Hello again bocce friends,

Last chance for you to support my non-profit group's bid to host the bocce segment of the Massachusetts Senior Games (We're going to press next week). The Games are set for Saturday, July 7th and we're seeking sponsorships - details below.

The Mass. Senior Games organization has received dwindling support from its major sponsors and my group (Ken Waldie Senior Sports Circuit, Inc.) is also struggling financially. So, we're going "all out" to make this a win-win event for the players and the organizations involved.

We're planning on a great day of bocce with good food, beverages and, of course, gelato to top things off.

We're also planning a program booklet featuring sponsorship ads that will be reproduced on both the Joy of Bocce and KWSSC web sites as well as our two popular ezines (Senior Sports and Fitness and The Joy of Bocce Weekly). This ensures the potential exposure for any sponsor ad to well over 10,000 people.

Please consider sponsoring our event and forward this ezine to anyone you know who might be interested in sponsoring. The revenues will support the Mass. Senior Games and the Ken Waldie SSC.

Click for details: http://www.joyofbocce.com/filecabinet/Ezines/sponsor_form.jpg

Best regards,
Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Senior Olympics and Bocce

Sadly, bocce has yet to reach national status at the Senior Games. There just aren't enough states holding qualifiers in bocce.

{That's me in the photo with my doubles partner, Peter Picarillo. We're sporting our state champion medals. But we couldn't represent Massachusetts this summer in Louisville, KY since bocce's not yet a national sport.}

The idea is this: you medal in the Senior Games in your home state one year and qualify to participate in the nationals (Senior Olympics) the following. The age groupings are 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70+. Although, I think to help get bocce jump started the grouping should be age 50 and up.

In the last Senior Olympics my group's age 55-59 softball team qualified in 2004 and played in the nationals in Pittsburgh in 2005. (We took home a bronze medal against very stiff competition.)

The other events in Pittsburgh's Senior Olympics included everything from Archery to Volleyball. The program booklet listed badminton, basketball, bowling, cycling, golf, horseshoes, race walk, racquetball, road race, shuffleboard, softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track and field, and triathlon. No bocce.

No bocce, although more and more state senior games are including it. What a shame. Bocce at the Senior Olympics would go a long way toward promoting the open rules game to the masses. From there, some would discover international rules bocce and go on to that level.

If you have any clout in your state, please influence the "powers that be" to add bocce to its senior games program.

Just received this from Michigan...

"The Michigan Senior Olympics (MSO) 2007 Summer Games will include Bocce as a ribbon event this year.

The 2-person team event will take place at Palazzo di Bocce in Orion, MI on August 9th, 2007 and includes breakfast and lunch (spectators may register for meals only).

Registration deadline: July 6th, 2007. Contact MSO: 1-800-400-8161 or http://www.michiganseniorolympics.com."

We hosted the bocce segment of last summer's Massachusetts Senior Games and it was a resounding success. We played "doubles" and had twenty teams participating. The previous two summers the bocce was offered on the other end of the state and had to be cancelled due to the small number of entrants.

So, we are trying to Do It Up Big this time around, in an attempt to show other states that bocce is entering the mainstream. We're hosting the event (triples, this time around) on Saturday, July 7th on our four indoor Astroturf courts in North Andover, Massachusetts.

We're going to have plenty of good food and refreshments along with spirited competition. We're also planning a program booklet and are asking local businesses to sponsor. We're hoping the bocce community will jump on board and sponsor too. If you have a bocce or other product or service that you want promoted, we'll get your ad to at least 10,000 sets of eyeballs via our ezines and web sites.

Ron Grassi, President of the Iowa City Bocce Club sends illuminating news...

"I wanted to let you know that the bocce courts in Lower City Park in Iowa City, Iowa, are now lighted by two 1000 watt lights.

There are four 12' X 60' courts, with crushed oyster shell top dressing that the City of Iowa City built, and are maintained by the Iowa City Bocce Club.

The courts are used by the Iowa City Special Olympics, as well as league play by the ICBC, along with other bocce players from the area. League play is being held on both Wednesday and Thursday evenings, with 32 two-person teams participating. The participation in league
play has doubled from last year.

The club maintains a website, http://www.bocceiowacity-coralville.com, where people can see pictures of backyard courts, the courts being built in 2005 and 2006, as well as pictures of Special Olympians and bocce players using the courts.

We hope that some of your readers of the Joy of Bocce ezine will stop by.

Michael Grasser sends regrets that the Women's Pallino D'Oro has been cancelled. There just weren't enough women participants from around the country to make the event meaningful.

The Men's Pallino D'Oro will go on as scheduled.

Valerie DiBenedetto, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels (Fort Collins, CO) sends this...

"We held our 1st Annual 'Bocce for Meals' ICEBREAKER Tournament (but our 3rd Bocce for Meals Tournament as we have held two before in September) on Sunday, May 6, 2007.

We play 'Open' bocce. We had a great time and are looking forward to our 3rd annual 'Bocce for Meals' Tournament on Sept. 16th, 2007. We are hoping to get 32 teams. We had 24 on May 6th and raised just over $3,000 for our local Fort Collins Meals on Wheels program."

The Next Food Network Star

One of our bocce posse here in Methuen, Massachusetts is a contestant on The Next Food Network Star (one of eleven on the show - selected from 3000 applicants).

The show aired Sunday evening and two of the eleven were eliminated (not our boy, though). This week another contestant was eliminated and our guy is still in the kitchen. The eventual winner gets his own TV cooking show on the Food Network.

Tom is a great guy, a solid bocce player, and an excellent cook with the big personality that TV audiences love.

Click the link below to go to his MySpace page to learn more about him. If you like what you read, click on "Add To Friends" as this is like casting a vote for him. Tom's a fine, self-taught chef and a top-shelf human being. I recommend him to you without reservation.

{If you don't have a MySpace page, you will be asked to create one - it's simple and there is no charge. Please spread the word so that the bocce community might get behind one of our bocce brothers.}

Watch the Pallino

I enjoyed Stephanie Foerster's film very much, but didn't have the time this week to write a proper review. Look for it next issue, he said, hopefully...

About the Film...(from the web site)

"At the turn of the century, over 15 million immigrants left home for better lives in the US. Many were drawn to the promise of steady work in the coalmines of small rural towns like Toluca, Illinois. The Italian miners and their families gathered together on Sundays to play bocce, competing for a bottle of wine or wheel of cheese.

Today, Toluca maintains this convivial spirit by hosting what is arguably the largest bocce tournament of its kind in the country¡Xand probably one of the most raucous.
'Watch the Pallino' uncovers the history of a small town's passion for bocce, and follows key players and organizers over the course of the daylong tournament--all the way to the finals.

Father Neri, a bocce playing priest, the jocular Shirley and State champs Theresa and Nancy Biagini are all there to win. 'Watch the Pallino' showcases the historians, entertainers and avid bocce players who make the town what it is today."
