Bocce news & readers' feedback
{Publisher's comments in brackets...}

Al Piermattei of Brigantine, NJ wrote with info about the wooden bocce set pictured in this ezine a few weeks back (Cuban Mahogany Bocce, Vol. V, Issue 6 - February 6, 2006 ).

"While I do not have any specific information on the wooden bocce set that you purchased, I can give you some general information.

My name is Al Piermattei. I am 84 years old and I came to the U.S. from Italy in 1934. My father was in the U.S. during World War I. He was a wood turner by trade and he made wooden bocce sets for most of the bocce clubs in Philadelphia. His boccia and pallino’s were made
from a wood called, Legume White that was imported from South America.

My father turned the boccia and pallinos with a hand tool and outside calibers. He made (almost) a perfectly round boccia. He would polish them and then soak them in oil. This procedure was done to keep the wood from drying, because dry wood splits much easier. In about 1937,
composition bocce came onto the market and that was the end to my father’s business.

Please note: the large ball is called 'boccia' and the little ball is called 'pallino'. The word 'pallina' refers to a child’s marble.

My fellow bocce players and I in Brigantine enjoy reading your book and your newsletter."

{Thanks Al, for this fascinating account. It's an interesting piece of the puzzle of bocce history.}

Bede Kortegast of Playaboule sends this good news in response to recent requests for bocce software...

"You can download a free demo version of the tournament software from our web site. It is fully functional but you cannot save or print. I took a lot of time researching trying to find a suitable software and this stuff is a winner. We work closely with the developer in Germany and the price cannot be beaten."

Gerald Martinez says..."I need help in starting a Bocce Club here in Albuquerque, New Mexico-USA. There are no clubs in New Mexico. I would appreciate any ideas."

{It's interesting that Bob Potts wrote from Albuquerque last week about a backyard court he is building. This week he added "I’ll put together some photos and a description of the project and forward sometime soon. Bocce is not a common sport in New Mexico… most of the workers think this is a large garden we’re building. One man asked what would grow in so shallow a garden."

We need to connect the bocce aficionados in New Mexico.

I often hear the question "Why isn't Bocce part of the Olympics?" The hard truth is that the bocce we play in the USA has no chance of going Olympic. Heck, we're the only country playing open rules. Everybody else is playing international rules Punta Raffa Volo or Volo. There has to be X amount of countries playing a sport for it to even be recognized by the IOC.

USBF president John Ross thinks that the quicker, more entertaining volo speed shooting or precision shooting contests have the best chance for Olympic status. The speed shooting takes only 5 minutes (see how many fixed targets you can hit in 5 minutes - world record = 51 out of 51}.

Photos of the week
This week’s pictures come courtesy of George Farruggio of Punta Gorda, Florida. He says..."As you know, we lost our club in Hurricane Charley. Now we play at the ELKS of Punta Gorda, Florida.

We have one 12 x 60 ft. clay/Har-Tru court and one 12 x 70 ft. cement with indoor outdoor carpet. The ball rolls very well. When you shoot the ball it bounces a little. Look at the scenery... we are on the Peace River across from Port Charlotte.

My wife plays all the time - here she is {pictured to the right} tossing her ball on what we call "the green court". We have four leagues that play on various days. The weather has been about 70 degrees plus. Until the next time KEEP ROLLING.

P.S. Don't forget the name of the game is BOCCE not Bocce Ball."

{One of George Farruggio's pet peeves is people calling the game bocce ball rather than bocce. Please follow George's lead and send bocce photos from your neck of the woods.}

Fine line of health and nutrition products from Market America...

I discovered this company's excellent products ten years ago and have been one of the faithful ever since.

Many of the supplements (Isotonix) are in an "isotonic state." By adding a specified amount of water to these powdered vitamins they approximate the composition of your body fluids. There is no need for digestion, the product passing directly into the small intestine and the blood stream. It becomes what nutritionists call bio-available, not like pills and tablets which are poorly assimilated by the body.

Product lines include...

Antioxidants

Blood Sugar Maintenance

Bone & Joint Health

Children's Health

Customized Nutrition

Digestive Health

Energy and Mind Enhancement

General Health

Heart Health

Men's Health
