Hello bocce friends,

Second notice: We've set the date for the Massachusetts Senior Games for bocce. All participants must be at least 50 years old by 12/31/07.

The date is Saturday, July 7, 2007 and more details will follow shortly. My non-profit group (Ken Waldie Senior Sports Circuit, Inc.) will be hosting the event at our venue in North Andover, MA.

If you have any "clout" in your state, try to get your Senior Games to include bocce, and also suggest that it be a national event (teams who medal in the various state games qualify to play in the National Senior Olympics the following year).

To date, bocce is not a national event in the Senior Olympics and only a few states offer it as a regular part of their annual senior games. We need to do something about that.

Bocce news & readers' feedback
{Publisher's comments in brackets...}

Richard & Barbara Heisler have an interesting logo (see image to the right) and I asked them to provide a little info...

"The name is written BOCCE iNK and if you can open the attachment you will see our logo and the concept behind it. If not, the 'O' in BOCCE is a red ball and the dot over the 'I' is a black inkdroplet I drew in MS Paint. The concept is that we are photojournalists and are concerned with getting the various bocce organizers and clubs some PR or 'ink' as they say in Hollywood. It has gone a long way toward making us welcome (not that everyone wasn't nice, anyway) at the various CA venues. And without the good 'ol JofB, none of this would be possible.

We are starting to check on the possibilties of moving closer to the California bocce scene (Bay Area and Delta), as the closest tournaments are six hours away and practice gets massively rained out up here. The average rainfall is 40" and last season (05-06) we got 60". This is a sort of paradise up here with massive redwoods (we have 100' trees on three sides of our house), but everything is always about ten years behind the curve. If I had the talent and ambition to start an indoor club, it would still be another ten years. Right now bocce is a family activity and not a sport on the Redwood Coast.

For Christmas, Barbara got me a set of Perfetta F2001 Series A balls that Playaboule ordered from Italy. I got her a set of 88mm rubber-filled volo balls by way of Benji Tosi. Barbara and I are hopelessly addicted to Raffa and Volo and we need competiton and practice to be even respectable. We can't just go down cold and have any result except last place."

{The Heislers are great supporters of the Joy of Bocce Weekly and bocce in general. If you are in need of BOCCE iNK's services, contact...

Bob Whitlow of West Frankfort, Illinois responded to last week’s query from Allan Colby about side rails without bounce…

“I know your dilemma, I had the same problem with our indoor courts here at the mall. Go to http://www.bocceusa.com and look at the picture of our side rails. I made these and they work well. I used liquid nails adhesive to fasten the black foam rubber to wooden one inch by four inch stock that I purchased at the local lumber yard. Then I screwed the wood/foam to my old existing side rails. The balls come off the side rails like a pool table.

I experimented with many thickness of foam before I decided on the proper one. Ours foam is 3/4 in thick, very durable but hard as there is not too much give that makes the rebound adequate.

This foam is used to line the inside of refrigeration units for sound, temp. insulation, etc. I accidentally stumbled onto it at our local recycling center. They had big rolls from 1/4 inch thick to the 3/4 inch that I purchased for a song.

Your best bet is to contact your local commercial refrigeration dealer who would have knowledge of what I am speaking about and go from there."

{After Bob emails the info above to Allan Colby along with an offer to send a sample of the material, Colby responds like any appreciative bocce enthusiast would...

"Thanks again. If you are ever in Northern California, come by, play some bocce and have a glass of wine!"}

Here's another great email from a subscriber...

Buon Giorno Mario,

I noticed in your latest ezine that you gave a talk in Amesbury. And you wrote, 'I love public speaking.'
Let me put you to the test. I am a member of the Bedford (NH) Italian Cultural Society. We meet on the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm in the Bedford Library. We are always on the lookout for new speakers on subjects of interest.

Several of our members play bocce recreationally. I am quite passionate about it and have built a bocce court in my back yard. One of our favorite summertime events is to gather there, playing, arguing, and then eating.

We have never had a speaker on the subject of bocce. I think it would be a very interesting evening. Would you be willing to talk at of our meeting sometime?

Grazie,
Riccardo Floreani

{Yes, Yes, Yes - we have set the date for Thursday, April 19th. Please come if you are in the neighborhood. Bedford, NH Library - 7:00 PM. Good things to consume afterwards courtesy of the Bedford Italian Cultural Society.

I tell people to get me while I'm cheap - all you have to do is feed me. After I'm on Oprah you might not be able to afford me!}

Our old friend Frank Knight who we met when we used to run a tourney for Chattanooga's Dr. Portera at the "most scenic court in the south" has info re: last week's comments from Birmingham, Alabama.

"Could you send me any contact info. on Mickey Hicks of Birmingham, AL? Your current e-zine had his sad comments about a big Italian-Am. community in Birmingham but no known bocce courts - can you imagine? They are in the Chattanooga neighborhood. We want to help. Thanks.

Sincerely,
Frank Knight (z1boccez2@hotmail.com)

{I guess I need a geography refresher. You don't usually think of one state being "in the neighborhood" of another - although here I am in northeastern Massachusetts right on the New Hampshire border. Ron Grassi, President of the Iowa City Bocce Club ( http://www.bocceiowacity-coralville.com ) sends this...

"I have taken pictures of building the courts at City Park in Iowa City, Iowa, along with pictures of our Iowa City Bocce Club members and non-members playing at the courts. My son took some of those pictures and
made a slideshow and uploaded them to YouTube."

Photos of the week
This week's photos are now part of The Joy of Bocce web site's Bocce Tidbits and are available for viewing permanently. {Are you seeing the pattern here? As of 2007 each week's photos get a permanent page on the web site.}

This week's pics show the evolution of our temporary, setup/breakdown courts that we place over carpet or Astroturf. We've gone from two by tens (they warped) to 6" by 6" by 8' timbers (they were too heavy for our seniors to lug) to the present heavy gauge vinyl fence posts. Says the Boccemon...

"Numerous inquiries have been made regarding inexpensive scoring devices… In response, Boccemon designed a t-shirt with Velcro strips and markers which allow for easy score display.
