Hello again bocce faithful,

Bocce Blog coming soon, he said hopefully...stay tuned a little longer.

As I have been experimenting with the new blog I've discovered that I don't know what I am doing. The learning curve is a little steeper than I had anticipated. Not sure if the blog stuff is complicated or I am dumb, (suspect the latter).

Be patient - between running all my senior sports programs and special bocce events, I'll find some time to figure it out.

Speaking of senior sports - This is the anniversary of 9/11. Our non-profit program is named after Ken Waldie, a passenger on one of the ill fated planes. I hope you can find some time to send some kind thoughts out in the direction of his family here in Massachusetts (and to all those affected by the tragedy).

George Danner of Griffin, Georgia sends an update...

"We finished our oldest bocce tournament last weekend.. The 'DDT' (Dog Days Tournament) started in 1996 with a 4 player format. The 'RED TEAM' was gunning for a 3 peat (2004-2005 champions) but lost out in the first round of knock out matches.

New 2006 champions are Dustin Danner, Lance Taylor, John Landis and George Danner. We did not lose a match all night. Rolling in the Zone...

The Fall Classic is scheduled for October 21, 2006. The 2006 Open Cup Bocce Tournament (Hurricane Tournament) had 10 teams of four rolling. We finished up around 3 AM but all had a great time rolling. We had two rookies on the winning team. Another roller 'hooked' on bocce. Joel, Stewart, Amber and Matt Open Cup Champs."

Photo right = 2004-05 defending champs: Jeff D. John C., Jeff McLean and Curt S. {Check out the Adam Sandler shirts}.

Re: the last couple week's discussion of the movie - The Tournament, Boccemon Tom McNutt says...

"Don't forget 1999 Charles Winkler's 'Rocky Marciano' starring George C. Scott. Several shots of the bocce court and a story of why folks use oyster shells."

And Matt DiPaula sends a link to more info on the film...

************************ CHARITY BOCCE EVENT ************************

We're gearing up to help run the second annual Martignetti Family Charity Bocce Tournament on Sunday, October 8th at the Derry SportsZone (Derry, NH).

Last year we raised $22,000 for the Jimmy Fund and this time around our goal is $50,000 for the Joey Fund.

We are looking for some big-time sponsors and we are seeking players who want to spend an enjoyable day playing bocce and dining on fine Italian cuisine, while helping raise funds for a worthy cause.

You can register on-line to play (either as part of a 4-player team or just by yourself - we'll put you on a team) at http://www.bocce4charity.us . If you can see your way to making a donation ($50,000 will take some serious effort on all our parts) of money or items we might raffle or award as prizes, please REPLY ASAP.

Photos of the week
This week's photos show how one civic-minded bocce family did a good deed for a local charity auction. The Grella family of Methuen, MA donated a "Day of Bocce" at their home court (including dinner for eight, a set of Perfetta Bocce Balls, autographed copies of The Joy of Bocce, and instruction by yours truly. Is this a great idea, or what?

We invite you to copy the model for this event. This one benefited a local YMCA and the winning bid topped out at $600.

The guests arrived at 4:00 PM, got acquainted with the hosts, had some wine and hors d'oeuvres in the courtyard under the pergola, then assembled on the court for a primer on how to play bocce.

After a brief demonstration, the games began. We separated the eight guests into two teams of four and "got right after it." Although some had never played before, they were quick studies and I'm sure we made some new converts.

The Grellas are the ultimate hosts. Lovers of all the good things in life, they make guests feel at home immediately with their pleasant demeanor and genuine warmth.

On the menu was fruit, pate, cheese, shrimp cocktail, salad with lobster, Delmonico steaks cooked on their outdoor, wood fired brick oven (fueled by apple wood from the local orchard), and dessert of cake and gelato.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery. Please feel free to copy the Grella family model and support a worthy cause in your neck of the woods.
