and is excellent for spreading new material during top-dressing. The concave shape of the 30” wide blade allows the tool to “float” along the surface without digging in. Use the serrated edge to scrape material from high spots, then flip the tool over to rake and smooth that spot and drag the loose material to fill in a lower point. Retails for $69.95 plus shipping.

Besides a heavy roller, the lute/scarifier and 7-foot drag brush should be all the maintenance tools a bocce court owner needs.

Polished Set of Two Squarehead Nailed Boules
I've put these beautiful boules up on eBay. They are pretty neat and are numbered 10 & 12. They weigh almost exactly the same - one is 1151 g and the other is 1154. They seem pretty close to the international standard of 107 mm too.

Own a piece or two of our game's history. Make for great conversation pieces.
