Bocce faithful,

Did you notice all the exposure Curling got in the Olympics? People everywhere were fascinated by the sport and now want to give it a try. Curling is another "cousin" of bocce - surely evolving from the family of ball and target games - only this one's on ice. Promoters lament the fact that the growth of curling may be stunted by the lack of facilities. Too bad you need so much ice - it could really take off in the warmer Bible Belt - "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

If bocce could get the kind of big time TV exposure that curling got, "newbies" wouldn't have such a big problem of finding venues. People could locate courts, or even give it a go on their lawns. Our time will come! Until then, keep the ball rolling...

Joe DeFrank of Honolulu tells of the next wrinkle in Hawaiian bocce...

"To refresh your memory, we play a modified form of bocce called Hawaii Rules Bocce. Our turf research area is set up as a series of mini-fairways with 5 separate links (see image right - click it for better view).

We have developed a Vegas Style match play tournament where participants start with 5 chips. We pair 4 people per link with the winner of each link collecting the ante - 5 links equal 1 round. The chip ante rises with each round with the maximum bet equal to the minimum chip count for players in a foursome. We progress through 4 rounds of play with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place determined by chip count.

The tournament is a great way for students to meet and get to know each other with some friendly competition and strategic wagering. The match play and chip wagering makes for some dramatic comebacks and collapses in the later rounds. I believe the match play system through links is a truly unique form of bocce with potential for use at resorts and clubs.

Feel free to share this with the Bocce Nation and if any of your subscribers want to tour our facility they can contact me for an appointment. To locate our facility through web based mapping services use the following address;

2717 Woodlawn Drive.
Honolulu HI 96822."

{Wow - it's like Texas Hold 'Em Bocce!}

George Hoehl requests help for Maryland SO...

"I am a coach for Special Olympics Maryland – Charles County - for their Bocce training program. I was wondering if you would include a request for volunteers for our Summer Tournament in June. We play at Towson University and have a two day Tournament with Special Olympic Athletes from the entire State of Maryland. Please provide me feedback and if you would include this request I will work on an article for one of your April issues.

I also host a 30 Athlete Special Olympic Tournament in June in Waldorf, MD were we could also use volunteer officials."

{Yes! Keep us informed. Please send info/article/photos...volunteers contact George at ghoehl@hotmail.com.}

Bede Kortegast of Playaboule sends this good news in response to recent requests for bocce software...

"You can download a free demo version of the tournament software from our web site. It is fully functional but you cannot save or print. I took a lot of time researching trying to find a suitable software and this stuff is a winner. We work closely with the developer in Germany and the price cannot be beaten."

Tony Randazzo of Martinez, California writes...

"Our league has used 4X6 (for portable courts) for years. They tend to twist and are difficult to assemble. There was a set of courts built with plastic fence posts with a board for a sleeve. My computer will not bring back the photos from the back issues. Can you send them so I can show the person who assembles the courts?"

{I have been getting many requests like this one. The problem has been that many photos were "Photos of the Week" and are taken down the following week to make room for new pictures. I've added the photos you allude to as this week's photos, but created a permanent page for them. See Photos below...Also, I am doing more of this so that future photos of the week are posted on a separate page that can be accessed at any time, not just for one week.}

Photos of the week
This week’s pictures show how we created temporary indoor courts with vinyl fence posts set up on carpet or Astroturf. We set up for play, then break down when finished. Martignetti Enterprises will custom build these for you if you are interested - click the picture to the right for details...

I've made this a separate page on the web site so that it will be permanently available (not just this week). To navigate there, web surfers can click on Portable Courts from the home page, then Temporary Courts.

Bocce Court Maintenance Tools

I’ve seen all kinds of home-made court maintenance brushes and scrapers. Two things have always struck me about them. 1 – they look like they are home-made and 2 – they tend to be HEAVY.

7' Drag Brush

Manufactured by Lee Tennis (makers of the Har-Tru surface), this court maintenance tool created for tennis courts works exceptionally well for bocce courts. The 7-foot drag brush is light-weight and, even if you have a 13- or 14-foot wide court, you can smooth it over with just two passes. This is quick enough to do between games without players standing around waiting very long.

Bristles are 4 ½ inches of synthetic fibers and the strong but light-weight frame is aluminum. Retails for $149.95 plus shipping.

Lute/scarifier

This strangely named 30” wide device is actually two implements in one. It is an all-aluminum combination tool for scarifying, leveling, and removing loose court material.

Strong and sturdy, the tool is light enough to handle with ease and is excellent for spreading new material during top-dressing. The concave shape of the 30” wide blade allows the tool to “float” along the surface without digging in. Use the serrated edge to scrape material from high spots, then flip the tool over to rake and smooth that spot and drag the loose material to fill in a lower point. Retails for $54.95 plus shipping.

Besides a heavy roller, the lute/scarifier and 7-foot drag brush should be all the maintenance tools a bocce court owner needs.

Non bocce product of the week
{Hey, bocce's great, but I'm always on the look-out for all kinds of good products for my readers}

Market America Isotonix Vitamin B-12

I discovered this company's excellent products ten years ago and have been one of the faithful ever since.

Many of the supplements (Isotonix) are in an "isotonic state." By adding a specified amount of water to these powdered vitamins they approximate the composition of your body fluids. There is no need for digestion, the product passing directly into the small intestine and the blood stream. It becomes what nutritionists call bio-available, not like pills and tablets which are poorly assimilated by the body.

Scientists at the USDA’s Human Nutrition Center have said B-12 is the single most important nutrient adversely affected by aging. Isotonix B-12 helps reduce the effects of stress and promotes energy, stamina and endurance.
