Hello bocce aficionados,

We've set the date for the Massachusetts Senior Games for bocce. All participants must be at least 50 years old by 12/31/07.

Because of the large number of entries last year, we've decided to go to a "triples" format this time - three players per team, each rolling two balls, everybody walking and playing both ends of the court.

The date is Saturday, July 7, 2007 and more details will follow shortly. My non-profit group (Ken Waldie Senior Sports Circuit, Inc.) will be hosting the event at our venue in North Andover, MA.

If you have any "clout" in your state, try to get your Senior Games to include bocce, and also suggest that it be a national event (teams who medal in the various state games qualify to play in the National Senior Olympics the following year).

To date, bocce is not a national event in the Senior Olympics and only a few states offer it as a regular part of their annual senior games. We need to do something about that.

Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Bill Craig of Blue Ridge, Georgia sends this...

"Just thought I would send a photo of our court at our home in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We play year round.....even in the snow. We call that Polar Bocce!'

{The small photo to the right doesn't do the beautiful court justice, so I made it and a couple others the Photos of the Week - see below. Click the photo right to view larger pics.}

Ron Grassi, President of the Iowa City Bocce Club
( http://www.bocceiowacity-coralville.com ) writes...

"Is there anyone that has made a DVD or VHS that could send me a copy, on how to play the game of bocce? I would like to have DVD/VHS of Open, Volo, and Raffa, with permission to make copies for our club and also for the local libraries. Because I know that different areas play the game differently, I would really like to get copies from different areas of the country.

If anyone has DVD or VHS, I would appreciate having them contact me via email.:

{If anyone can help, email Ron at bocceiowacity@gmail.com }

Al Colby asks this question...

"Hi, Bocce Guy. I have a bocce court at home, the sidewalls are made of railroad ties. Unfortunately, they are dead. The balls hit the sidewalls and do not bounce at all, they just run along the side. Is there a way to fix this?"

{Can any reader help with this question? Please REPLY. I forwarded Allan's email to Bocce Bob Whitlow ( http://www.BocceUSA.com - West Frankfort, Illinois) who I know has dealt with this problem before, using a rubber like padding affixed to the side rails. I'll post any other solutions in the ezine.}

Mickey Hicks of Birmingham, Alabama sends this...

"Love your site.....it only makes me want to have a real bocce court in my home town of Birmingham, AL.

My mother's family came over from Sicily in the 20s and all the stories I hear were of them playing bocce where ever they could. My dad's family was from Brooklyn, NY and he said they had bocce courts everywhere. We have a large group of Italian-Americans in the area but not a single court to be found. Since we've never seen a real court or a real game played we're probably not really playing correctly either. Looks like I need to get your book.

Thanks for the Bocce Info!"

{I'm always fascinated by where questions and comments originate from...e.g. - Although I've had book orders from 50 states and 7 foreign countries, I don't get many from AL, AR, MS. This week I got an order from Turkey. Over the years I've received orders from Italy, Portugal, Great Britain, South Korea, Canada, and The Netherlands.}

Photos of the week
This week's photos are now part of The Joy of Bocce web site's Bocce Venues and are available for viewing permanently.

Bill Craig sent the great pics and the following details...

"The court was built two years ago next to our new home. We moved our jewelry business from Atlanta to the North Georgia Mountains in 2004. I was introduced to Bocce many years ago when I was in the restaurant business in Atlanta. Our restaurant had a small 35’ court on an outdoor patio and people lined up to play every night. Since then, I have always had a Bocce court at my home. The one in the photo is 60’ by 12’.

We used railroad crossties for the boards. The surface is hard packed Georgia red clay with a top dressing of crushed marble aggregate. The marble business is very big around here and the aggregate is a byproduct of that and was readily available. It looks like white sand but has cured to a slightly firm surface. We rake it between games.

We play with neighbors and friends almost every evening as we have installed lights for night play. We are building a deck and viewing area around the far end of court this summer. The deck will have an incredible view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. One of our neighbors (after learning the game from us) has also built a court just like ours at his home. I think we may have started something!

If you are ever in the area, look us up."

{Count on it! Next time I'm in the neighborhood I might just come knocking on your door.}
