Hello again bocce faithful readers,

This weekend we sent three teams to the Boston Senior Games bocce tournament which was held at the Steriti Memorial Ice Rink because of inclement weather. They have two nice indoor courts there and it was a good day of bocce despite the weather.

Still no word on breaking ground for our new Sons of Italy lodge. We hope it will be ready to open in September or October...just in time to move indoors for bocce.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Joe Plouff writes...

"Hello Mario (Mr. Bocce). Your weekly Ezine is fantastic. I would never have believed the number of Bocce Tournaments taking place in this country. If you can spare a minute I have a question.

I live in Littleton, CO for 6 months and Naples, FL for the other 6. We head home May 15th. I learned to play Bocce here and love the game. We are playing on a Har-Tru court, our teams play for 3 months (Jan-Feb-Mar) the other 9 months it just sits there. Not good for Har-Tru. I followed an article that you had on your web site about a year ago. A gentleman in Franklin, MA was building a big court like 12 X 75 ft in his backyard. You followed with Photos on your web. The big issue here is the gentleman used crusher fines (crushed sandstone, crushed marble). Again my question is do you know of this type of court in the Naples area or the Littleton CO area. If I am going to replace the Har-Tru with crusher fines. I really need to see and feel the real thing.
And I thought If anyone knows what's around for Bocce Courts, it would be you.

I was born and raised in Mass, lived there for 30 years. If Franklin is your choice maybe I'll come home to visit Family and Friends.

Any thing you can do would be more than appreciated.
Good luck with your up and coming tournaments.
Yes I have your book 6 copies (I bought for friends I play with).

{Joe, it's really a matter of preference. I have Har-Tru in my back yard, but others like stone dust or other top dressings. I guess you might try playing on different surfaces and see which one you like best.

First off you might want to check around both states and see what kind of court surfaces are popular. Playing on the ones you like the best might be a good idea. Sometimes materials are indigenous to one part of the country and these might be just the thing for your top dressing. People use crushed limestone around the East quite a bit. Har-Tru is pretty popular too. Good luck and let us know what you decide on.}

Perfetta Club Pro set of 4 red, 4 green, pallino, carry bag...

Photos of the week
This week's photos were submitted by Joe Kalil. You'll have to scroll down past some previous year's senior games photos to see this week's pictures.

We sent 3 teams to the Boston Senior Games which were held in the Steriti Memorial Ice Rink due to inclement weather. Boston Mayor Menino somehow picks up the tab for the day with refreshments and lunch served and medals for the Gold, Silver, and Bronze finishers.

Lots of seniors show up - hey - it's free! The fellows that put the event on do a nice job, trying to keep it fun for all the participants.

A couple of interesting things happened during the day. During one match we were ahead 6 to 4 and the other team rolled the pallino out, then picked up the wrong color ball (green instead of red) and rolled it about 11 feet from the pallino. I then took the correct color ball (red) and was about to replace the green ball when an opponent from the other team tossed the pallino and the first ball back so we could start the frame over. Of course, the guys who run the event are not used to officiating and just allowed the frame to start over, which really gave the opposing team an advantage since the first roll was pretty bad. We lost that game 9 - 8 and missed our chance at the finals. In officiating, you need a take charge kind of person to administer the rules properly. Some call it field presence, demeanor, or just a confident, experienced attitude. Some are good at it, others not so much.

In Boston and some other areas, they play the backboard live and there are no swingboards. Sometimes, when the pallino is four or five feet from the back wall, a player will toss the ball off the backboard and let it carom back to the pallino. The ones who play on these courts do this all the time - a kind of home court advantage. At one point we were trying to finesse a ball close to the target about 5 feet from the end board and couldn't quite get one close enough. Sure enough, the opponents who were locals, fired a couple balls off the backboard and picked up some easy points on us. Hey, we live and learn. Some argue that this kind of play employs a different kind of skill set. Others like keeping the backboard dead unless a ball hits a ball or the pallino. You make the call. Still, we play any way the home team wants us to. Just so long as they let us play!

Bocce product of the week
Bocce Court Maintenance Tools

I’ve seen all kinds of home-made court maintenance brushes and scrapers. Two things have always struck me about them. 1 – they look like they are home-made and 2 – they tend to be HEAVY.

7' Drag Brush

Manufactured by Lee Tennis (makers of the Har-Tru surface material), this court maintenance tool created for tennis courts works exceptionally well for bocce courts. The 7-foot drag brush is light-weight and, even if you have a 13- or 14-foot wide court, you can smooth it over with just two passes. This is quick enough to do between games without keeping players waiting very long.

Bristles are 4 ˝ inches of synthetic fibers and the strong but light-weight frame is aluminum. Retails for $189.95 plus shipping.

Lute/scarifier

This strangely named 30” wide device is actually two implements in one. It is an all-aluminum combination tool for scarifying, leveling, and removing loose court material.

Strong and sturdy, the tool is light enough to handle with ease and is excellent for spreading new material during top-dressing. The concave shape of the 30” wide blade allows the tool to “float” along the surface without digging in. Use the serrated edge to scrape material from high spots, then flip the tool over to rake and smooth that spot and drag the loose material to fill in a lower point. Retails for $69.95 plus shipping.

Besides a heavy roller, the lute/scarifier and 7-foot drag brush should be all the maintenance tools a bocce court owner needs.
