Hello again bocce buddies,

Thanks to all who sent idea/suggestions for our bocce fund-raiser that we are planning for the fall. More info to follow in subsequent issues.

This week we start play at our new indoor venue on Astroturf and will have some photos to show of our set-up. We've purchased 16-foot vinyl fence posts and designed an ingenious way of connecting them to frame off our courts.

Look for this set-up to become the photos of the week soon.

{Bocce camp sounds great! Bryan promises to send photos when this program is up and running. }

Ed Fournier of Bellingham, WA writes...

"I recently sent an email to Fox Sports suggesting they begin to televise bocce. I listed some of the positives for televised bocce. I even suggested an overhead camera that could be moved over the pallino, complete with superimposed concentric circles that would give a viewer the ability to appreciate the accuracy of each roll. Obviously, one request will go nowhere. What do you think about the concept and, if you like it, could you ask via your newsletter other enthusiasts to request bocce matches be televised?

{Sounds like a plan to me. Contact info below...}

Will Campbell asks...

"Just curious if anyone from your group has ever been up to Rome, NY for the World Series. It is coming up July 16-17. Usually 80-90 Men's teams and 40 or so Women's."

{Yes, I've played in this popular event - one of the biggest and most popular in the country. Thanks for the reminder. I hope someone will send photos, as I can't make it this time around.}

Richard Heisler of Eureka, CA sends this...

"I thought you might be interested in this page. It puts the variety of similar ball games into some perspective. We usually think that other bocce rules are odd, but it seems to me that they all have much in common. Especially when you compare them with the obscure and regional games.

I see that English lawn bowls has joined the CMSB which now puts bocce, petanque, volo and bowls under the same organization. Volo and petanque will be in the World Games in Germany.

Check out the postcards on the site, then you will see what they meant by 'French Postcards'.

{A fascinating site - so much info that you might experience "data overload" - but some of the coaching tips and techniques seem applicable to bocce as well as petanque.}

Photos of the week
This week's photos show the action in our annual “Bocce in the Park” tournament at the Nevins Library in Methuen, Massachusetts. { Visit the library at }The library opens up the event to kids in grades 2 through 6 and their parents. The popular event keeps growing, and this year 60 participants registered.

The library grounds are lovely, and adorned with some beautiful and rare trees (imported from Europe by Mr. Henry Nevins in the last century). The play area accommodated five of Chris Pfeiffer's Backyard Bocce template courts…enough for our 15-team event.

The library staff sets the tourney date and does the promotional work. The Nevins' amiable and well organized librarian Kathy Moran Wallace does the leg work. Although she gets a little stressed during the beehive of activity that the event becomes, she does a fabulous job each year. Ya’ gotta love people who love bocce AND books!

We begin by gathering everyone around one court and giving a little talk about the game - not too long though - people want to play bocce, not listen to someone talk about playing bocce. I generally tell a little about pétanque, bowls and bocce - and let them know that photos will be posted on the Internet Monday...and that they should let me know right away if they are in the witness protection program.

Next, I usually give a short demonstration for those who are unfamiliar with the game. Then we send the teams off to the courts to compete. An adult at each court to assist and act as referee is a must.

This year we had 15 teams - mostly kids, but a nice mix of adults too - in a double elimination event. Rain threatened and it showered a bit. An hour into the competition we thought about canceling and sending everyone home – but we could tell by the looks on kids’ faces that they were having too much fun. Besides, the trees afforded some protection from the elements.

Please feel free to follow this model to promote bocce and run a fun event for the community...set a date and get the word out...set up some Backyard Bocce courts...give a little talk and a little tournament bocce...hand out some awards to the winners...hold the event the same time each year and people plan on it. Don’t forget to tell people where they can get more info on bocce, and what bocce venues might be available to them.
