Bocce faithful,

Had a great weekend playing stickball in my hometown of Springfield, Massachusetts (but lost the game 9-8). It was fun and another great reunion with my friends from the old neighborhood.

We get together on the last Sunday in June every year and play the game of our youth. Some of the old guard are 70+ years old and still show up ready to play.

"Stickball" is kind of a misnomer for the game we play. We use regular bats and gloves and hit a solid white rubber ball on the schoolyard hot top (no running bases). Of all the ball I played in high school, American Legion, college and semi-pro leagues, this game holds the fondest memories for me.

Too young to play, I'd wake up Saturday mornings and hear the unmistakable sound of balls bouncing off bats at Howard St. School. I'd get dressed quickly, hop the fence between Wilcox and Union Streets, and scoot over there to shag foul balls for the older guys.

One day they were shorthanded and put me in the line-up. I played the outfield, deftly dealing with the monkey bars in front of me, and the oak tree and chain link fence behind me. I made a half dozen "circus" catches snaring drives out of the tree branches and caroms off the school building. At bat I peppered the school and the outfield with line drives. From then on I never missed a start.

I was 15, playing with guys twice my age...wonderful guys with colorful nicknames like Moe the Owl, The Bloke, Paulie Cigar, Pear, Jimmy Pants, Weasel, and Igor. Life was good! On the last Sunday every June we relive a little of it.

Photos of the week
This week's excellent photos were originally photos of the week last July. I've added them to the Bocce Venues page because they show off one of the nicest courts in Massachusetts.

Tom Grella Sr. spared no expense building a fabulous 80' by 14' bocce court including seating at both ends, lights for night play, and other amenities. He hosts a Tuesday night league (Havana Rollers) of 30 to 40 players, guests, and cigars aficionados.
