Hello again bocce lovers,

Please send some good vibes in our direction Tuesday evening, May 3rd at around 7:00 PM. That's the night of our final appeal to the Salem, NH zoning board for our bocce venue. We're going in with a proposal to reduce the size of the greenhouse by 50%. We'll offer to take down the front half of the structure which will have the effect of setting it back another 104 feet from the road. If this passes, we'll have two courts covered and heated for year-round play, and another two uncovered for good weather play. Not the ideal situation, but it cuts our losses and we can make do...

Photo shortage...

It troubles me a bit that there are so many tournaments listed in this ezine and so few send photos of their events. Please consider sending us a half dozen (or 8) pictures so that players in other areas can see what bocce life is like in your neck of the woods.

More news from Peter Rabito's (NY) new American Bocce Club...

"I just posted the club web site and have sent you a copy of our logo. The web address is: http://www.americanbocceclub.com .

The site is a work in progress and will have some great bocce stuff soon."

{The club meets at 7:30 pm every Wednesday night at Mill Dam Park in Huntington, New York. Play is on two fully lit HarTru surfaced courts.

Peter is a bocce zealot and his American Bocce Club is sure to prosper and spread the gospel of bocce.}

Bob Whitlow of Bocce USA responds to last week's question about determining the proper angle for bank shots...

"We had the same problem here at Bocce USA. Our side walls are 4x6 timbers. At any angle when the ball would strike the rail it would just follow down the rail producing no rebound at all. Our side rails were no challenge to anyone.

To correct this problem, I experimented with many different types of rubber/foam compounds. I settled on a 3/4 inch thick medium density foam used in insulating commercial refrigeration units. I purchased a roll of this material at our local recycling plant. Using a saber saw with a knife blade I cut this foam into 5 1/2 inch wide strips. I used liquid nails to secure this to my 12 foot 1x6's. Then I screwed the finished product to my 4x6 rails, recessing the screws completely thru the foam. The foam compensates for the give in the bare rails. Now the balls come off the foam rails perfectly. The players really like it. If their rolling path is blocked by other balls, they now come of the rail to the pollina for point."

{Sounds like the man has an area of expertise!}

SECOND REQUEST

Any reader who wants to resell The Joy of Bocce 2nd Edition, please let me know ASAP. When the first edition went out of print, I kept it alive by buying up the inventory. Heck, for a while there, I was the only game in town - if anyone wanted a copy, they had to buy it from me.

Since AuthorHouse has picked up the title, distribution has improved. It's plastered all over Amazon.com and it's in bookstores all across the country. Bocce business types like David Brewer (http://www.Boccebrew.com ), Simon Church (http://www.Buybocceballs.com ), Ben Musolf (http://www.campodibocce.com ), and Tony Battaglia (http://www.palazzodibocce.com ) are reselling the title too. I have to supply those copies to the resellers and need to place as large an order as possible to keep the unit cost down. Let me know ASAP (placing an order by Friday, May 6th) if you want to order anywhere from a couple dozen to a couple hundred copies for resale. Please REPLY.

Photos of the week
This week’s photos were submitted by Boccemon Tom McNutt. They highlight the recent 3rd annual Bellingham Bay Bocce Tournament (April 23rd).

The event drew 39 teams of four. According to McNutt...

"Once again we used the template courts from Backyard Bocce. We used an acrylic ball made for Playaboule which had terrific action on the synthetic Field Turf. Sportcraft and St. Pierre donated ball sets for the event. Bede Kortegast of Playaboule contributed as well and also brought a great array of balls for both Bocce and Boules.

We had teams with Special Olympic athletes as well as players with international bocce experience all in the same 'FUN' division. Our team from Blaine, Washington (Blaine Damage) came in second for the third year in a row, while the Auburn Bocce Club took top honors. We had players come from as far away as Sand Point, Alaska to the north and San Rafael, California to the south."

{The tourney raises funds for different charities each year and this time around it was "The Power of Hope." According to their web site "The Power of Hope unleashes the positive potential of youth through arts-centered intergenerational and multicultural learning programs that value self-awareness, leadership, community and social change." Visit them at http://www.powerofhope.org .

Clubhawk Gold Measures

The Premier Boules Measures have been flying off the shelf lately. But Joy of Bocce Weekly subscribers are overlooking an equally fine measure in the Clubhawk Gold. Using a string rather than a steel tape, this is an extremely accurate measuring device.

It extends a couple feet farther than the Premier, has the same calipers for close measurements, and even has a belt clip.

Remember, we don't need a finely calibrated instrument that measures exactly how far balls are from the object ball...we just need to know which is closer to it. This nifty string device does the trick. You pull out enough string to reach the first ball you are measuring. If you have to pull more string from the housing to reach the other ball in contention...then it is farther away!

Click below or the picture above to see more photos showing the Clubhawk’s features in detail. Retails for $21.95 plus $4.00 shipping anywhere in the USA.
