Dr. Cordano writes in response to my question about drainage on carpeted outdoor courts.

“Our problems are minimal in our club, because we have a good drainage system and we have multiple holes (every meter or so) of a good one inch diameter at the CARPET SURFACE LEVEL. The surface of the IN-OUT carpet must be EVENLY COMPACT, so the bocce ball ROLLS EASILY and QUITE FAST. Quality must be pretty good, so it lasts at least for a couple of years (we’ve had them in our 6 courts for 18 months).

Of course the ideal is to have courts covered, as they are in MOST parts of the WORLD, so people can play all day, all year around and NO MAINTENANCE needed (synthetic bocce courts of 76-86 feet by 13 feet cost not less than 6 to 8000 dollars each, but last for 15-20 years) and they are always the same and don't require maintenance in spite of all the VOLO and RAFFA shots.

I will leave some additional comments for another time regarding my opinion on how to ROLL for POINTING as an answer for Mr. Piccirillo’s comments in your issue # 23.”

{Yes, yes, yes. Please send comments on the skills of the game. Any time Dr. Cordano speaks about bocce, everyone should listen. One of the top players in the world, his tips in this column will do two good things…improve my newsletter and help our readers improve their game.}

"Bocce Bum" Ben Musolf sends this in response to our topic of television exposure for bocce…

“We are in negotiations with a webmaster to put streaming online bocce on the Internet. You will be able to view bocce being played whenever the club is in operation. We will also be able to do nationwide bocce clinics. We will let you know as soon as we are up and running.”

{Wow! This sounds fabulous. Please keep me informed so that I can get the word out in this ezine.}

”One other note, while we were hosting the National Championships in May, we were fortunate enough to have a documentary made on the game of Bocce.”

{I understand that this documentary is in the final stages of preparation and I am very anxious to review it and then get the word out – this sounds like something that can’t help but be good for the game}

 Photos of the week – Salisbury, Massachusetts Beach Bocce
This week’s photos are from Salisbury, Massachusetts (up on the northeast corner of the state). Ten years ago it seemed like I was the only guy playing bocce on the beach. Nowadays you can’t go 100 yards without bumping into a bocce match. Low tide is prime beach bocce time and sand bars are the ideal real estate. Beach bocce playing friends of mine from South Carolina are fond of saying “Our groundskeeper comes in twice a day” and “We play under great duress…good looking women in bikinis everywhere!”

{Please send bocce photos from different areas of the USA. The Joy of Bocce Weekly features too many photos from the East - need pics from the "left coast" and the South & Mid-America too. I'd love to post them here on "This Week's Photos."}

 Non bocce product of the week – DNA Lifeprint
{Hey, bocce's great, but I'm always on the look-out for all kinds of good products for my readers}

My company has brought the DNA LifePrint Kit into its vast array of product diversity. This is the only commercial product endorsed by John Walsh of America's Most Wanted. It enables us to simply and painlessly take and store a DNA sample of our children or other family members. A lost child's DNA sample submitted to the FBI could be the definitive factor in that child's safe return. The DNA sample of a missing adult with Alzheimer's Disease can be positive proof leading to his/her safe return. This is the same product featured in February on "Live with Regis and Kelly".

DNA can settle questions of paternity and maternity. Furthermore, physicians are able to identify genetic patterns across generations in families that have maintained a DNA sample. Preserve your DNA ancestry with this easy-to-use and inexpensive kit. Endorsed by doctors, scientists, police, national genetic facilities and insurance companies.
