Greetings bocce friends,

June is just about here. That means the nationals at Campo di Bocce are just around the corner. If you are going to be there, please come up and say hi to me and my bocce posse. If you have photos or bocce stories, anecdotes, etc. to share...even better!

This past week brought some sad and very unexpected news to our local bocce family. Our good friend and all around fix-it man Bill Hadley passed away unexpectedly and his passing has taken its toll on our bocce group. It's one thing when one of our members is ill or enters the hospital, but it's a totally different thing when they die. We're in the grieving process now and plan on figuring a way to properly honor our good friend sometime soon.

Bill was the most unfailingly pleasant person I have ever known. He was a decorated marine, a local police officer, and a retired engineer who worked on the space shuttle's heat shield. No matter what problems we encountered running bocce events, Bill was always there with a solution. Nothing flustered him. He was an especially kind man. He was special. We were lucky to have him with us for as long as we did.

Stay close and always be up front,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Ben Musolf sends news as the momentum is building for the 2011 US Bocce Championships...

2011 United States Bocce Championships
June 25 - July 2, 2011

The 2011 United States Bocce Championships are right around the corner and will be here before you know it!

The best Bocce players in the country will be competing for the right to be called the nation's best Bocce player and team, June 25 - July 2, 2011. This will be the fourth time Campo di Bocce will play host to this coveted event, and we are extremely excited for this opportunity.

In all, there will be eight different events and the competitions will be held in both Livermore and Los Gatos. Players from New York, Michigan, Missouri, Illinois, Massachusetts, Ohio, Washington, Oregon, and of course California will all be competing. We are extremely excited to host our guests and dignitaries this last week of June!

This year is a very special year because two of the events will be qualifying events for the upcoming World Championships. Mens Volo will kick off the 2011 United Stated Bocce Championships, and will be played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 24, 25, and 26, 2011. Kicking off the Championships will be the precision shooting competition on Friday eveing at 5:00 PM. Those individuals not in the Board of Directors meeting and all that are local participants, will be scheduled to compete Friday evening. Campo di Bocce has constructed 4 brand new Volo courts out in the vineyards. Up to four participants in the Men's Volo event will represent the United States in Feltre, Italy this fall.

{ Visit http://www.cmsboules.com }

There will be a Bar B Que all day Saturday and Sunday with plenty of fun to be had by all! Please make an effort to cheer on the Volo participants.

The Women's Punto, Raffa, Volo tournament will be taking place at the the same time as the Men's Volo event. The Women's Punto, Raffa, Volo tournament will be a two woman tournament. The format for the Women's event that was chosen will consist of 2 divisions with 8 teams in each division. Play will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 25 and 26, at Campo di Bocce of Livermore. Fasten your seatbelts ladies because you will be playing 7 games in two days, BEFORE the playoffs. We will be advancing two teams from each division, and the finals will take place Sunday afternoon. Good Luck to all!

Immediately following the Men's Volo, and Women's Punto, Raffa, Volo Championships, the tournament will then move down to Campo di Bocce of Los Gatos for the Open A and Open B Championships. Play will begin on Monday morning at 9:00 AM with the opening ceremonies starting at 8:00 AM, Monday, June 27, 2011. A traditional Italian style continental breakfast will be served on Monday morning. Please be sure to attend the Opening ceremonies in your team uniforms! Open play will be Monday, and will be completed Tuesday evening!

After the United States Open Champions are crowned, The Men's Punto, Raffa, Volo championships will begin on Wednesday morning! Keep in mind that play for the Men's Punto, Raffa, Volo event will be taking place at both Campo di Bocce of Livermore and Campo di Bocce of Los Gatos. The playoffs for the Men's Punto, Raffa, Volo championship will begin at 6:00 PM on Friday evening with the Semi-Finals and Finals taking place on Saturday, July 2, 2011. ALL PLAYOFF GAMES WILL BE HELD AT CAMPO di BOCCE OF LIVERMORE. Following the Punto, Raffa, Volo finals, the closing dinner will take place on the patio at Campo di Bocce of Livermore! The winning men's Punto, Raffa, Volo team will represent the United States at the 2012 World Championships, here in Livermore, California, in April 2012.

I want to give a special thank you to our sponsors of this year's event. It would not be possible without the local and national support our generous sponsors have given.

SECOND NOTICE

USA BOCCE FUND-RAISER

Mitch from USABocce.com has set the date for his annual Special Olympics fund-raiser. He writes...

"The second annual USABOCCE.com Tournament for the Special Olympics - June 3-4-5 - is just around the corner. This tournament has one of the highest payouts in the country for its size. First place $3500 with just a field of 40 teams. Last year at our inaugural tournament we had teams represented from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, New York, Maryland, Washington D.C. and Canada. JJ’s Lighthouse from Sharon, Pennsylvania took first place at last year's event.

This year's tournament will be located at the Bessemer Croatian Club, Bessemer, PA. Tournament information can be found at http://www.usabocce.com or call Mitchie @ 724-333-6385. We still have a few open spots and it’s a first-come first-serve basis."

Bocce fan Fran Ferrara sends a YouTube link to these young vocalists who we've heard before. They've already gone Platinum in Italy, and interestingly enough, their new name is Il Volo. Fran says...

WORLD SERIES OF BOCCE

The Toccolana Club's Jim Rizio reminds us about this year's World Series of Bocce - July 15 - 17, 2011 in Rome, New York.

Check the web site out here:

http://www.toccolanaclub.com/ and download an application here:

********************************************************************************************

Jim Rizio is also on the committee for the World Series of Bocce held at the Toccolana Club in Rome, NY.

He wrote...

"We want to use steel chrome pallinos this year but aren't having any luck finding 50 mm ones. All we can find are the 42 mm ones from DaVinciBocce.com. Can you be of any help in finding 50 mm pallinos?"

I answered...

"These are really just ball bearings. I brought my vacuum cleaner into the Electrolux place to get repaired and the owner had them to show that he could pick up three of them at once with the vacuum cleaner. So, maybe a vacuum place near you or someone that creates ball bearing will have them.

I'll post your email in the ezine and let's see if anyone out there knows where to find them.}

Wayne Farinacci responded with...

"Club Molisani in Cleveland, Ohio, buys stainless steel ball bearings from the following company:

McMaster-Carr
200 Aurora Industrial Parkway
Aurora, OH 44202
330-995-5500
cle.sales@mcmaster.com

Bocce enthusiasts should not be asking to purchase metal pallinos. You are correct in saying they are stainless steel ball bearings. We use the 1 1/2" ball bearing (38.1mm). 42mm (1.65") is about the largest I would suggest. The metal ball bearings are much heavier that the typical pallino that comes with a new bocce set. I think 50mm (1.97") is massive and a bit of overkill. However, McMaster-Carr has them in several different sizes. Have your readers give them a try."

Then Jim let me know the following...

"Just to let you know, I found Stainless Steel Balls at a place called: Craig Ball Sales out of Seaford, Delaware. They also had the best prices too. I ordered the 2" Chrome and the 2" stainless steel and we decided to go with the stainless steel."

{Check out http://www.craigballsales.com/ for Chrome Steel Balls, Tungsten Steel Balls, Borosilicate Glass Balls, Aluminum Balls, Ceramic Balls, Rubber Balls, Brass Balls.}
