Greetings Bocce Brethren,

I met with the local blog guru and all systems are GO to launch a bocce blog in the next couple weeks. You will be able to post comments, questions, and photos. You'll find it at, but you will be able to link to it from

The Bocce Guy...

I help run a youth bocce tournament every summer at our local library, often drawing as many as 60 middle school aged players. Recently, I ran into one of the kids in town who recognized me saying, "I know you. You're the bocce guy." It made sense to me to be The Bocce Guy, because there are many who are referred to as Mr. Bocce and that label includes the connotation of being a great player, which I am not. But The Bocce Guy is the perfect handle for me - it connotes knowing all about the game. I know about as much as anyone about bocce, being the only person in the USA writing about the sport weekly. If I don't know the answer to your question, I can find it, or direct you to the person who can. Would you expect any less from The Bocce Guy? Stay tuned.

Bocce news & readers' feedback
{Publisher's comments in brackets...}

We're gearing up to help run the second annual Martignetti Family Charity Bocce Tournament on Sunday, October 8th at the Derry SportsZone (Derry, NH).

Last year we raised $22,000 for the Jimmy Fund and this time around our goal is $50,000 for the Joey Fund. {Click the photo to the right to learn more about the Joey Fund.}

We are looking for some big-time sponsors and we are seeking players who want to spend an enjoyable day playing bocce and dining on fine Italian cuisine, while helping raise funds for a worthy cause.

You can register on-line to play (either as part of a 4-player team or just by yourself - we'll put you on a team) at . If you can see your way to making a donation ($50,000 will take some serious effort on all our parts) of money or items we might raffle or award as prizes, please REPLY ASAP.

Guy De Santis writes with a question I get often...

"How can I view pictures from past issues? I have tried a couple different ways. I went back to that particular issue, but when I click on 'This week's photos' it always displays pictures of the most recent issue."

{This has been a problem because I didn't want my web site to get too large. If I add a new page every week the site will grow by 52 pages per year. The site is already nearly 100 meg which is pretty large (most people have sites that don't approach 50 meg). So, I place the photos on the same page each week, simply replacing the old ones with the new ones. This creates the problem Guy De Santis alludes to above - you can't view the photos via the archived back issues. Sometimes you when I made Dr. Mazzei's Maine bocce court the photos of the week, I added the pictures to the Bocce Venues section. (view them here .)

I've decided that, starting in 2007, I'll add a new page each week for the issue's photos. This will be more work for me, but will make the pictures available via the archived back issues. My site has the storage capacity of 500 meg - so I should be OK for the next couple years. I guess I'll worry about the storage problem then.}

Here's another question I get pretty often...

"I have not been getting your weekly Joy of Bocce issues. Please let me know what's wrong. I sure do miss it." - Nick Pezzulo

{Every week about 800 ezine email addresses bounce back to me. Email deliverability is a problem throughout the entire ezine industry. Some get inadvertently snagged in spam filters, others bounce for different reasons (e.g. - the person's mail box is full).

Here are a couple things you can do: Confirm your subscription - click Confirm at the bottom of the ezine and follow the simple instructions (I also send periodic email requests for readers to Confirm - be on the lookout for those).

You can contact your email provider and let them know to "whitelist" mail coming from If all else fails, you can always just go to Back Issues at every Monday to find the current issue archived. I've been archiving them right after I launch the ezine - so, even if the issue doesn't show up in your in-box, it is available on-line.

Photos of the week
This week's photos show off the new backyard court our friends at Vernon Realty built for a client in Salem, NH. The new bocce court owner hosted a Bocce Pig Roast for friends and staff of his Massachusetts Gold's Gym facilities.

There was volleyball, karaoke, excellent food and beverages, and some outstanding bocce competition.

Bocce product of the week
Let’s Play Bocce!

The fourth entry in American Production’s Backyard Sports Series (others include Let’s Play Badminton! Let’s Play Croquet! and Let’s Play Horseshoes!), this video runs 45 minutes.

Billed as “the essential beginner’s videoguide” Let’s Play Bocce! is just that. It includes sections on the history of bocce, the court and equipment, playing the game, ball deliveries and more.

The section on the History of Bocce is excellent, acknowledging the murky details of bocce’s birth and referencing the common ancestry of boules and lawn bowls. The production makes wonderful use of art work depicting notables such as Sir Francis Drake, Queen Elizabeth I and others associated with the games’ evolution. It brings together the information a newcomer to the sport needs to get started. This professionally produced tape definitely deserves a look-see.

$22.95 plus shipping - click the Let's Play Bocce! image to order.
