Bocce faithful,

I'm doing a talk on bocce on Monday, 3/19 at an Italian restaurant in Amesbury, Mass. I LOVE public speaking, and BOCCE is my favorite topic. Here are the details...please come if you are going to be "in the neighborhood."

On Monday evening (March 19th) I'll be speaking on Bocce at Wild Bites (Italian restaurant that brings in speakers monthly for Italian Night). If you'd like to attend, here are the details:

Wild Bites - 65A Market St., Amesbury, MA 01913
web site: http://www.wild-bites.com/

"ITALIAN NIGHT - scheduled once a month on a Monday evening, enjoy a delicious buffet, while learning about Italian food, culture, history, etc. Join us and share your passion for Italy!"

6:30 PM buffet (I hear the food is excellent) - $25 per person
7:30 PM speaker
7:50 PM questions & answers
8:00 PM adjourn

Hope to see you there - to make sure you don't get shut out (they'll be coming from all over the eastern seaboard for this high powered event) - call Tracey @ 978-337-7965 to reserve a seat.

Mario Pagnoni (The Bocce Guy)

Bocce news & readers' feedback
{Publisher's comments in brackets...}

Peter Rabito sends news...

{That's Pete in the photo getting congratulations from USBF President John Ross after winning the gold medal in the Raffa Shooting contest (US National Bocce Championships in St. Louis.)}

"I thought it would be a good idea to mention the new USBF Eastern Sector directorship positions:

January 1, 2007 issued in a restructure within the USBF Eastern Sector. As both sector directorships - President (Dr. Angel Cordano) and Vice President (Mike Lapcevich) terms expired, stewardship of the sector needed to be passed on.

Having previously held the position of Eastern Sector Regional Director, Dr. Cordano thought it would be a good idea if I now took on the responsibility of Eastern Sector President. I appreciated his confidence and graciously accepted.

Since all of the sector positions were now vacant, I thought I would nominate individuals who I feel continue to advance the cause of Bocce. I contacted Mario Pagnoni and extended an offer to serve as Eastern Sector Vice President. I was very happy that he accepted. We all know how dedicated Mario is to promoting Bocce!

Next was the position of Regional Director. I believe the Federation and sector will continue to benefit as the good Doctor accepted the position as well... The final position, that of Eastern Populous Member was extended to New York's John Samaritano. John, an American Bocce Club member, understands the importance of introducing this sport to all age groups as well as the importance of indoor Bocce facilities for family recreation as well as a means to develop higher caliber players.

The Populous Member position became available to the Eastern Sector this year due to the continued growth of USBF Eastern Sector memberships. This may be a good sign that our sport is slowly distancing itself from the perception that Bocce is played only by Italians and old men!

I have the utmost respect for these individuals and along with the continued support of USBF President John Ross and Vice-President Mike Grasser, together we will foster Bocce's growth, further the Federation's cause and witness the rise of this great sport of ours to a place of prominence - which it rightly deserves!"

Regards,
Peter Rabito
Eastern Sector President

{The "powers that be" have been after me to join the board but I have preferred to stay neutral, like Switzerland, in the bocce wars. But, it just makes sense for us to jump on board the United States Bocce Federation's bandwagon. After all, they are the governing body for bocce in America. My first suggestion is to add that line, "The Governing Body of Bocce in America" to all USBF letterhead and correspondence.

I'm looking forward to helping the sport and the USBF grow.}

Deborah Nolen writes...

"I would love to put a bocci alley in my back yard. I can't dig an alley into this clay dirt! I'm going to look in to finding some labor help. As to the layering of the egg shell, then the tennis clay...it's all overwhelming Wish there were SIMPLE instructions for the likes of me."

{It can be daunting, that's for sure. You don't need "egg shell - tennis clay, etc." Try Bryan Mero's site (Ibocce.com) - he has a simple booklet for putting a low budget court together. View it here: http://www.cafepress.com/ibocce.7736137 }

{There was a glitch in last week's ezine setup where a couple articles got intermingled inadvertently. So, I am running this piece again...as the kids say, "My Bad!"}

Here's news of an event that sounds like it's gonna be a good one! It's spearheaded by John Ratzenberger (Cliff of Cheers fame):

Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs Foundation
presents
John Ratzenberger's Bocce In The Orchard

"Come play bocce! John Ratzenberger, actor, author and co-founder of the non profit organization Nuts, Bolts and Thingamajigs Foundation welcomes you to step back in time, to a place reminiscent of old country Italy at John Ratzenberger's Bocce in the Orchard at Limoneira Orchards in Santa Paula, California on November 2nd, 2007. Be among the first to play on these 12 beautiful regulation-sized courts!

