Hello all you faithful readers,

The builders are hard at work on our new Sons of Italy building which will house four international courts with polyurethane surfaces. I've made it my goal to play in every league until I learn how to point on those lightning fast playing surfaces. We hope the structure will be ready by the Fall of 2012. All of us who love bocce are hoping that we'll get those polyurethane courts - we would be the only ones in the East to have such courts.

Also, check out the new scoreboards under Bocce product of the week. Finally, if you are local and want to host a corporate outing in the North End of Boston we can accommodate you. We're smack in the middle of the bocce corporate outing season and Boston is fabulous!

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

This from Wayne Farinacci, Tournament Director of

The Marshall Superstore Cleveland International Challenge Cup of Bocce

"Bocce Lovers,

This year there are several new additions to the Marshall Superstore Cleveland International Challenge Cup of Bocce tournament. The City of Mayfield Heights and Club Molisani have partnered to complete a Bocce Court Renovation Project. The City purchased over 11 tons of Har Tru and Club Molisani provided the manpower to completely renovate our eight bocce courts. The courts have been playing extremely well as the surface has become hard and fast. We couldn't be happier with the outcome. All the backboards and hardware have been replaced also, essentially creating eight new and fast courts. Many thanks to Mayor Greg Costabile and Service Director Andy Fornaro for their effort on this project.

This year the Marshall Superstore Cleveland International Challenge Cup of Bocce is also proud to become the largest bocce tournament in the United States using USBF Bocce Rules. Gabe Quattrocchi, Vice President of the USBF Eastern Sector, informed Club Molisani of this honor. So if you are excited about playing bocce according to the preferred direction of the major bocce aficionados in the country, you won't want to miss this opportunity.

Club Molisani will also sponsor a Wine & Cheese Welcome Party for all out of state bocce teams. Once you register, you will receive additional information about this by-invitation-only event.

Club Molisani is looking forward to your participation in the Marshall Superstore Cleveland International Challenge Cup of Bocce this year. Please print and help distribute the attached forms. The Mayfield Holiday Inn is once again the host hotel and restaurant (Alfredo's at the Inn) for this year’s tournament. You can print the Program Ad form if you are interested in advertising in our tournament program. Please get your application mailed ASAP. "

Elizabeth Jade Wong Fontana keeps us supplied with great video links...

She writes...

"Ciao Tutti,

I am excited about Michael Varni's new bocce court at EVVIVA'S. His restaurant on the MIRACLE MILE in Stockton. Of course, I have been pushing him for years to open to do it, and voila!

When he puts in a 2nd court, I will organize & sponsor a pro-am Open tournament. The 40 ft. court may be on the small side but it is still fun & challenging to play on. From the south end the balls pull to the left. Good players make the adjustment. I've played 5 games, and lost only 1. Call Mike 209-607-9658 for more info.

Vern Cooper writes...

"The July edition is finally out… three days late. My bad. A week in 100 degree heat in New Orleans last week had a way of dulling the senses. I wanted to go to the New Orleans Greater Bocce Club and then write about it, but the heat made me change my plans. Now I’m back in the Central California cold and my blood is pumping and I’m thinkin’ “Dang. I shoulda played bocce down there.”

The big story this month is the Nationals. Needless to say, we did good. Great is more like it. Our California women went to the Nationals and played their type of bocce. To quote Charlie Sheen; “Winning!” Congrats, girls. Our men players brought a few pieces of metal home themselves. Congrats to all our players, men and women alike.

We played at Sutter Creek again. It was the 131st edition of the Italian Benevolent Society Picnic, and the 15th Annual Open Bocce Tournament. If you’ve never made it to that event, you’re missing out on a lot of fun. A tournament with carnival rides, live music, bingo, food booths and Bocce-4-a-Buck the day before the tournament. Rick Wagstaff knows how to do a June weekend.

From the Northwest corner of the sector, Greg Singleton writes about the Northwest Senior Games. Chuck Just shares photos of the court he has in his backyard. I’m almost ready to invite myself up to Bainbridge Island just to play in one of the most beautiful settings you can imagine. How ‘bout it Chuck? Got a spare room I can stay in for a few days?

And of course we have Western Sector Championship tournaments for both Raffa and Open Rules. All in all, a fun packed month.

Sit back (if it’s possible to sit back at your computer) and read about all the fun we had this month. And then check out page 20 to read about all the fun coming up for July and beyond.

Perfetta Club Pro set of 4 red, 4 green, pallino, carry bag...

Photos of the week
This week's photos were taken by local bocce aficionado Joe Quartarone of BayColonyWineCellars.com. They show off the Taylor Farms Bocce Tourney which was a Salem, New Hampshire neighborhood event using two courts and golf carts to move the teams to their proper bocce venue.

The event was put on by Ralph Bagarella, the most gracious of hosts (and a pretty good bocce player too!). Good food, good competition, and a great time for all of us lucky enough to attend.

NEW - JOY OF BOCCE SCOREBOARD

Hot off the press - I had these made for the Providence Tourney (that "the powers that be" cancelled way too early to get teams). I only had 15 made so I thought I'd try to see if anyone in the readership might like them.

There are only 3 pieces - the stand, the scoreboard, and two small screws to attach by hand (OK - maybe that makes 4 pieces). No tools needed.

Check out the photos and let me know what you think. The scoreboard is placed at half court and can be seen from both sides of the court. It's laminated and will hold up well outdoors. We've gone through several tries at this type of scoreboard and this is the best one yet. I think you are gonna like it. Check out the photos - sells for $159.95 plus $30 shipping from the UPS Store. For more than one shoot me an email (Mario@JoyofBocce.com).
