BIG DOINGS IN METHUEN FOR BOCCE STRONG MARATHON

BOCCE STRONG EVENT FOR MARATHON

We hope to generate a great deal of money for this event!

July 19, 20, & 21

July 19 - qualifying plus a 5 course dinner wine and dance at $75

July 20 - Event & Lunch/Dinner

July 21 - Sunday Morning Champagne Brunch $25

(this from Jim Tsouprakakis)

Hi Melissa,

We spoke briefly Thursday morning at the Seniors bocce tournament about a planned bocce fund raising tournament to support the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.

My name is Jim Tsouprakakis and I help organize bocce for the Sons of Italy. The Methuen Sons of Italy has graciously donated their new 3 million dollar facility for the weekend tournament on July 19th, 20th & 21st.

Our goal is to have at least 50 plus teams participating from the bocce community across the country and many other fund raising activities throughout the weekend.

We would love to have Mayor Menino participate as the the guest of honor for this worthy cause.

Please forward this memo to your Commissioner or the appropriate person to get on the Mayor's calendar.

Regards,
Jim Tsouprakakis

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls

The June edition of the USBF Western Sector Newsletter is here. We have some good things in this issue.

Counting mine, there are three responses to Vern’s call for comments on the possibility of separating Open and PRV at the Nationals. I won’t tell you what my position is, but I did title my response after that old Al Green song remade famous by President Obama last year.

We also have a nice photo spread of all the winners of the 2013 Bay Area Senior Games, preceded by a nice article by Jerry South.

So dig right in. I gotta run… going up to Sutter Creek for the Italian Benevolent Society’s 132 Annual Italian Picnic and Bocce Tournament. I’ll tell ya about it next month!

Ciao
Frank

FROM PLAYABOULE.COM

"We just got in some steel pallinas.

These are chrome plated and weigh 10 oz. So twice the weight of a standard phenolic/plastic type.

We had asked that the manufacturer make them to 50 mm (2") but they arrived as 52 mm. Hopefully that 2 mm won't make a difference.

Over the last few years we have had a lot of requests for a heavier pallina but at a better price than a 2" ball bearing.

http://www.playaboule.com/52mm_chrome_steel_pallina.aspx?affid=pagnoni01

We hope that these will satisfy the player demand for a lower cost product that is heavy and won't fly off the court when struck. Not too heavy like a solid ball bearing that moves sluggishly when hit.

All the best,"

Bede

GREAT LETTER FROM A READER...

Dear Mr. Pagnoni,

I just wanted to 'Thank You' for all you do for the sport of Bocce. I just finished reading your book and it was very informative, supportive and inspiring to this new Bocce Player.

Three years ago, I broke my back and although I can still walk and get around - I do so in pain. My days of hiking, biking and nature photography have been greatly reduced to short excursions. While sitting around depressed one day, I was trying to think of something enjoyable for my wife, friends and family to do when we get together. Being physically limited from many things, I thought back to my school days and remembered a teacher bringing a Bocce set to class and taking us out for a game behind the school. I thought how the physical part would be easy enough for me and the game itself would be enjoyable for everyone. Long story short, we play in the yard almost every day (there aren't many courts here in the Mid-Alabama area). But everyone that has come over and tried it - loves it. It gets me outside again and has been very therapeutic both physically and mentally.

I have enjoyed it so much, now I'm trying to come up with a way to get the city to help build courts in a park and get the schools involved. I have no space for a court or I would build one just to get a league started and the exposure it would bring. But I really feel, after reading your book, that this is something that school kids, the elderly, both men and women in this area would really benefit from. We have about nine months of acceptable weather for Bocce here and maybe this will help others the way it has helped me.

Once again, 'Thank You' for your support and and your knowledge on the wonderful game of Bocce.

Sincerely yours,
Tim Farner

(Thanks Tim. I used to run an intramural bocce get-together with the high school kids when I was teaching. It was great fun! Keep up the good work!}

Bocce product of the week
HEY - IT'S FATHER'S DAY!

Bocce Court Maintenance Tools

I’ve seen all kinds of home-made court maintenance brushes and scrapers. Two things have always struck me about them. 1 – they look like they are home-made and 2 – they tend to be HEAVY.

7' Drag Brush

Manufactured by Lee Tennis (makers of the Har-Tru surface material), this court maintenance tool created for tennis courts works exceptionally well for bocce courts. The 7-foot drag brush is light-weight and, even if you have a 13- or 14-foot wide court, you can smooth it over with just two passes. This is quick enough to do between games without keeping players waiting very long.

Bristles are 4 ˝ inches of synthetic fibers and the strong but light-weight frame is aluminum. Retails for $189.95 plus shipping.

Lute/scarifier

This strangely named 30” wide device is actually two implements in one. It is an all-aluminum combination tool for scarifying, leveling, and removing loose court material.

Strong and sturdy, the tool is light enough to handle with ease and is excellent for spreading new material during top-dressing. The concave shape of the 30” wide blade allows the tool to “float” along the surface without digging in. Use the serrated edge to scrape material from high spots, then flip the tool over to rake and smooth that spot and drag the loose material to fill in a lower point. Retails for $69.95 plus shipping.

Besides a heavy roller, the lute/scarifier and 7-foot drag brush should be all the maintenance tools a bocce court owner needs.

Photo of the week...
Here's a great photo of a home-made scoreboard for $80. Check it out! A three-player scoreboard for cut-throat games.

What a great looking scoreboard created by Adele Bagarella for Ted Shields - the Irish Bocce Player. The board definitely has an Irish bent to it. Cost = $80. The steel pegs go into the holes in the fence. A great design.

This from Wikipedia...

"The Claddagh's distinctive design features two hands clasping a heart, and usually surmounted by a crown. The elements of this symbol are often said to correspond to the qualities of love (the heart), friendship (the hands), and loyalty (the crown). A "Fenian" Claddagh ring, without a crown, is a slightly different take on the design. Claddagh rings, with or without the crown (most commonly with a crown), have come to denote pride in Irish heritage, while continuing to be symbols of love or marriage."
