Hello again bocce gang,

Strangely enough, we have had almost no snow here in Massachusetts for the month of February. But, one looks like it's headed our way for March 1st. Still, March signals a kind of "turning the corner" on our bocce season. We'll finish up our indoor leagues and get ready to play outdoors in six weeks or so.

Two events are on the immediate horizon for us in the East. We're gearing up for the Massachusetts Senior Games Bocce tournament on March 31, 2012 in Methuen, Mass. If you are in our "neighborhood" come play a little bocce with us. Bragging Rights as Mass. State Champs are on the line! See details under Bocce news and Tourney update below.

The other event is the Providence Tourney in April. Thanks to all of you who have passed the info on to players in your area. Team reps are calling and emailing and registrations are showing up so I'm hoping we'll have a decent field of teams to host a very successful event.

Again - Please forward the ezine and the pdf to any club, individual or league that you know of who might want to compete. Many thanks.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Brad Droy of http://www.outsideingames.com sends this...

"I noticed in your newsletter the Massachusetts Senior Bocce Tourney coming up March 31st. Would you like me to send you some mini Indoor BoHo Bocce booklets for people interested in playing with lighter weight solid wool felted balls like my game? I thought some people with arthritis problems may like the lighter weight balls."

SENIOR GAMES BOCCE ON TAP IN MARCH ON BOTH COASTS

We'll be hosting the Mass. Senior Games Bocce Tourney on March 31, 2012. Send an email to Mario@JoyofBocce.com if you'd like me to "snail mail" or email you a flyer.

Don't forget - bragging rights for the state of Massachusetts are on the line!

On the West Coast the Senior Games are slated for March 11 - 17, 2012 at the Campo di Bocce of Livermore, California. They'll host an Open tourney for Men and Women and also a Doubles event for Men and another for Women.

{We need to get Bocce considered a National Sport, one where you qualify in your state games one year and compete at the Nationals the following year. It seems like a no-brainer that, even though younger and younger players are taking up the sport, bocce fits the bill as a National Senior Game.}

Larry Nordgaard of Allen, Texas writes...

"I am a Special Olympics bocce coach. Do any of the tournaments you talk about have a special needs category that I might bring my athletes to? We only get to compete one time a year in October at the Special Olympics Texas Fall Classic. Our delegation has a volleyball team that goes to national competitions annually and I would like to see if there are any bocce tournaments that my athletes might attend."

PROVIDENCE TOURNEY SHAPING UP!

Teams are starting to stop the procrastination phase and are getting their registrations in in to the Dunkin Donuts Center.

No need to procrastinate - let's get your entry in and get the field set up for a great tourney in a great city.

Click below for a pdf. And please forward to anyone you know who might be interested.

The Providence Tourney is set for April 28 & 29, 2012. This will be for four-player teams which can be made up of male, female, or co-ed teams.

For locals and those within driving distance, the entry fee is $200 per team or $50 per person. Kayla Beauvais is the Dunkin Donuts Event Coordinator and she has done a great job of securing great hotel rates for those traveling. She can be reached at 401-331-0700 ext 7126 or kbeauvais@dunkindonutscenter.com (or see pdf).

On Friday, April 27th there will be a charity tournament for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Providence. Contact Kayla if you want to participate (and get a "leg up" on the competition). However, that event will run from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM followed by a dinner for the participants. I think that, if you came in on Friday we could probably arrange for you to play on the courts from say, 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM or so. More details to follow.

There will be shuttles to a nearby casino throughout the day and we will get that info and more to you ASAP.

We could use the "snail mail" addresses of bocce clubs who might be interested in the event. Please shoot me an email if you can provide the info. Also, we need to get the word to the locals in the Providence area. Can anyone help with that? Please REPLY.

Photos of the week
This week's photos were taken by yours truly with my iPhone on a recent trip to Providence to meet with the good people at the Dunkin Donuts Center (we're running a money tourney there April 28 & 29 of 2012).

The two courts are in the public domain and are lighted and very close to some great restaurants in the Federal Hill section of Providence, Rhode Island. The courts are in a kind of V formation and there is seating available. Looks like a great place to hang out in the good weather!
