Hello bocce friends,

A couple days ago I sent a Joy of Bocce Special Edition ezine issue which was a solo mailer offering a new holiday gift idea (see Joy of Bocce Diploma - product of the week below).

The honorary degree, a doctorate in bocce (Ph. B) was a big hit and we are processing orders as I write these words. Many have asked if we could frame the diplomas so that they could take advantage of "one-stop shopping."

So, I've set things up with my friends at Diploma Depot so that they can ship the diploma already framed. Here are the details and the Buy Now button:

Your diploma enclosed in a beautiful oak frame.
Absolutely gorgeous solid oak frame enhances your diploma. These beautiful frames feature a stepped profile with bevel cut. Rich grain finish throughout.

Bocce Bob Whitlow sends news from Illinois...

{That's McCord's Market team member Donna Ellis rolling the winning point a few weeks ago.)

As the league leaders battle for position, the points race continues to tighten in Monday night bocce league at Bocce USA. Boneyard Boccie Ball Club of Benton downed Severinís All Stars-n-Stitches all three games sending them within five points of league leading Franklin-Williamson Foundation. Hershel Gregge scored big for Boneyard.

The Foundation took two out of three games from Greg Galli Auto Body. Karl Hammann of Herrin was the ace for the Foundation. Shirley Galli was the top scorer for Galliís.

Stotlar Lumber Company won two out of three from the West Frankfort Lionís. Stotlarís scored eight point in their only losing game and totaled out thirty-six points for the night. Frank Moschino of Mulkeytown and John Holland of Hurst were the top rollers for Stotlarís. Lion Bob Ellis was the leader for the Lionís Club.

The team that took the biggest jump in the point standings was J & S Professional Pharmacy. The Pill Pushers again won all three games and the maximum fourth-two points from Southern Illinois Bank sending them from sixth to fourth in the standings. Kathy Escue and Sally Neimeyer were the top pointers for the Pharmacy.

Tom Borga of Christopher and Jan Tripp of Hurst were the big scorers for the Bank. McCordís Market enjoyed a night off and collected the automatic fourty-two points for the bye.

Bocce league play continues every Monday night at Bocce USA. The public is invited to come out and watch players in action. There is ample seating throughout the court area and the admission is free.

Boccemon Tom McNutt has sent an answer to the question posed here recently on covering bocce courts to protect them from rain...

"I have referred several people to a product made by Awn-Tex.

What I like best about this product is that it is permeable, durable, and comes in many colors. The down side of any cover is that it produces shade and this in turn is a perfect breeding ground for moss communities. If this is an acceptable side effect have the tent or awning company place grommets every 2' around the perimeter for easy tie downs. We like to refer folks to Rainier Tent at .

A modified roller typical for use with swimming pool covers work great for this use. Moderately trade smart folks can put one together. With access or ability to perform a few welds one can easily make their own. I am attaching photos of one on Pearl Island, off the western Washington coast. This is so easy for folks who have seasonal courts. See attached photos. I will do a segment on dealing with moss for you in the near future."

I had an interesting telephone conversation recently with Michael Grasser who was lamenting the fact that the official bocce balls for world competition are not chosen because of their quality or the precision of their specs. Neither are they selected by a committee of high level players from around the world.

Rather, the various ball manufacturers bid on becoming the official ball for the event, much like Coca Cola might fork over big bucks to become the official drink of the Olympics. The money is paid to the international federation governing the event. The ball manufacturer must also supply four or five sets of balls to each country competing in the tournament.

{Speaking of quality bocce sets, check out the dozens of beauties on Grasser's new website below...}

High End bocce balls - a great holiday gift...

Photos of the week
This week's photos show off the indoor court at the Dante Club in West Springfield, Massachusetts. I was there for a family event a while back and sneaked away with Rico Daniele to roll a game or two and to snap a few pictures.

The facility has a function hall, two bars, racquetball courts, and a health club complete with sauna, steam room, weight room and other amenities that attract more than 900 members.

They also have two fast playing stone dust bocce courts, one inside and one out; both are 76' by 10'.

{These photos permanently posted on the Joy of Bocce web site under Bocce Venues.}
