John and Andrea Ross of the USBF update us on the results from Brazil...

"We just got back from Brazil about an hour ago and I wanted to drop a quick note to let you know how we did. The team from the Palazzo di Bocce, representing the United States, achieved the highest finish ever for a United States raffa team in world competition, finishing 5th! The team included Jorge Moreno as captain, Dr. Angel Cordano, Mike Lapcevich, Jason Wisniewski, and John Ross as head of delegation and coach.

The top 6 finishers were Brazil 1 (Sao Paulo), Italy, Paraguay, Venezuela, United States, and Brazil 2 (Montenegro).

We witnessed history of another sort as Brazil beat Italy for the world title! The championship match was the most exciting any of us had ever seen. Italy won the triples. The singles and doubles were played simultaneously using two courts. If Italy won one of the two games the match would be over. If they lost one of the games, the other game would decide the outcome. Brazil was winning the doubles and Italy was ahead 10 to 2 in the singles. Brazil ended up winning the doubles, so all the attention focused on the singles match. Everyone assumed that the Italian player would prevail because of his large lead and spectacular ability.

Andre Backes, the Brazilian who represented Brazil last year at the singles world championships at the Palazzo di Bocce went onto another level playing the best bocce we had ever seen, overcoming the large deficit to win the game 15 to 14! His final volo shot replaced Italy's ball for two points and game!"

{Excellent news - highest USA finish ever! John promises to send photos - stay tuned.}

Robert Agnelly from New Orleans writes...

"Please don't forget us. While our membership is down because of Katrina, we are still playing Bocce at our indoor, air conditioned Clubhouse. The Bocce Club of Greater New Orleans is alive and getting well. Bocce players and visitors are always welcome. Our Club is open every Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday evenings beginning at 7:00 pm. We are located at 2340 Severn Avenue, Metairie, LA 70001 - only three blocks off I-10 and Causeway Boulevard exit."

ALVARO BETTUCCHI sends news...

"The XXI annual Italian American Raffa Bocce Tournament was won by the South San Francisco Italian American Citizens Club with Roy Bellafronet, Agostino Figoni and Carlo Torrone.

Second place went to Vallejo Bocce Federation, with Dick Gomez, Karen Gomez and Gloria Taylor. Third place was Los Gatos, with Diane Kelley, Theresa Rea and Alfredo Knecht. 16 teams participated, with teams from San Mateo, Sacramento, Martinez, San Jose and San Rafael. Summer Hill Homes was the sponsor, which allowed for excellent prizes, which included breakfast and an outstanding lunch. Thank you for having the day (listed) on JOY OF BOCCE.

P.S. Our club has been a member of ABA, but this year will also join the USBF. We need to work together for the spread of BOCCE."

{AMEN...and it is spreading. New England right now is experiencing the fastest growth I have ever witnessed.}

************************ CHARITY BOCCE EVENT ************************

We're gearing up to help run the second annual Martignetti Family Charity Bocce Tournament on Sunday, October 8th at the Derry SportsZone (Derry, NH).

Last year we raised $22,000 for the Jimmy Fund and this time around our goal is $50,000 for the Joey Fund.

We are looking for some big-time sponsors and we are seeking players who want to spend an enjoyable day playing bocce and dining on fine Italian cuisine, while helping raise funds for a worthy cause.

You can register on-line to play (either as part of a 4-player team or just by yourself - we'll put you on a team) at http://www.bocce4charity.us . If you can see your way to making a donation ($50,000 will take some serious effort on all our parts) of money or items we might raffle or award as prizes, please REPLY ASAP.

Donald Muniz from El Paso, TX says...

"I would like to form some club but am still finding it hard to find players."

Photos of the week
I've added a page to the Joy of Bocce web site called Bocce Tidbits. I'll put there some odds and ends about the game that might be of interest to readers. Some of our past photos of the week seem to fit into this category.

This week I've added photos that show how our group has eliminated the pre-game coin toss. We draw red and green marbles (or small balls) from a bag without looking. For a four vs. four game, the four who select red marbles play against the four who draw green. Furthermore, we agree ahead of time that green will play the pallino and first ball to begin the match.

You can remove a couple marbles from the bag if you are drawing for doubles (2-player) or triples (3-player) teams. Also, if you use different color bocce balls, you can procure corresponding colored marbles.

This method streamlines things and gets the game started. No looking around for a coin to flip. No waiting for the coin toss winners and losers to decide who gets the pallino or which color ball they want. Just play!

Everybody Seems to Need a New Pallino

So many recreational bocce players lose pallinos. They play in a variety of terrains and tell me that "It got lost in the woods" or "It bounced over the cliff" or just that "It disappeared without a trace."

Fear not. Playaboule comes to the rescue with quality pallinos at a very good price.
