Hello Bocce Faithful,

My non-profit group has been selected to host the bocce segment of the Massachusetts Senior Games. We're set for Saturday, July 7th and we will have more info in next week's Joy of Bocce Weekly.

The Mass. Senior Games organization has received dwindling support from its major sponsors and my group (Ken Waldie Senior Sports Circuit, Inc.) is also struggling financially. So, we're going "all out" to make this a win-win event for the players and the organizations involved.

We're planning on a great day of bocce with good food, beverages and, of course, gelato to top things off.

We're also planning a program booklet featuring sponsorship ads that will be reproduced on both the Joy of Bocce and KWSSC web sites as well as our two popular ezines (Senior Sports and Fitness and The Joy of Bocce Weekly). This ensures the potential exposure for any sponsor ad to well over 10,000 people.

Please consider sponsoring our event and forward this ezine to anyone you know who might be interested in sponsoring. The revenues will support the Mass. Senior Games and the Ken Waldie SSC. Again, more details next week. For now, mark your calendar.

Best regards,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

From Bocce Bob Whitlow...

WF CARE ASSOCIATION WINS OKC FUNDRAISER

"The deeper we got into the tournament the hotter the action got. On the All-American Hearing Court sponsored by Brandon Sawalich, Franklin-Williamson Human Services team won over Boneyard Boccie Ball Club of Benton creating a tie in points for the division.

Because Southern Illinois Bank had defeated Franklin-Williamson earlier, the Bankers won the right to compete in the championship match.

On the Advance Hearing Court sponsored by Steve Sawalich, bocce fans saw two pick-up teams battle for the right to advance to the finals. After seven frames, the West Frankfort Care Association and First Bank of West Frankfort found themselves tied with eight points each. In the final frame, the Care Association won on its last ball sending them to the finals against Jim Renik's Bankers.

After the coin flip deciding the court of play and the assignment of the referee, the battle for bragging rights of the 2007 OKC/ Bocce USA event was underway.

In the first frame, Care Association players Bob Ellis and Royce White jumped all over the bankers, scoring three points. Not to be outdone, teammates Frank Moschino and Mary James responded on the other end with two more. After four frames, The Care Association was up eight to zero. However, the Bankers never quit as Tom Borgra and Ordell Tripp rallied with point frames of two, two and one. With the score showing eight to five, Ellis and White scored the final and deciding point for the Care Association making them Champions of the 2007 OCK/Bocce USA J&S Professional Pharmacy sponsored event."

Tom Belluomini sends this...sung to the tune of Take Me Out To The Ball Game...

THE BOCCE PLAYER'S SONG

Take Me Out To The Bocce Courts,

Take me Out To The Park,

And Let’s Bring Some ‘Cheese’ and ‘Vino’ Too,

Hey! I Don’t Care If I Never Go Home.

So, Let’s Roll, Roll, Roll Our Bocce Balls

If I Don’t Win It’s A Shame.

For It’s One, Two, “Twelve Points I Win”

At The Bocce Courts…..

Tom Belluomini

Richard & Barbara Heisler of BOCCE iNK fame sent this...

"Vern and Sharon Cooper organized their first tournament at East Portal Park in Sacramento, CA and it ran like a well-oiled machine.

East Portal has four sand and oyster courts in a city park in an Italian area of the state capitol. Vern and Sharon organized the sixteen team tournament by dividing the teams into four divisions of four teams each. Division one played all games on court number one, division two on court two etc. This made the tournament run smoothly as all the teams stayed in their respective areas and as soon as one game was over, the next began.

We were treated to a lunch of Texas BBQ (restraint was necessary to stay awake for the remaining games).

The two top teams from each division went into the playoffs (quarter-finals) and the semis and finals ran off in good order.

We were especially gratified when we finished in the money for the first time with team SACDOT."

Eugene writes with a request and a question...

"Please send me the weekly ezine. And can you tell me what angel dust on the court is?"

{Look for the ezine on Mondays. Not sure what angel dust is - I hear of 'brick dust' - a fine coating of red brick-like powder that some use as a top dressing...usually one inch set down, wet and rolled one-quarter of an inch at a time. Any readers familiar with angel dust? Pease REPLY.}

Shelby Greene asks...

"We have two carpeted, curbed courts. We have a drag broom,it dosen't do the job of cleaning off pine needles and live oak leaves. We are being told that a low speed blower will ruin the carpet. What do you think?"

{Can any reader answer this question? Please REPLY.}

Photos of the week
This week's photos were submitted by Bill Jones from Chilliwack in BC, Canada.

He says,

"Here are three pictures of the set-up we have here in Chilliwack. As you can see, we have the carpet which is 60' X 12' (and we have got a second one this week). I have also sent you a picture of the rack we have for storing them on.

We have two outside courts, and we shall be playing on them from May onwards (just playing inside once a week).

We are all enjoying our Bocce, and hoping to get some more members, now that we have the two carpets."

{Wow! A great set-up for an indoor bocce area that has wood or tile flooring and no carpet. For more info on this set-up, email Bill directly at bj75@shaw.ca. }
