Hello Bocce Fanatics!

Well, it looks like we have finally hired a chef and wait staff for our Sons of Italy Lodge #902. One last thing that we are doing is setting up tournament schedules for men, women, and mixed couples. We still are waiting for our liquor license and we also want to invite Pat Pezzin to help teach us how to referee Punto Raffa, Volo.

If you'd like to join a league or host a party or team building event etc., send us an email: Mario@JoyofBocce.com .

Don't forget to Log on to http://www.sonsofitalymethuen.com/ to register for league play or to book an outing or party.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Hello Bocce Players Everywhere

It’s here! What you’ve been waiting for. The newly revised 2013 Western Sector Schedule. The only revision to it is that Penn Valley has rescheduled their Italian Festa 4 Player Open and Italian Festa il Sacco tournaments to September 14th and 15th.

Good self-promoters that we are, before you get to the new schedule, you have to wade through 29 pages of all our other bocce related stuff. Good thing it’s all great bocce stuff. The only exception being the sad announcement of the passing of our friend Leno Freschet. What can you say about Leno? He was a great bocce player, a good friend to all, he had a wry sense of humor and he was a man we could all look up to as bocce mentor. We will all surely miss Leno.

A couple of months ago I reported on a project Patti Helm Bassett of the Marin Bocce Federation was working on. Well, she’s well on her way to seeing her project come to fruition, and she’s written a great report about it. You can’t miss her report; it’s on this month’s front page. Yeah, it’s that big a deal and I’m looking forward to taking part in it. I will add that this is Patti’s project and isn’t affiliated with the Marin Bocce Federation.

So enjoy the 2013 schedule. And don’t forget to read the other stuff, too.

Ciao
Frank

Luis sends news to bocce and pétanque players...

Hello Mario and Philippe:

Let me introduce myself and all of us. I have contacted both of you recently about Bocce (Mario Pagnoni) and Pétanque (Philippe Boets).

Mario: For the purpose of this email, Philippe Boets is the coordinator of a year event called “Pétanque America Open” and an expert in the Pétanque sport (at least, that is my perception).

Philippe: In the USA, Mario is an expert in the sport of Bocce (my perception as well).

Now that we know each other I will like to discuss with both of you what is the best approach to reach people in my community to be able to accomplish three main goals that I have:

1. Goal: Involvement:

a. How to involve 2 Elementary schools that I have in my community to get votes and interest in the game of Bocce and Pétanque.

b. How to involve American-Italians and American-French descendant and people in general resident in my community that maybe primary interested in the sport, and get their votes as well.

2. Goal: Construction:

a. How to convince my community to build a regulation size Bocce court in FishHawk Ranch neighborhood (where I live).

b. This Bocce court will be about 92 feet long by 13 feet wide with Har-Tru material on top.

c. The cost for the Bocce court will be $14,000. If I build 2 or more courts, will be more cost-effective than just build one.

d. This Bocce court will become a Bocce/Pétanque court because a court this big will have the appropriate markings to play both sports.

e. I do live in a community that is ruled by the CDD (Community Development Department) and a HOA. More likely, the CDD will be involve in the construction of the Bocce court.

3. Goal: Tournaments:

a. After the court is built: How to organize a Bocce and Pétanque tournament in my community?

So I am relying in your experience and asking for advice from both of you to get ideas of how to reach the goals.

For example:

Mario: Should I ask for a meeting with the Principal and the Physical Education teacher of each school to present my ideas to them? Or should I go through the PTA?

Philippe: How I should organize a Pétanque tournament at a “community scale”?

To both of you: what is the best approach to have votes toward the construction of a Bocce court?

Please feel free to call on me any time, and thank you so much for your respect and time involved in the discussion of this issue.

With sincerity and my best regards,
Luis.

{Wow! That's a lot to have on your plate right now. But I guess it would be a grass roots approach to getting things rolling. First off, let's see if anyone out there has some good ideas to get things going in the right direction. Then we can see what develops.}

Perfetta Club Pro set of 4 red, 4 green, pallino, carry bag...

Bocce product of the week
Bocce Court Maintenance Tools

I’ve seen all kinds of home-made court maintenance brushes and scrapers. Two things have always struck me about them. 1 – they look like they are home-made and 2 – they tend to be HEAVY.

7' Drag Brush

Manufactured by Lee Tennis (makers of the Har-Tru surface material), this court maintenance tool created for tennis courts works exceptionally well for bocce courts. The 7-foot drag brush is light-weight and, even if you have a 13- or 14-foot wide court, you can smooth it over with just two passes. This is quick enough to do between games without keeping players waiting very long.

Bristles are 4 ½ inches of synthetic fibers and the strong but light-weight frame is aluminum. Retails for $189.95 plus shipping.

Lute/scarifier

This strangely named 30” wide device is actually two implements in one. It is an all-aluminum combination tool for scarifying, leveling, and removing loose court material.

Strong and sturdy, the tool is light enough to handle with ease and is excellent for spreading new material during top-dressing. The concave shape of the 30” wide blade allows the tool to “float” along the surface without digging in. Use the serrated edge to scrape material from high spots, then flip the tool over to rake and smooth that spot and drag the loose material to fill in a lower point. Retails for $69.95 plus shipping.

Besides a heavy roller, the lute/scarifier and 7-foot drag brush should be all the maintenance tools a bocce court owner needs.

Photos of the week
"Here are some great beach bocce photos from Sonoma County Bocce Club members. Team (Highrollers) on New Year’s Day 1-1-2013 at Goat Rock on the Sonoma County CA. coast. Jayro, capo said it does not get any better: Friends, Bocce and Whale watching."

{Awesome! When I was a teacher in Massachusetts we took 55 seventh graders to Provincetown on a whale watch after doing much interdisciplinary study for months. Stormy Mayo was the captain and we saw whales each year.}