We invite you to come and play bocce within Limoneira Orchards' rich agricultural backdrop at what promises to be an adventure-packed Celebrity Bocce Tournament, Dinner Gala and Auction. Amid playing your favorite sport alongside your favorite celebrities, guests are also welcome to enjoy hot air balloon rides, horseback riding, carriage rides and jeep tours across endless acres of countryside.

On this autumn afternoon, hot air balloons color the sky and cast shadows on the orange, lemon and avocado trees that shade Limoneira's authentic regulation-sized bocce courts. This magnificent backdrop is the perfect setting to entertain friends and family while competing with and against celebrities, athletes and media personalities. Romantic Italian music completes the mood.

As the tournament concludes, wine and spirits will continue to flow beneath a canopy of stars and moonlight at our Dinner Gala and Auction, which will offer the finest Italian cuisine featuring renowned restaurateur Stefano 'Chef Steff' Tedeschi.

Stay an extra day - November 3, 2007 - and enjoy Tinkering Day, a day of innovation and invention for the entire family.

We hope you will join us for this unique and momentous event. All proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Clara Valley and The Education for Children with Diabetes Foundation."

{I like the sound of this one. Looks to be very professionally done. I'm talking with the organizers this week - more info to follow. Visit their excellent web site at http://www.bocceintheorchard.org . }

Here's an example of a Press Release sent in by Bocce Bob Whitlow:

BONEYARD WINS CHAMPIONSHIP

Leading by only fourteen points, Boneyard Boccie Ball Club of Benton turned on the afterburners and won all three games from McCord’s Market. The three wins boosted their lead to thirty-seven points and more than enough to win the 2006-2007 Winter League Championship at Bocce USA at Factory Stores of America Shopping Center in West Frankfort.

Stotlar Lumber Company finished a strong second in the standings with The Franklin-Williamson Foundation taking third. Top three teams will receive personalized plaques at the annual banquet held next Monday evening at the West Frankfort City Park Aquatic Center.

The battle of the evening was between J & S Professional Pharmacy and Severin’s All-Stars-n-Stitches. In a fierce three games, The pill pushers seem to do everything right with Severin’s trying to find the pollina.

J & S took two out of three games. Severin’s lost the second game 9-8 only to be out rolled in the finale 9-2. As the total points were added, the pill pushers whooped with joy as they read the scoreboard.

J & S took away fourth place from Severin’s by one point, 530 to 529.

The West Frankfort Lion’s Club won two out of three games from Greg Galli Auto Body but was not enough to overcome the body menders 33 point lead.

Final Standings 2006-2007

Boneyard Boccie Ball Club 646
Stotlar Lumber Company 619
Franklin-Williamson Foundation 561

Severin’s All-Stars and Stitches 529

Photos of the week
This week’s photos are now part of the Bocce Venues page at JoyofBocce.com (will be available permanently - not just for the week).

Submitted by Don Augustine, he tells us...

"Attached are pictures that I had taken at the Port Charlotte Beach Complex. We had a fund-raiser there for the Sons of Italy Lodge #2507 on January 27, 2007.

I didn't put any names of the players or titles to the pictures, mainly because I don't know all of the names of the players and rather than include some and exclude others, I didn't put in any.

We had 18 teams of 4 players on each team and a good time was had by all.

These 2 courts are clay and were built by the County for the public, and most of the people that play there groom the courts on a daily basis as they play every day, if it's not raining. The courts are about 12' x 60'.

We started a 9:00 in the morning and wrapped up around 6:00 in the evening. We had plenty of food and, as I said, a good time was had by all.

Everyone enjoyed it so much that they want to have another on in March."

{Many thanks to Don for the great pics - please follow his lead and let us see what bocce is like in your neck of the woods.}
