The weekly Ezine for bocce aficionados everywhere
Volume 5, Issue #22 - June 5, 2006
Publisher: Mario Pagnoni Copyright 2006

Greetings,

No publication last week. I was away for the holiday weekend and just couldn't complete an issue. Whenever that happens, I hear from the ezine-less bocce faithful seeking their weekly "bocce fix." It's good to know that we are missed.

Although a weekly is an ambitious task, I try hard not to miss. It's like jogging (which I have been doing on and off since 1964 - and persevering through 9 knee surgeries - some guys never learn). If I set a goal to run say, 90 minutes, I almost never quit before the hour-and-a-half. Every time you quit it makes it that much easier to give in the next time. While I always "listen" to my body when working out, I only cut the run short if absolutely necessary. Same goes for the ezine. If I'm too busy or otherwise stressed out, I'll miss a week. But I'm gonna publish every Monday if there is any way to get it done.

Bocce news & readers' feedback
{Publisher's comments in brackets...}

Bill Jones from Chilliwack B.C., Canada sends news...

"Here is a picture of some of our Bocce group. We just have one mat inside and the city just brought the two outside courts up to date, so we now have the option of playing indoors or outdoors. Some of the people cannot play in the sun, that is why we are keeping the indoors going. They are all new to Bocce, but they are enjoying it. We are hoping to get another mat for next winter.

Enjoying your newsletter, Mario. Keep up the good work!"

{Bill has converted some Canadian lawn bowls players to bocce and doing a great job of it! Note the vinyl posts used for side and end boards. These are placed over a carpet or mat to frame in the court. Bill's group has duplicated our Ken Waldie SSC Inc.'s indoor bocce venue set-up. Imitation is the highest form or flattery.}

Similarly, Art Bjork (Bocce Director Special Olympics Florida) says "We are looking at making bocce courts out of 3" PVC pipe for better storage and it will last a lot longer than the 2X4's we have now!"

Jay DeCianno, President of the San Gennaro Foundation of Virginia sends news of a big event that will include bocce...

"The First Annual San Gennaro Italian Festival of Alexandria will take place at Oronoco Park, on the Potomac, during Saturday, September 30, 2006 and will be presented by the San Gennaro Foundation of Virginia, a not-for-profit community organization.

The San Gennaro Italian Festival is a major event in many cities across the United States, including Las Vegas and Los Angeles and is an annual celebration of the Patron Saint of Naples, Italy. The first San Gennaro Italian Festival was held in New York City on September 19, 1926 when newly arrived immigrants from Naples settled in the Little Italy section and decided to continue the celebration of traditions they had been following since 305 A.D. The New York City celebration now extends over an 11-day period and is in its 79th year.

The San Gennaro Italian Festival of Alexandria will start with a traditional, time-honored procession that will include the Statue of San Gennaro and travel the streets of Alexandria from St. Mary’s Church to the park. The park area will be decorated with festive banners and arches in red, white, and green, the colors of the Italian flag. Many of the metropolitan area Italian businesses will offer a variety of Italian specialty foods and pastries. In addition, there will be numerous other vendors who will set up shop within the park selling a wide variety of goods and merchandise, including international foods, souvenir items, and merchandise. There will also be entertainment for the children, Italian cultural activities, and a traditional bocce ball tournament."

Tom Belluomini from San Bruno, CA asks...

Keep up the wonderful information on Bocce and what's going on around the country."
