Faithful readers,

The scuttlebutt hereabouts is that this week we will break ground for our new Sons of Italy building that we hope will be finished by September or October. I'll keep you posted. We're excited because we hope to have four international courts with polyurethane surfaces. Heck, we'll be the first in the East to have such courts. My plan is to play in every league until I learn how to point on those lightning fast surfaces.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Brad Cotton and others sent info about where to play bocce near Modesto, CA.

Stockton Waterloo Gun and Bocci Club
4343 N. Ashley Lane
Stockton, Ca. 95215
Contact: David Canclini, canclini@gotnet.net
Details: Every Friday 6:30 P.M. dinner and bocce, $7. Everyone welcome. Four courts inside. Open every day except Mondays

They could check this out. Modesto is a short drive to Stockton. They randomly pick teams and play. It's fun.

This from another reader...

"If they want to learn Raffa there is a Friday league in Stockton on Friday nights that they may be able to hook up with. Or on Wednesday nights there is drop in open bocce, with dinner in between sessions. Great folks and nice indoor courts. Have them check with Ron Jacobs for more info."

Eileen wrote that...

"We did hook up with Ron and JoAnn Jacobs for Wednesday night supper and bocce at the Italian American Club. So, we may be also interested in speaking with David from the Waterloo Gun and Bocce Club. Thanks for the tip."

Chris Angelich writes...

"I have looked over the choices for various bocce ball sets and my question is: What if I wanted bocce balls (just one set of four) to be made with a special design......such as my alma mater: USC Trojans......is this possible? Costs?"

{I thought that Bede Kortegast at Playaboule could help but his answer was...

"The only low cost option is laser engraving. To have something embedded in the ball as a logo only makes cost and production sense if there are several hundred sets ordered."

{Makes sense. Maybe someday technology will improve and this may become possible and affordable.}

Got an interesting email from Doris...

"Good morning, Mario,

I'm from the office of New York State Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera. We've just gotten a bocce ball court in our district and are interested in finding a partner with whom we can host a tournament.

Your expertise led us to you. Would you be available to speak about this?"

{Hey, I might be headed to the Bronx. When I played baseball in college my coach was NY Yankee pitcher Art Ditmar. He was always kind enough to get me tickets for the Yankees or the Mets games. Wouldn't mind seeing the new Yankee Stadium this time around.}

Marie Bedard writes...

"Want to let you know that your newsletter is passed on to Special Olympics Coaches and programs.

Also the Special Olympics 2014 USA Summer National Games will be in New Jersey, in July. If there are clubs interested in volunteering the applications will be out, just keep a lookout for the upcoming news."

National Bocce Day 2011 honoring our late friend Bill Hadley...

Perfetta Club Pro set of 4 red, 4 green, pallino, carry bag...

Photos of the week
This week's photos were submitted by Southwestern Pennsylvania's Vince Vaccaro who writes...

Hello again,

Vince & Charlotte Vaccaro from South West Pennsylvania with updated photos and happenings on our backyard bocce court. Featured as the ‘photo’s of the week’ in the back issue dated March 23, 2009, Whose Point – II.

Here it is 3 years later and the fun never stops when it comes to playing bocce in the backyard. (Well, it does stop when late fall and winter sets in but the time off sets the stage for spring bocce.)

We opened Monday evening May 7th. Our turnout was great, 20 guys and about 10 children. We play every other Monday and it is ‘guy’s night’ only women are the kids but we do a couple affairs during the warmer weather we dubbed ‘family bocce’ as well as an event around the end of October we named ‘BocceWeen’ to coincide with ‘Halloween’. This year will be our 3rd annual ‘BocceWeen’.

Back to ‘Monday Night Bocce’. Last year we had a low of 14 guys and a high of 28. Monday nights consist of eating, drinking, having Dean singing in the background and playing bocce. We pick teams as we go. (There is one team that plays together and wins quite frequently). It has come to the point no matter who is playing this team the other team is the one everyone else is cheering for. Our matches are to ‘7’. We want to get in as many games as possible. We tried ‘9’ but some games took too long and there were less matches played so everyone is OK with ‘7’. Even a tight match to ‘7’ will take time.

The pictures attached are of opening night and from last year's bocce times. We enjoy the fact the young children are wanting to play and are learning the game. In fact one 8 year old attended a Holy Name Breakfast Meeting in early April with his grandfather and when the President of the Holy Name finished up (the president and grandfather are also ‘guys nite bocce’ players) and asked if there were any questions or suggestions, the 8 year old, Domenick, raised his hand and asked “when does bocce start?”

Our grandson (4) when he was 3 was asked ‘how do you throw a bocce ball?’ would retort, “you don’t throw it, you ROLL it”.

We play all summer long, usually Sunday evening with family, Monday nite bocce and when we have time with other friends and family. That’s about all for this update. Will send some photo’s and updates when we have BocceWeen again.

{Great shots and a great update. Follow Vince's lead and send photos of your bocce play.}
