Hello bocce friends,

This week we've added a new bocce venue in our hometown (Methuen, Mass. - see this week's photos). The 80' by 14' court is well constructed at a local residence and brings a new group of players into our contact sphere.

Be sure to let us know about bocce happenings in your area - we're always looking for photos, announcements, updates, etc. that can help us keep the bocce community connected.

Click the link below to order an autographed copy from me. Shipping will be $4.00 (US Priority Mail).

I hope you will like this electronic newsletter. To be deleted from the list, you can Unsubscribe at the end of this issue. We will quickly and permanently remove your email address from our list (we'll be sorry to see you go). But, be aware that one of our enthusiastic readers suggested that “…bocce and unsubscribe are mutually exclusive terms.”

George Danner of Griffin, Georgia sends this from the 2005 DDT bocce tournament (DDT=DOG DAY TOURNAMENT)...

“4 man teams play to 12 pts. Rolling format: partners @ each end, 2 frames. On the 3rd frame, partners come together to roll just one ball. Then, on the 4th and 5th, partners @ each end. 6th = back together. With this rotation, you get to roll with all your teammates.

The DDT was set up to get teams ready for the Griffin vs. Peachtree City Open Cup. A team of 11 rollers would do singles, doubles, and 4-man matches during the tournament. The tournament is set up for 21 individual games. The captain selects the line-ups for games. No one player can participate in more than 4 matches. The tournament is played every 2 years. PTC 3, Griffin 1. The tournament has never gone down to the 21st game.”

{Interesting format and rotation. In international play there is a singles, a doubles, and a triples match, and a player may only compete in only two of the three events. Please send photos and results after the event.}

Elio sends this news via the Yahoo! Group Bocceanonymous...

"I wanted to personally invite you to a Bocce Tournament that will be held on September 24th & 25th during the Christopher Columbus Italian Festival in Baltimore, Maryland.

The tournament is a double elimination, 2 day event. The total prize money will be a minimum of $2000 divided among the top 3 teams. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize. Four players to a team. The registration fee is $100 per team ($25 per person).

We are currently working out discounts at the Days Inn near the festival for the 2 nights if you choose to stay there. If anyone is interested, please email"

{Baltimore is a great city...sounds like an excellent event to take in...Italian Festival and all...}

Mike Grasser of Michigan writes to remind us that the contact person for that big tourney coming up September 16-18 at the Ciociaro Club in Windsor, Ontario is Remo Incitti (519-965-7799 or 519-969-4825).

{This is a fabulous venue - worth the trip just to see the set-up.}

{Many emails come in asking about archived issues of The Joy of Bocce Weekly - I'm almost up to date with the archiving, adding a couple issues each week. Many want to see the photos of the week that went with a particular issue, but when you click on those photos you get directed to the current week's photos. I'm talking with the "techies" who host the ezine about whether it would be possible (or too memory intensive) to archive each week's photos...stay tuned.}

Photos of the week
This week's photos show off a brand new court here in my hometown of Methuen, Massachusetts. The 80' by 14' court is at the home of Tom Grella. He and his circle of friends have formed the Havana Rollers Bocce League to promote good bocce play and good cigar smoking.

The beautifully constructed court is lighted for night play and has a stone dust surface. Timbers line the court’s boundaries and additional tiers are added at the ends in a staircase-like effect. These are high enough for safety (keeping the pallino in on hard hits) but not so high that they obstruct the view of spectators. Also there are nicely padded swing boards and ball racks built in to the sides at each end.

There is a nicely designed seating area at one end in front of a cabana with bar, TV, cigars, etc. The Grellas have done a fabulous job of incorporating bocce into an already lovely backyard space. And they will provide a recreational program for 6 to 8 four-player teams.
The Grella family runs Grella Financial Services – check out their new court by clicking on the photo above right and/or view their web site at
