Hello again bocce gang,

I hope many of you have passed along the info about the Rhode Island tourney in April. It is always difficult getting a program running in its first year and I hope we can get this one off the ground with your help. Please forward the ezine and the pdf to any club, individual or league that you know of. Many thanks for your help.

I need to get hustling on the Providence Tourney and will get a large "snail mailing" out to as many players as possible. If you can help get the word out to teams, individuals, clubs, etc. please do so. I think it would be great to have a big money tourney in the East each April.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Our local newspaper (The Eagle-Tribune) sent a crew of sportswriters to the Super Bowl and Bill Burt interviewed Super Celebrity of the Day Steve Mariucci about the game. They end up talking Bocce and the Joy of Bocce.

Former USBF President John Ross writes with great info on George Farruggio's question...

John Ross writes...

"The USBF open rules have an answer to George Farruggio's question about kicking the balls away before the frame is over. There is also a rule about what happens when a player is hit by a ball.

Calling the frame dead is not an option because it gives an unfair advantage to the team without the point. Just kick it, end it, and start over? Not in our games!

The two rules are included below, reproduced from page 14 in the printed program for the 2011 Nationals. They can also be found at http://www.bocce.com ."

MOVEMENT OF BALLS OR PALLINO

Players should never touch or move any ball or pallino until the frame has ended. If a player moves a ball prior to the end of a frame (thinking play is over) and the balls cannot be accurately relocated to their positions, all remaining non-thrown balls of the non-offending team are counted as points. If the playing team commits the offense, all non-thrown balls of that team are voided and the frame is over.

BALL OR PALLINO STRIKING A PLAYER

If a player is in the court standing behind the point balls and pallino (In harm's way or “downstream”) and is struck by a ball or pallino as a result of a raffa or volo shot, the opposite team has the Rule of Advantage. They can: 1) Leave all balls and pallino in the new configuration. 2) Remove the ball or pallino that struck their opponent from the court. If the pallino is removed from from the court the frame is over and play begins from the opposite end. 3) They can place the ball or pallino that struck their opponent anywhere on the court.

If a player is standing in front of the point or pallino (Out of harm's way or “upstream”) and is struck by a ball that moves backwards toward the player as a result of a raffa or volo shot, the ball remains in play because the player was in a valid location. If the pallino moves backward and strikes a player, the frame is over and play begins from the opposite end. If a player is struck by a ball or pallino in a point attempt or lag, the Rule of Advantage applies no matter where the player was standing.

PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND MONEY TOURNEY SET

We've got the details set for the Providence Money Tourney. Click below for a pdf. And please forward to anyone you know who might be interested.

We're going to need lots of help getting the word out, so if you can see your way to forwarding the pdf to any person, team, or club that might want to send a team(s), that would help out a great deal. I hope this can go viral for a while and we can get a decent field so that the Dunkin Donuts Center will agree to perhaps make this an annual April event.

The Providence Tourney is set for April 28 & 29, 2012. This will be for four-player teams which can be made up of male, female, or co-ed teams. For our first year, we want to keep things as simple as possible. Next year - who knows?

We'll follow the format of the other large money tourneys like The World Series of Bocce and others who play four players who roll one ball each and play both ends of the court.

For locals and those within driving distance, the entry fee is $200 per team or $50 per person. Kayla Beauvais is the Dunkin Donuts Event Coordinator and she has done a great job of securing reasonable hotel rates for those traveling. She can be reached at 401-331-0700 ext 7126 or kbeauvais@dunkindonutscenter.com (or see pdf).

On Friday, April 27th there will be a charity tournament for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Providence. Contact Kayla if you want to participate (and get a "leg up" on the competition). However, that event will run from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM followed by a dinner for the participants. I think that, if you came in on Friday we could probably arrange for you to play on the courts from say, 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM or so. More details to follow.

There will be shuttles to a nearby casino throughout the day and we will get that info and more to you ASAP.

We could use the "snail mail" addresses of bocce clubs who might be interested in the event. Please shoot me an email if you can provide the info. Also, we need to get the word to the locals in the Providence area. Can anyone help with that? Please REPLY.

Lots of people chimed in on the growth of bocce in their respective areas. I know that in Northeast Massachusetts we have seen unprecedented growth from 5 years ago and just as big an increase from 5 years before that.

Bill Kintana of the Martinez Bocce Federation wrote...

"In reply to most popular sports categories, I can only report from my own local experience. Last year, as in every month of March, The local little league and organized baseball here in Martinez, holds their annual Opening day baseball parade. in 2011 some 1200-1300 players , coaches, etc., marched down our Main Street, all dressed in their respective uniforms. During the same season also last year (2011) our Martinez Bocce Federation fielded a total of some 1,835 player/members, not to mention, some 275 players during the morning senior leagues as well. I rest my case here."

{Lots of readers wrote to say pretty much the same thing. It may not be the most popular sport on the planet, but our game is growing.}

Photos of the week
This week's photos were submitted by Bob Sileo of Coral Springs, Florida. Bob writes...

"The Teton Nation Adventure Guides of North Broward County, Florida conducted its second annual Swamp Buggy Father-Son Bocce tournament in late January.

The tournament attracted 23 father-son teams, with many of the participants playing bocce for the first time.

Brandon and Sean Callahan took first place and brought home the trophy.

The goal of the Adventure Guides program is to create opportunities for fathers and sons to spend quality time together in activities that will build strong bonds between parent and child, and create lasting memories that will ensure you remain Pals Forever."

{Please follow Bob' s excellent lead and send photos from your bocce experiences.}
